I put mini-split units in my garages. They will cool the garage down to 63° if I would ever be so crazy, or heat it to 80° in the winter. Best feature is the “dry” feature. Pull the car in during a rain and click on dry and the car will be nice and dry, and so will the floor. Definitely recommend looking in to a mini split for your home.
A lady I work with bought one of these for her retired brother's RV. It was nice to hear a 2nd positive opinion on these and see the coller and all accessories demonstrated on this video 👍 Always something new on your channel ☺️
I like the mini split idea especially if you use the garage a lot. 6 hours seems too long to cool the garage and still not get down to 80. I recently researched AC units and found mini splits were the best option then window units then portable units. Thank you for your videos!
It’s always nice to see a well organized garage. A lot of hobbies and that’s great. So much to teach your grandchildren. They will have such fond memories.
Mr Jerry thanks for the tip! It's getting hot out here in Cali with temps above 110. My only advice due to young eyes watching you work in the garage shop is to possibly wear some eye protection when using the power saw so youngsters learn the right way.
Wow Jerry, when you finish all these suggestions you won’t have money left to buy the wood but you can sell your tools and sit in that cool garage and read those books at Lowe’s about woodworking they have pictures so you can see what you could have made if you had lumber.
I used to do the same thing with a smaller unit. What I ended up doing was putting a small fan on a stand next to it and blowing the cold air in the direction I was working. It didn’t cool down the whole area but kept me cool while I was working. Great looking shop Jerry and I hope you get to use it more.
@@JERRYANDLINDA Maybe someday you can show me how to build something in there. I admire those that can work with wood and create beautiful things with it.
I had a Mini-Split put in my garage. It’s really worth the money. My garage is the same temperature as my house. In two hours time I can get my garage down to 70°. I leave my mini split on all the time and it keeps it nice at about 75 to 76°. If I’m gonna work out, as half of my garage is a gym, I’ll bring it down a couple degrees. It’s the only way to go.
Hi Jerry. That type of air conditioner is not very efficient. You can install a mini split ( like in your lanai ) or a regular window air conditioner. Costco and Amazon sells on that will hug your window ledge. It makes it more easier to lock your window for security reasons. Also will not block the sun as much so the garage will not be as dark. I believe you are not allowed to have window air conditioners in the village but I am not sure if this will violate that rule because it is in the garage. Not only will both these air conditioners be cheaper to run, they are more efficient and will cool that garage faster.
Love this video and how organized your garage is! That said, the downside to insulating so well is that the space will eventually become whatever the ‘smoothed’ daily outdoor temperature is. Too, houses and many building materials (esp. wood) need to breathe and be ventilated … Often the best first step to fixing a hot space issue is to put in an inexpensive whole house fan in the ceiling that ‘exhausts’ through the roof. With only an AC, you’re expensively battling the heat by adding cold, whereas you should just get rid of the heat first. Whole house fans are powerful and cost only a few hundred dollars, including installation. When in use, they exhaust the worst of the heat and stale air in seconds and draw in and up any cold air from the foundation (slab?). You only have to run it for a few minutes. In homes with below-grade foundations, the chill effect can be profound. When we installed one in our first Massachusetts cape’s 2nd floor ceiling, it actually drew the ashes out of our main floor fireplace around the corner! We learned fast to open our door to the basement to reduce the suction. We never had to use our AC, even on the hottest days, after that. Caveats: 1. our basement didn’t have radon, which would be an issue for some, especially if they’ve not mitigated it, and 2. Slab structures may not benefit nearly as much as those with full basements.
Not to make you feel that your garage/workshop isn't good with that air conditioner, but you 're welcome to come down the street and join me in my home workshop that I added to our house. Hello Jerry, I used a portable air conditioner in my 2 car garage in Delaware and it couldn't do the job. I finally had a twenty four thousand split air installed. Works great for cool as well as heat. You may not use the heat much. Keep the videos coming. 👍
Good afternoon, I added a mini split to my garage and it makes a huge difference. I still need to insulate the doors and ceiling. It took me about a day and a half to install it and cost 1200 bucks.
Hi Jerry & Linda, Great video as usual. You may try placing the unit on a stand. You may find it to be ore comfortable in a shorter period of time. Cold air falls due to being heavier air. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks. I am moving to TV next month and the home has an epoxy floor like yours. Should I do anything to protect it? Big pan under car and or golf car? Or does it prevent drips from penetrating, so just clean it up? My current cement floor has oil spots.
Hi Jerry, Just curious if it brought the temp down in the peak heat of the day or did it get to that temp later in the evening when the outside temp was dropping? Can you also do a follow up and let us know if it held your comfortable temp in the peak heat?
I think in hot temperature states such as Florida, garages just be included in the venting for central air; but should have its own thermostat to control as we really don’t need air blowing in there all the time. Good job Jerry.
Comment......Just by a big window unit and plant some tall bushes around that window so the neighbors will never see the window unit.....Problem solved.
Single-hose air portable air conditioners are a total waste of money and energy, especially in Florida with all the humidity. You will get *much* better results and a lot less humidity in the space being cooled by going with with a dual-hose unit. Costco sells two models in the store and they’re not that expensive, cheaper than what you paid at Lowe’s.
I was wondering about the window ac unit, if they were allowed. I wonnder since your garage is insulated and finished what it would do if you included the garage onto your current ac system. Some ductwork over to your work area and a shutoff at the source duct. It might work your system more , but it may be more comfortable.
This unit has a connection in the back to run tubing for drainage. I wonder if using that would help as it would reduce interrupting cooling when it does its evap cycles?
Is there a way you could run that continuously throughout the hot season or you don’t want to do that because of cost? But smart idea! You c as m gave your man cave!
I hope that unit continues to work well, even in the hottest part of the day, and that it doesn’t raise your electric bill too much! Our garage doesn’t have a window like yours. It just has a set of 9 square, opaque glass blocks on the outside wall up high, near the ceiling.
Jerry, I was wondering if you kept any of your woodworking tools. My shop is currently in my 2 1/2 car garage with only 2 walls insulated. But I have a heater for winter and a window a/c for summer. Its was a used 8,000 btu unit, so it works to cool it down. I turn it on in the morning, before coffee and use a fan also. It gets to 75 or 78 which isnt bad. But by 3:00 pm it starts to heat up, so I go in. Why didn't you get a window a/c? I think it wolud be cheaper to buy and operate it. And do a better job.
If you could somehow arrange to turn on that AC unit in the early morning before the outside temperature began to rise it might be able to hold the temperature at 82 more easily than it lowered it to 82 so your working hours would be extended.
I feel your pain Jerry. I have a 2 car garage in California. It has been over 105 for most of the summer. There is no way I can be in the garage for more than 10 minutes without starting to sweat. I had a neighbor help me wire up a ceiling fan. It just pushes the hot air around. It feels like your standing in front of the furnace because air is not being exchanged. I bought a box fan to push air out, and raised the garage door to just the height of the fan. That did not help. I dont have a window in my garage. I think I am going to have to buy what they call a "mini split" that actually uses a small condenser that is like the one that we all have on our back patio for the main air conditioner. My house AC is set to 76. Im not sure I could handle 82 in my garage. Sorry. Probably more information than you wanted. Good luck to you.
We have such a unit on our garage. It does help. That afternoon sun just makes the garage an oven for me to putter around and we found a solution. Glad you did Jerry.
If anyone wants a more efficient unit for a garage, a mini-split would be the best choice for a higher price point. The window Jerry used would be perfect for a midea U-shape 12,000 btu window A/C for ~$400. These portable A/C is not very efficient due to their design, but its better than nothing.
Everything in your garage is 92 also, so that little thing has to cool all that stuff down too. Everytime you turn it on it’s going to have to cool down everything in the garage. Don’t think this was a great buy. Sorry.
You’re throwing money away Jerry. Get a window unit if you don’t want to pay the cost of a mini split system. If you still want to go with a portable unit then purchase one that can handle 600 square feet and comes with a dual exhaust. Stay cool my friend.
Last week I was at the lake and the water temp was like bath water! So, I threw my 5# bag of ice into the lake to cool it down. Man, it worked great, and only cost me like $3.49. My neighbors say I am a genius. There you go, boys and girls. 😵💫
@@TheGregWallace For me it'd be worth it, putting in a proper remedy. A much better solution is to use a dual-hose portable A/C instead of a single hose unit like this one. Dual hose units don’t cause humidity problems like single hose units do. Return that unit and get one that will take care of you sq. ft. area. Waiting 6 hrs to cool down is too long. Or better yet install a Mini Split system. My friend has one in his home machine shop and it works well. He lives in Inverness.
You are going to hate your power bill trying to cool down your garage with that little POS. You would have been far better off buying an appropriate sized split system.
The unit will cool better if you provide an additional hose for air to go to the condenser from directly outside, The problem is that the air that is exhausting is being made up of hot air being pulled from outside the garage. therefore you are trying to cool outside air. I have the same unit that I installed on a vintage canned ham camper. I modified the unit with an additional duct to cover the the intake for the condenser and the unit performs outstanding. before the mod it did not cool very well because the air was always being replaced by outside hot air.

Return that unit and get one that will take care of you sq. ft. area. Waiting 6 hrs to cool down is too long.
Or better yet install a Mini Split system. My friend has one in his home machine shop and it works well. He lives in Inverness.
93 degrees us a big chore.
@@JERRYANDLINDA You're using too small of a BTU unit.
You are going to hate your power bill trying to cool down your garage with that little POS. You would have been far better off buying an appropriate sized split system.
THere might be a drain in unit on the back near base.
Did you get that unit free to demonstrate the model?
I used a gift card.
Can't you get a noname minisplit for the same price? It would be more effective, though the installation is a bit more complicated.
When you said you would like a bigger garage your accent changed and you sounded like Trump. 😂😂
Why not put a window AC in?
Not allowed.
@@JERRYANDLINDA ahh, I see
@@JERRYANDLINDA We won’t tell😜😉
The unit will cool better if you provide an additional hose for air to go to the condenser from directly outside, The problem is that the air that is exhausting is being made up of hot air being pulled from outside the garage. therefore you are trying to cool outside air. I have the same unit that I installed on a vintage canned ham camper. I modified the unit with an additional duct to cover the the intake for the condenser and the unit performs outstanding. before the mod it did not cool very well because the air was always being replaced by outside hot air.
Any idea how much it costs to run?
I believe the annual cost is listed as $115. Not sure how it breaks down. I'll find out.
@@JERRYANDLINDA🤦😱😂
What would you do if you didn’t have window in your garage?
Swelter. 😛
Nice but you will probably have somebody report you for the vent out the window
I don't think that is a violation. The person that lived here before me had one.
@@JERRYANDLINDA That's funny, the person before you might not have gotten turned in. Happens all the time.
Hey Jerry, we don't have any windows in our garage.
Run it all night.
if you know you are going to work the next day, start it before you go to bed... nothing like working on a project at 75 degrees !!!!
