Someone claimed that Daryl was more entertaining than Johnny Carson. I must say, I'm not seeing it.
It might be Aussie vs Yank sense of humor.
Carson's genius was that he brought out the best in his guests and never had a problem with taking his success seriously. He was the perfect host for a nightly talk/humor show.
I posted a show with Bob Hope, Dean Martin & George Gobel of the Tonight Show.
    30 years with top ratings.
It sounds like Somers was just on Saturday nights, is that correct?

Not "someone claimed" - EVERYONE who knows Daryl knows he's more entertaining than Carson. He's just as quick, just as funny, and just as engaging. Not taking anything away from Carson, but his legend has grown simply because he's an American talk show host, and it SEEMS to be more legit when you're known in America, whereas Daryl was only known Australia-wide, which doesn't in any way detract from his inherent largesse when comparing him to Carson.
It's not even a case of Aussie vs Yank humor. Daryl is just better. Period. I spent the first half of my 50 years in Australia, the second half in the States, so I've seen both in their prime, and within the cultures they presided over. And Daryl is better.
When he interviewed the big American stars that popped into his shows occasionally (Clint, Stallone, etc.), he would adopt such a professional interviewing manner, with interesting, probing questions and displays of empathy, that one could easily see him hosting a talk show akin to Johnny's (in essence, Daryl would become the straight man, while his crew around him would be the larrikins, and keep the show chaotic around the interview - it was a sight to behiold!).
You don't have to acknowledge it, murphicus. It's true whether you see it or not.
Carson may be legendary for his contribution to talk show history, but Daryl is Legend for the spectrum of entertainment he brought via his TV shows.
