  • All things NDS! The first of many videos on the National Design Specification for Wood Construction. In this video I discuss the basics of wood design, the three most important codes that make up the NDS, and why I use them everyday as a professional engineer. Enjoy!

Last August I passed the PE exam. This video is still tabbed in my browser Favorites. I watched it at the start of my wood design prep for the PE Civil: Structural exam, and then in the final days leading up to it. Along with some others from your channel. It was immensely helpful. You helped me pass the exam and earn my license with this. Something for years I was doubtful would be possible for me. So, I came here to say Thank You. You made a difference.

Thanks for your video. But @ 9:41 you said CD is determined based on the largest load applied to member, but NDS 2.3.2 says CD for the shortest duration load shall apply for that load combination. Please correct me.

This video and the others on wood frame construction are great. I am drafting house plans for a wood frame construction 14x24 1.5 story in Fl 130 W Exposure C. Sheathing for floor /walls /roof 1x8 pt pine boards on the diagonal. I am planning for the house to sit on 2x12 pt pine beams/girder attached to concrete piers. I am using the WFCM, SDPWS and NDS. I want to use 2x10 pt pine for floor framing/diaphragm. How do I calculate how many 2x10 plys for rim joist? Using NDS?

Also most of the interior finish will be 1x pine boards horizontal. I believe I can use L/180 for deflection? Rather than 360?

Where is the "Commentary"? I see references for the National Design Specification for Wood Construction with Commentary in the NCEES exam spec, but I don't see any commentary. Is this the 2015 Manual for Engineered Wood Construction?

the commentary is the second half of the book!

Just to be clear, I'm looking at the PDFs of these. The "NDS" 2015 has chapters 1-16, plus Appendix A-N, and then a references section (no mention of a commentary). The Supplements have sections 1-4 (no mention of a commentary). Then there is the SDPWS 2015 with sections 1-4, Appendix A, References, and then an actual commentary section listed. Then there is the 2015 AWC "Manual for engineered wood construction" with sections M1-M16. (Not listed as part of the exam design standards)
When the exam specification says "National Design Specification for wood Construction with Commentary" what do they mean? Because the PDFs do not have any sort of listed "commentary" section.

So it seems there are PDF versions with and without commentary. With that being said, is there significant value in having the commentary when preparing for the PE exam, from the point of view of someone who does not do timber design at a professional level.

When you get older and maybe live around the old big cities, you'll see how much influence the unions have on how things get built; they line the politicians coffers and get the specs for their products. I live outside Chicago half my life and told this to my professor at U of Colorado at Denver, he was from China and didn't realize a lot of this thing.

I have never done wood design and know nothing about it. Now I want to take PE exam and wonder if it’s worth spending some 15 to 20 hours on a textbook and learning the basics or just skip it.
