My cousin’s storage locker had daily letters my grandparents typed to each other prior to them even meeting. Three years worth. It’s fascinating to hear them as young people…they were witty story tellers. I only knew them as old and sickly. But in 1916 they were a hoot.

I have now started to declutter unfortunately because I have to. My husband has metastatic cancer and we moved from a 3000 sq ft house to a 70 ft trailer. Now i am still decluttering in the trailer since i now have a hospital bed and other medical equipment (the bed is actually arriving this week) so I spent the last few days getting rid of stuff I realize I don't need. And yes, I don't want the family to have to do this later on. I gave away probably hundreds of dollars of crafting materials to people who would use it. In fact one woman who runs a daycare was overjoyed. And yes lots of glue and glue sticks! Thanks for these tips.

My husband and I were together for 21 years before his passing 2 years ago. We would "redecorate" for each season and each major holiday. It would take us about two days each time. I first started to declutter after his death by not decorating for every major holiday (only for Christmas now). My BIG goal this year is to go through every container of seasonal décor items and keep and put out only those items that can stay out all year around, that mean something to me, and don't clutter up my space! I know we had sooooo many "just because" items (just because it was the right color, just because we had an empty shelf, etc). They are on their way out.

    • @raquel5401
      @raquel5401 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I did this too. Now I only decorate for Christmas, and I only do a Christmas tree and fresh greenery. It's simpler and it's really warm and inviting, plus I can compost all of it when the season is over.

When my husband passed 2 years ago I couldn’t get myself to put up a tree for Christmas since it was his favorite holiday. The last year he was so ill I kept my tree up till February so he could enjoy it. I only took out my holy family figurines. My kids had taken all his sports ornaments. Last Christmas I gave my granddaughter all my ornaments for her first Christmas tree in her new house.

Very interesting & inspiring. I'm 73 & working on clearing for a while. I find I have hesitation about "just tossing it" since I don't want to add to landfills.
Am negotiating with 2 historical houses in LA area to accept antique quilts, doilies, etc, made by my gran & great gran. My relatives don't want these. I've also donated craft items to Boys & Girls Clubs, household items for govt-assisted Afghan families, & local charities. Also returned "borrowed" stuff I'd kept too long. It's a process for sure.

Since he moved out as a young adult, I've double downed on my own items and have more peace with less items.

Thanks for information. I would add:
    - Kitchen Utensils. We discovered we had three or four duplicates and some didn't even work.
    - Stuff from college - whether it's old textbooks that I will never look at again, or papers you wrote and think someone would be interested in. I discovered an entire box of photocopied articles from research books on leadership when I did my master's. I hadn't opened the box in 25 years.
    - Photographs. I know some people would never let these go, but we have travelled a lot and are old so used cameras with prints we developed. We also have a ton of photos on thumb drives. I went through them and if I couldn't immediately recognize where the view was, I threw it out. For family photos - I always took a lot of pictures of my four nephews when they were little - I packaged up a little gift box for each grown man now, and they were really pleased to get them.
    - Suitcases. I swear they were breeding in the back of the storage cell. If something was ripped, banged up or just unwieldy I let them go - whether to a landfill or in some rare cases to a charity shop.
    - Potpourri. I threw it all out.
    - Scented soaps. I am 66 and have received hundreds of soap as gifts. I redistributed it all.

This is such a timely video. Our mother died 8 years ago. The family house had over 60 years of living and collecting. It was neat and clean, but the closets, large book shelves, shelves of nick nacks etc. dresser drawers, attic areas, basement etc were full. My sister, myself and a friend spent July and August clearing out the house we grew up in. Two large dumpsters full, countless trips to Good Will and two moving vans to the auction.
It was truly an emotionally devastating experience. I vowed I would never live like that or have someone have to go through my stuff. I got the Marie Kondo book which really helped my thinking. You never know how many clothes you have until you empty every closet and dresser drawer and dump it all in one place. Right? How much do you really wear?
Thank you for this much needed reminder that I need to re-boot!

Please do a video on things to stop buying/bringing into one's home from craft shows, art festivals and church bazarrs and the like. Candles (use what you have first), jewelry (most of us prolly don't wear most of what we have), fancy/decorative soaps, cookbooks, small advertising items such as key chains, drink coozies, magnets, tote bags, insulated containers, we all by now have all of these items and don't need extras cluttering up our cupboards and drawers.

Just bought our downsizing house last week at age 52 and I'm so excited about having less stuff to maintain. We will still need to review what we have as we unpack, as there is much less room (double to single garage, 2 story + walkout to a 1080 sq ft bungalow). Using a term I shared with a friend - I am curating my memories i.e. selecting representative items - I can take also a photo instead of keeping the object (reminding myself that the objects are not the memories - the memories are the experiences with the person you love 😉)

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. We have a huge house, four bedrooms, and we built it almost 20 years ago, and, boy, did we fill it up. Lots of shelves with storage bins in the basement and attic, for starters. Don't get me started on the amount of "stuff" we both have that we brought with two previous marriages and lifestyles. Not to mention six kids between us. For one thing, I love Christmas and other holidays and have so many bins where I don't put out everything each year. I'm late to the party but am still in excellent condition and healthy at age 75, but now I'm starting to panic a bit. We've had some remodeling done, but now I need new kitchen counters and some new cabinets, and I'm finding that I had my cabinets organized all wrong, added to the face I do not need the new Fiesta dinnerware color every year. Gone are the days we had many kids, their spouses, grandchildren and a few friends in for each holiday dinner and during the summer. Grandkids even grown and people going separate ways most holidays, sharing with other parts of their family. I'm thinking of beginning with the kitchen cabinets and pantry, then moving to the bins of decorations in the garage. At my age, I have no idea when my body says, "Hey! I forgot how old I am, time to sit down and stop moving!" On the melanin thing you cited, not true at all. I'm not albino but I have the lightest skin shade available in make-up. I've shunned the sun. I had never smoked with or very rarely had a glass of wine or any other drink. That, and a blessing of high skin collagen in my DNA (my mother and one daughter were all blessed with it too) I never had a wrinkle and never used even minor face cream until age 50. When I was 52 and my husband took me to meet his parents his mother's response to him was, "You are robbing the cradle!" I had to show his siblings and niece my ID because they never believed me either. It was amusing for a while but I had to save my husband's honor. 😂 It's not lack of melanin that creates wrinkles but other factors such as sun damage and good old plain heredity. It's the collagen, not the pigment, that was told to me by my dermatologist. So, it's not you, it's them. The past two years I suddenly developed wrinkles I never had in places on my face. At first, I was depressed and horrified, then I decided that, at my age, I just need to let it go because I slid for so many years. It was just a shock, but should have been expected. I'm so blessed to have reached 3/4 of a century in excellent health so I'm not complaining. And, I love your videos, I'm learning a lot about gathering and giving. Bless you. ❤

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to getting rid of things that collect. My case…… one of the things….. a couch. A darling white couch that sat pretty in my dining room with toss pillows on it. No one sat on it. Like, never. But my two girls (cats) would lounge for endless hours. They, by the way, are black. Every time company came over there would be a deep sigh because I had to defuzz the couch. Cleaning day…. Sigh….. not done until the couch has been defuzzed. (My word). FINALLY it hit me. GET RID OF THE DERN THING. There was the battle inside of me. It’s so cute!!! It’s practically brand new. IT COST SO MUCH MONEY!!! But the peace of giving it to a cute young couple who needed it and having more open space to move around in and eliminating one more thing the spend my time taking care of is so worth it.

Absolutely ! If I could do a do-over, I sure wouldn't buy most of the exercise equipment I bought ! Funny you should mention a juicer. We had one to juice celery (a doctor wanted my husband to drink celery juice). He did for months. It didn't help. After that, the juicer sat, unused for years. Finally, we got rid of it.
I collected cookbooks for years. Recently, I got rid of 50 & I'm sure more can go. I nearly cleared a couple bookshelves of other books, too. Realistically, were we going to read or re-read those books? No. Let 'em go.
I have set aside 7 pairs of shoes & 3 pairs of slippers to donate. They've seen their better days. I donated 3 dresses I loved. They didn't look good on me any more....so out they went. My husband had about a doz. old pairs of jeans he never wore. Why ?? Out they went.
I find that a lot of things become just part of the scenery & we don't think about them until one day. Finally, one day we stop & think about them & wonder why we've kept this or that.
We had a huge box of Christmas decorations & holiday glassware. We weren't using any of it ! Out it went. Haven't missed it a bit.
I had kept years & years of calendars because the art work was so pretty or cute....but had I ever done anything w/them? No. They had sat in a box. Craziness. I recycled them.
There is a charity that helps locals who are victims of water damage or fire. They accept any donations that will help those people establish a home again. We have given them sheets, dinner plates we never used, kitchen utensils, pillows, some cookware we weren't using, extra blankets we weren't using, etc.
I haven't missed anything we've gotten rid of. We've filled our car many times to drop off donations. We pitched so much stuff. It feels wonderful.

Shoes and uncomfortable clothing (especially undergarments)! I liked how you talked through the shame we put ourselves through by tossing something we spent money on and not using. It's not becoming more valuable taking up space in your home. VERY helpful advice.

I love the room that you are in. My favorite color is black and that setting really speaks to me and is so peaceful. I love how it really brings out the painting on the wall as well. Thanks for making your encouraging videos. I am in my 60’s . My Mom passed several years ago and it is now time to go thru her stuff and ours as well. I have already started with our bedroom and it is so refreshing to have clear table tops.

Please, please do not throw expired medications in the trash!! Most police departments and pharmacies will take them and destroy them. You don't want these things leaching into the ground or water systems. Other than that, this was very informative.

Very good way to begin 2023. I spent most of the pandemic learning to downsize and declutter. I'm getting there but I had 8 kids, I homeschooled, and I have a home library of 10,000+ books. We had lots of stuff coz "We might need that someday." And lots of times we did. But as empty nesters we need to move on. I discard/donate/list on eBay 10 books a week and 10 house items per week. Slow but steady. Thanks for the time you spend on your videos. Wish I lived closer so I could hang out with you. 😘🤗

Wow you must have some stories homeschooling 8 kiddos! I homeschooled all of mine at varying points throughout their education. You definitely do collect a lot of books when you do that! I decluttered that stuff before I started this channel, otherwise I would make a video about it. Sounds like you have a good system in motion!!! It would be cool to hang out! If you're ever coming to Montana.... 😊

We homeschooled six who are all launched now. I’m finding I’m going through everything. Looking at it with a different eye. One child who is grown, and on her own introduced me to minimalism, and while I will never be a Stark owner of nothing, I’m learning to let go things that others could use better than I. The after homeschooling years are interesting because what does one do with 30 year old curriculum? the answer is you see whether your children could use it, or you sell it, or you donate it. Since you’re not going to use it anymore, it might do someone else good.

One thing I have learned through my minimalist journey, stuff really does affect your energy. Getting rid of “aspirational” things of supplements, crafts, exercise, whatever it was, that I had thought I would use someday, clearing that out helped me focus on today. We aren’t promised tomorrow anyway. I focused on what serves me today. I let go of stuff that someone said I “should” do. It’s very freeing.
One thing I’ve heard from a lot of people, they have every art piece their kid created in storage somewhere. Or their grandma, whom ever. But they aren’t enjoying it now. Why not take a nice photo of each item, keep a digital scrapbook, or there are great services like Mpix you can upload photos, and they will print a nice hard bound book at minimal cost. At least you can see the items in the pic and they are preserved. Make additional copies of the book at the same time and give to the child that made the art. Then let all that individual stuff go. For Medications, be careful how they are disposed of. I know here in CA, a couple days a year, there are collection sites and police stations that will dispose of medication for the community properly.

This was so helpful!! Things that I just didn't think about because they are just there. I think a big help to decluttering is retiring! I retired @ 55 a few years ago and after a year of crafting, sewing and doing things I hadnt been able to do for a long while, I am now to the point of feeling like there is too much stuff in my house. These are great helpful videos and I hope you continue them.
One thing I have found with sentimental items that I really dont want but do enjoy them for the memories, is to take a photo of the item. This way I can look back and remember it in the future without having to own it! So far this has worked well and I have not yet regretted getting rid of anything. 😊

Love your video. I need to get my husband on board for cleaning out the garage, barn, closets, etc. He's very sentimental and anything that was his mom's he cannot bring himself to part with. Otherwise he wants to give to somebody else who probably doesn't want it. I'd like to just let things go or try to sell them on Marketplace. Then they can go to my friend's church yard sale every September. We're in our early seventies and we need to do this now. We cannot let this burden for our children, as you say.

  • @bethstratton3391
    @bethstratton3391 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Good tips. They are all obvious things that are easy let-go items. Often we don’t get rid of stuff like this because we become clutter-blind to it and the stuff almost becomes background wallpaper that has ‘always been there’ and so we don’t question why or bother to do anything with it. Also we can become lazy and think I’ll get rid of that later, but often that time for getting rid never arrives. Plus, we often waste our time moving around stuff we don’t want that we’ve kept because, like you said it cost us money, forgetting that ‘wasted time’ equates to a loss of money too.

Did you know that if you were a teacher and you retired, bringing home the huge stash of pens you bought with your own money, (they were on sale) for your classroom- by the time you get to use them, many will have dried up over time? Ask me how I know. It doesn't pay to hoard things like pens.
