- College Football rankings are everywhere - but the JP Poll is different. On Josh Pate's College Football Show Ep 567 Josh Pate broke down the latest edition of his power ratings with big movement happening. USC continues to fall while Clemson is also moving back up. Will Steve Sarkisian and Texas stay atop the ratings or do we see Ohio State back on top even after a close loss to Oregon? How did things adjust with Alabama narrowly beating South Carolina and Tennessee getting taken to overtime vs Florida? Where does Miami get slotted? Does Kansas State continue to stay above Iowa State? UGA is also near the top ahead of a showdown in Austin. CLEMSON!!!!! LFG!!!!!!!
Go Tigers 🐅
The B1G championship game is in Indianapolis. Indianapolis is 176 miles from Columbus. It is 2,249 miles from Eugene. With all due respect, Josh, this will in no way, shape, or form be a ‘neutral site game’. It’ll be as much of a neutral site game as when Oregon played UGA in Atlanta. And you know this.
That’s if OSU even makes it
@LoganBrown-g5h it would be nuts if Penn State finally beat them this year.
Does Oregon not travel?
@@Sandbergo7 not the point. Oregon travels well.
But the point is that this is a neutral site game in name only.
@@Sandbergo7 not like Ohio St fans
Can we get a whole video on Ole Miss “injuries” I think it would be funny to hear your opinions on it.
Yea that’s some bs
It’s a disgrace to the sport
@@robertlincoln8338 I do remember now last year ole miss doing it a lot
As an Oregon fan I’m not even going to trip lol. Y’all do what you gotta do to get your views. We got business to take care of in Purdue 🤙🏽
Yeah, cause if Oregon was over Ohio state there’d be a massive viewership drop off 😂
That’s like saying me, a Texas fan, isn’t gonna watch after having OSU over us lmao
Oregon fan here, and I have NO problem with the model in regards to Oregon. Oregon didn't play as clean as it should have and needs to play better on the road at would essentially be a " home game " for Ohio State if they end up getting the rematch.
JP, I also saw a double digit dog go into an away game and beat them. After beating Alabama! Where is Vandy?
I saw that smile when you mentioned Florida at 24. Whoa!!!
Hypothetically what does BYU have to do to be top 25 in this? They just keep winning at what point does lack of supposed talent get trumped by results? And how does coaching play into this cause J Hill and Kalani have BYU very disciplined and organized.
As Josh said, this ranking is about neutral field favorability, not on-field results. They would have to get to a point where they'd be favorites against everyone but those above them on a neutral field.
Idk if lm crazy but hypothetically l would easily take BYU over Utah or Florida if they played in let’s say Texas. BYU is currently 6-0 against the spread they’ve proven that the oddsmakers don’t really understand what BYU has going for them.
I understand power rankings but to hate on the AP pole for preseason biases and then have 2 loss Ole Miss at 7 is laughable. Then to follow that up with “I don’t care what your record is” is crazy…like at some point the results on the field have to matter. Especially with two losses.
Josh, you said before that Blacksburg is top on your list of game days you haven’t been to yet. I’m telling you right now, 7-1 Clemson rolling into town to a 6-3 Hokies team fighting for the ACC would be so electric it would fuel Pate State for years to come. Consider this my personal invite🤝🚂
I actually agree with this. But with one exception. I would put My team (Georgia) below Oregon.. I would have it that way for one reason. I don't think Georgia is playing to their potential at all right now, and that's every game, not just one game or another. They've had flashes of Greatness, like Auburn, Clemson, and the second half of the Alabama game. But that's it in my opinion.
You having Miami, Ole Miss, and Bama that high is criminal and insane - Respectfully
Why is Miami here? They’ve had three bad quarters lol
As a Clemson fan I’m still skeptical moving forward. We’ve played really well against not so great teams. That UGA game is stuck in my mind.
As it should. BUT we struggled against bad teams last year so there is definitely improvement.
Same but if you watcged the game the defense needed the offense to play good but they didn't.(6 point half to 28 point half for georgia)
Also on offense we didnt play 2/3 of our top 3 relievers.
Also dabo didnt have film on geogia and dabo playes better with film.
But number 5 in a power ranking poll for clemson is still kinda crazy.
I like our chancss vs Miami if our D line can pressure Ward. I mean Cal kept it close. @nibbs3842
@@wrenwillow9430 Oh yeah, huge improvement. I believe we’ve improved since the UGA game as well. Confidence and momentum are huge.
I get what you mean but this team just looks different. We haven’t played this way against unranked teams since the Lawrence days so we’ll have to see how they preform against ranked opponents I guess. I wouldn’t use the Georgia game as a metric though that was the first game
God bless the JP poll
We love it don’t we folks?
Why? It's Dogshit
I'm a Penn State fan and I totally agree with the JP poll placement.
I agree with PSU at #9. 🤷♂
Retired Sports bettor and tOSU grad here. The power ranking seems reasonable, but in no way shape or form am I trusting fanduel employees for confirmation. I'm actually surprised and slightly skeptical to hear that fan duel employees have any sort of idea of how to form a line considering that they're the biggest dog shop on the planet and are not even close to a market maker (unless things have changed in recent history).
BYU beats SMU away. Beats K-State at home. But because they didn’t win in a traditional way it counts the game as a fluke. Let’s see how many more wins it takes to change minds
They BLEW OUT K-State
As a Duck fan I think you’re spot on with the placement and who is above them and that actually Texas is #1. I think Miami isn’t being punished enough for losing to VT and barely escaping Cal.
Keep feeding the BYU fire!!!!
The power ratings are high and have a bad case of RPI syndrome. Are Florida and Arkansas good or could it be Tennessee is over rated? Also having K State above a BYU team who made them look silly and is currently undefeated is just bananas
Interesting he talks about playing on a neutral field, yet BYU already beat SMU on their home field. SMU didn't even score a touchdown. His logic falls apart with little observation.
@@deyegeye Unless I am mistaken, this poll is about who would be favored to win against every other team. Just because a certain result happens, does not mean that that would be the outcome every time. For example, if Alabama and Vanderbilt played their game 9 more times, how many times do you think Vanderbilt still comes away with that win? I am not sure they could do it again even with 9 chances, which would mean I would think Alabama would be heavily favored against Vanderbilt, despite the opposite result having happened in reality.
I see the JP poll as forward-thinking, whereas the AP poll is based, in large part, on past results. They just measure two different things.
@@taxag1134 see that is totally reasonable, I wouldn't bet on Vandy to win that game again, even if they repeated the effort. However, I 100% would bet on BYU to make Kstate look silly again.
BYU is currently 6-0 against the spread l don’t think the odds makers quite have BYU figured out. I personally would take BYU over a bunch of teams in the top 25. But lm fine with the doubt an underdog mentality never hurt anyone.
I love this BYU team but the box score of that K State game tells a far different story then the scoreboard did. Two non offensive TDs and under 250 yards of offense is a multiple statistical deviation outlier of a blowout result. BYU was the better team that night but by far less a margin then most people perceive.
Right on, hokie-hokie hi! Thursday night baby!
The JP model is actually a useless model lol
It’s pretty good at what it does which is recreating what Vegas spreads would be. You can disagree with it all you want but like I’m pretty sure that the rankings are pretty spot on if I were to imagine in my head what teams would be favored over who
@@christopherjoniak9120if it just recreates what Vegas spreads would be that makes it useless. Vegas does a terrible job of determining college football lines.
@AyeItsTaee it tries to predict who would win. Vegas spreads are designed to both do that AND entice people to bet money.
That's who I love it. It's so far off and this guy is so confident in its inaccuracies.
I don’t blame anyone for struggling to believe that BYU is the #13 team in the country like the AP says. I fully understand the power rating concept and who would be favored on a neutral field, BUT at what point do you acknowledge that the oddsmakers and computer models may be wrong about BYU?
The Cougars are 6-0 against Vegas this year and it hasn’t been close. Two of those wins are against teams in the JP poll top 20 (1 home, 1 away). I doubt the Cougars can keep this up all year, but I sure wouldn’t bet against them despite what the conventional wisdom thinks.
I feel like at this point Boise state should be a lot higher.... Just considering how high Oregon is. Think 19 or 20 would make me happier.
If y'all are looking for the best power ratings, It's Collin Wilson at Action network. Texas should be laying 5.5 this weekend, and Texas would be -8.5 hosting Bama.
I’d really like to see Nebraska on there after a Saturday W!! GBR!!
So... The model projects who will win on a neutral field?
Is that the definition of a power rating?
If so, what is a ranking? If a ranking is based on what you've done, why is Texas ranked? Who have they beat?
Rankings seem like name recognition only.
Standings seems like the only valuable list.
Florida fan here, the defense is improved, but I could still see us losing to Kentucky this week. And 24 in the JP poll is still small potatoes compared to our competition after Kentucky (besides FSU)
FSU is still gonna beat yall even though we are hot steamy shit keep it noted
Really, Clemson?
FL getting bumped for close loss to TN. South Carolina fan here.. we have the biggest "almost" resume in football. Did beat LSU and fumbled away @bama.
Penn state is having fun this year. Love to see it

Clemson will roll Miami. Seen this hype train before
Texas A&M is a top five team along with Texas, Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State. I don’t need to wait to see every game to know this. Y’all will catch up soon enough.
😂😂😂 you little aggys are funny.
THIS is why aggy jokes write themselves 😂
I have officially witnessed the worst top 25 college football ranking
Ole Miss missed their vegas expectations by 6 points, does only your model matter even though it’s based on vegas numbers?
I hear ya on “power” rankings. But the fact is Oregon was a -3.5 point dog at home and out played Ohio State. So being a tighter line at -2.5 on a neutral field means anything now?
Yes it means something. There was a 35 percent chance for Oregon to win and they won. It’s not unheard of
Virginia Tech has to win the ACC to make the playoff. Could happen, but I don’t think they upset Clemson and pull an upset against Clemson or Miami in the ACC Championship
The one time Clemson played a decent team they got boat raced. Doesn’t make sense other than JP is playing favorites.
If close losses like Florida would shoot them up the rankings, where is South Carolina? “Lost” to LSU by 3 and Alabama on the road by 2. One bad loss on the resume.
You lost* no quotes

yup, apparently :/
If you’ve watched him over the past couple years, most of the time, not always, but most of the time, he’s biased against ND. Careful what you say though guys, he keeps receipts. 🙄 🙄
The ND overrated argument doesn’t hold up with his poll. If you move ND back to say 16th (arbitrary number) that means you would have to move A&M back to about 20th and Louisville couldn’t even be ranked. I also find it funny that ND is considered overrated by him but they beat 2 teams currently in his top 25.

Just my thoughts but we've seen what he can do. I think he needs to toughen up and settle down. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Oregon fair-weather fan here. I don’t disagree with OSU still being above OU. OU has a little work to do before I think they could win on a neutral field.
~ Oregon should of won by double digits and Ohio State was gifted the first TD of the game on a clear Interception... Oregon left at least 10 points off the board.
Yeah they need to work on getting the refs to pay attention and not flag people who aren't on the field, say the wrong number and the number they meant didn't commit a penalty.
@@NIKE-Duck Ohio State should of won by triple digits. Cuz I said so.
You spend a lot of time getting out in front of the inevitable confusion that arises from power ratings, but you focus on the wrong words. Here is the way I would phrase things at the top of these segments:
“Time for the JP Poll. Reminder: This is not actually a poll. It’s called the JP Poll because that’s a cute play on the name of the AP Poll, but they are so different that naming them in this way is kind of silly and we probably shouldn’t have done it. But I digress. The AP Poll is an aggregate ranking created by asking a bunch of people what they THINK about how college football teams should be ranked. The JP Poll is not a poll at all. It’s a MODEL. It’s a system that looks at all the data and statistics available and predicts the most likely result of neutral-field matchups between teams, and then ranks them accordingly. The AP Poll is purely opinion. Did you hear that part? 100%. Opinion. The JP poll is purely data-cold, hard, emotionless predictions-and then I sit here and layer my opinion on top as I tell you about it, which you may or may not appreciate, and which I’m sure you’ll shout at me about in the comments below and on twitter before I’m done with this sentence.”
Okay, after watching the rest of the segment I have to add one more thing. At 6:59 you say “…because that’s how POWER RATINGS work, as opposed to RANKINGS.”
You are clearly a smart guy, so either you’re uncharacteristically confused about the definitions of these words, or you do this on purpose just to make people like me take time to write comments, in which case, kudos.
Anyway, look. The JP Poll is absolutely a RANKING. It’s just that it’s a RANKING based on POWER RATINGS, as opposed to the AP Poll, which is a RANKING based on OPINIONS. They’re both rankings! They both place teams in an order based on some system of valuation. Every time you say “ratings vs. rankings” you increase confusion because you’re trying to redefine words that already have well-understood meanings.
tl;dr: “power ratings vs. opinion polls” or “models vs. opinions”, not “ratings vs. rankings”
Vandy is 41?!?! Is that because they lost to GA State? Because if that’s the case, then Alabama needs to be way lower on the list.
This isn’t a ranking so that doesn’t help as much.
Yeah that logic doesn’t work…
Even as a power rating, South Carolina resume is way stronger than Florida. Gamecocks easily could be 5-1 with one dud game against Ole Miss and maybe the best D-line in the SEC. Cocks should be over Florida.
Is the JP poll useless? Cause the “neutral field” argument is not even in reality. Even when the field gets set it’s useless…model must make deep respect for number of 5 star recruits. It’s an argument case…creates controversy…it’s Santa…the Claustrum
Where is Vandy!!!!! Lol
Clemson??? Georgia? And Miami????!
I don’t care what Clemson’s record is, they have played only one good this year and got blown out. The rest of their schedule is weak.
Always hating on ND😂
So Clemson is two ratings behind Georgia yet they’ve played in a “neutral site” and Georgia blew them out. That’s the only one that makes no sense to me
Wait teams can improve/change 😮
@@nibbs3842 but that drastically is my point. I understand Clemson has looked better and UGA has looked worse but on a neutral field again I’d have Georgia favored by 2 scores still
@@realleppy1299having them favored makes sense but two scores is crazy. I think that could happen but it’s way more likely to be within a touchdown

Call me a casual but how is LSU so low? And Ole Miss this high? Thats the only one I dont get can someone explain?
Ole Miss was favored at LSU in a game that went to OT. They would most certainly be favored vs LSU on a neutral field if they played again this week. Simple as that. - JP

They’re a completely different team now
Oregon had the same thing happen to them when they played UGA and then they became a playoff contender later that year

Clemsons offense clicked after that game. Not during it. Something snapped after that loss, and Clubnik went crazy. It reminds me of the time LSU lost to UCF, and then Joe burrow went insane and won the natty and hiesman.

Not too sure how tosu a 3.5 point favorite at autzen on the road but a 2.5 point favorite in a “neutral site” Indy?
Make the algorithm make sense please
Oregon played early season games with a limited offensive playbook and a base defense. The odds makers didn’t see the whole picture until the OSU game.
Having seen it play out, the Duck offensive execution wasn’t great and the game could have gone either way. I have no problem with OSU being the favorite on a neutral field.
Half the season left to see if the Oregon offense executes better with a more open playbook.
Because they just played the difference was a field goal, and how many times are surprise onside kicks gonna work? Or how many times is will howard gonna slide down with no time… we’re favored because the only reason you beat us was home field and when yall come to Indy and it’s all red your gonna know what I mean
@@jakobhazeltine2688 wait for the rest of the surprises!
@jakobhazeltine2688 ~ Oregon should of won by double digits.... Ohio State was gifted the first TD of the game on a clear Interception. Oregon missed an easy field goal and an extra point and two point conversion and had a receiver wide open inside the 2 yard line on a 4th down. Think about that.

Literally why would Ohio st be a favorite? Because the refs taking off interceptions is a 4pt swing? Because they're going to bench Denzel Burke lol? Oregon didn't have Burch or Holden and still stomped on the favorite. Keep coddling the soft baby buckeyes. The Big ten is Oregon's now
Penn st beats Clemson, Miami, and Ole Miss at home, away, and on a neutral site.

With respect, I completely disagree with your assessment about Iowa State were averaging 31/11 points a game and we can’t even get in your top 10? Come on man!
Which teams above you would you be favored against?
@@JoshPateCFB😂😂😂😂
Iowa St barely beat Iowa and won’t see another good team until Nov 30 with K state. Are they a top ten team maybe or they might be in the same boat as Mizzou
@@JoshPateCFB Personally I think Iowa State could beat Miami (no quality opponents played) Clemson would be tough, but they let NCSU score 35 on them. Ole Miss lost to LSU and Kentucky. Alabama has been playing garbage football the last two weeks so if Iowa State had them in the last two weeks, I would put Iowa State in the W. Penn State has a win against West Virginia, but so do we and they barely beat USC who is a three loss team. Notre Dame if they play like they did versus NIU plus the only other quality win they have was against Louisville who lost the SMU. Ohio State best opponent they played was Oregon and they lost to them in overtime and they beat Iowa but so did Iowa State. Georgia lost to Alabama and not to throw salt in the wound but Alabama lost a Vanderbilt. And their next best quality opponent was Clemson, which is good for them because Clemson keeps winning. And Oregon their best win was against Ohio State, but I was barely just like how they barely snuck past Boise state. The best team I hate to say it was probably Texas who beat Oklahoma and Michigan as quality opponents but Michigan lost to Washington and Oklahoma struggled against Houston who is near the bottom of the big 12 ranking.
I probably would have it: 1Texas, 2Ohio State, 3Oregon, 4Clemson, 5Georgia, 6Alabama, 7Iowa State, 8Miami, 9Penn State, 10Notre Dame
I'm totally miffed at why Miami is continually in the top 10 discussion! How can they be measured or compared when they do not play a single top 25 team the entire schedule until they reach the playoff based merely on winning against inferior teams and barely in the last two weeks? Of course, Miami fans will try to rationalize until the time comes when they face a true opponent. There are plenty of teams based on strength of schedule that deserve more merit here.
It's a power ranking not a resume ranking. You have ears use them
@@cory2023 Exactly where is the power? I can hear a gnat fart so it's not my hearing. It doesn't matter what ranking/rating list you view, overinflated Miami is on it.
It's not Miami's fault that Florida St was in the top 10 then stank it up. Or Georgia tech that was ranked lost or Louisville that was ranked lost or Virginia tech ranked lost. The ACC is just killing each other off at this point like the SEC. You don't have to play against a ranked team to be a threat. Vandy vs Bama or Kentucky vs ole Miss ring any bells for you. Only difference they lost. I'm a Miami fan truly but you got to see rankings didn't mean Jack.

Your such a clueless college football fan. Open your ears and listen to how a power ranking works. It's not a resume ranking.
You dont get it… its not a ranking. Its just a look at talent and potential.
It’s because it’s hard to understand the difference between a ranking vs rating system. Rankings are based on your schedule and wins and losses. Ratings are based on how good the algorithm thinks you are based on stats. That’s why Ohio State is higher than Oregon even though Oregon just beat them. The stats still show Ohio State should win that game. Pretty much the better team doesn’t always win.
