Concerning what you said for the "first mile" ... Decades ago I read(!) in outdoor guides (yes, back then there was no internet and you bought printed "travel guides") that after about a quarter of an hour you should take a short break to adjust everything for the rest of the day: you started in too warm clothes because you feel cold at the beginning, but now you're warmed up to "operating temperature" and can take off what's too much. Now it's usually also time to readjust all the straps of your backpack and you're good to go for the next stage. That's how I've always done it since then and it's worked well for all the years years. For everyone who was born into the metric system: When you talk about temperatures (e.g. here: temperature ranges for clothes), it would be extremely helpful if you would always show the °C conversion as text. You've already done that in some videos. What a relief, because you have viewers all over the world, even in those remote regions that still use the metric system.
Bryce! Great video! I enjoy your humor throughout the technical difficulties. I have to agree with you about Darn Tough socks, as much as I love them and have owned one pair for winter hiking for 6 years and it has not worn out yet. The down-side is that their "hiking weight" socks tend to retain moisture and are a bit too warm for the summer months here in Utah. Every Smartwool sock I've ever owned has worn out with weekly wear after a year. What I've switched to is Farm to Feet, specifically the Damascus model, they're super breathable, and since I've been wearing them every day for work for over a year and they are still intact without signs of thinning!
I have a few pairs of Darn Tough that I wear weekly and have worn weekly for about 3 or 4 years depending on the pair. They are still in excellent condition! Not good condition but truly excellent condition. I'm blown away by the durability.
“Liner” haha. We have very similar ideologies for clothing choices. Tights are the way to go. Love em. Running shorts, for sure. Fleece mid-later, oh yes. Puffy, yep. Good stuff Bruce. Cheers.
Yea man. Tights are the new pants! Running shorts no liner nothing underneath, tights if its really cold, rain skirt or wind/light rain pants for late fall winter. Works like a champ. Glad to see Im not the only one that spends 20 plus minutes on a 5 minute topic....😁
I've noticed several TH-cam channels transition from being entertaining to becoming pitchmen for products that have been given them. That's about the time I usually unsubscribe. Your advice on getting the cheaper clothes is refreshing!
Thank you! I have entertained the idea of sponsored videos but only if I truly approve of the product. We creators spend so much time on videos that at some point we need to make some cash to keep doing it. For instance, I spent an hour filming this Monday, then the next 2 days to edit. probably close to 10 hours editing. It would be easier if I didnt mess up and didnt need to cut things. And hour of footage cut down to 22 min! Only to make $10 so far on youtube. I love making videos, but the more I go the more I want/need compensated. I don't want to "sell out" but I am ok with creators trying to make some extra money to help them put out more videos. Thanks for the comment! A topic ive been meaning to address
Hello Bryce, thank you for sharing this informative and entertaining video. I really enjoyed it. Please keep up your great videos. All the best to you and your family. See you on the next one. 🤗
One extra merino, or synthetic, underwear pair and one pair extra socks. Long nylon hiking pants if I know the trail is brushy or weedy. You are a beast for handling the mesh or netted liners in running shorts - I hate those liners rubbing on me !! A person can score a decent fleece at Decathlon Sports for anywhere from $12.00 to 20's, depending on weight and features. They have the zipper on the European side, as it is a French company. These are not bullet- proof, but they have been with me for 2 years (I have 3), and they work fine. Darn Toughs are indeed tough, IMO, but they have a high nylon content (usually around 50%). I prefer a nearly 100% wool sock if it's going to be chilly. Wigwam is a decent brand priced a lot less than Smart Wool. Enjoy the Bryce gear ethos, keep it rolling ! Your next DIY project, should you accept It, is a Tyvek rain skirt !
I haven’t been in the temps as low as you, but with temps around freezing I go with basically the same. UA tights, running shorts, T-shirt, long sleeve running shirt, montbell wind shirt, puffy. Oh and a buff as a beanie! Keep it simple. I bring spare T, shorts and socks. Mostly the T and shorts just to keep my quilt from getting funky!
I run a very similar setup, it's really all you need to do various things. Set of clothing, set of wool thermals, windjacket, rain jacket, fleece upper, some kind of technical moistwicking longsleeve from RAB that is extremely breathable (paires fantastic with the wind jacket, now it traps heat) down bodywarmer, beany, spare socks and undies, buff, wool gloves. I don't allways bring all of it but it has suited me to well bellow the 30s, and allows me to take my 350 gram sleeping bag into the thirties. I ditched the fleece upper a couple of years ago because it's bulky, but now that my other gear has become so small that doesn't matter and a fleece is a really nice final layer next to a campfire, and a cushion or pillow. I don't do shorts, but bought softshell pants from Mamut that used a "3x dry" fabric. It's amazing how one long pair of black pants can keep you cool when it's hot, warm(ish) when it's cold, reasonably dry an very comfortable when it's wet. And of course keeps the bugs away. I've used it for almost 11 years now, had to patch it up after being pierced by a branch and I allready resent the day I must replace it. It's probably my favourite pieces of gear.
I walk with the knee high smart wool socks in fall with the just above knee shorts like it’s 1985. But you throw on some tights and Montbell tachyon or some enlightened equipment copper fields and you have your winter hiking set up for the bottoms.
I ride mtn bikes often so there's wind I ride with rain jackets and get sweaty when it's snowing or raining. Walking is nicer cause then I stay cooler. Thin shirts dry quick too meditate in the winter by the time you get too cold shirts are dry.
"I didn't really want that color but I found a good deal on it." I love finding awesome prices on less popular colors. Some are so bad though, even I have to turn it down. Like an enlightened equipment sleeping bag I saw in hot pink and camo lol.
rocking a bright orange pack, led to an orange hammock chair, eyeing an orange puffy. can't say I own anything orange outside of hiking gear. also good for hunting season.
Pre-sellout Smartwools were the best. My 20 year old one's outlast brand new versions. They're dead to me in favor of Darn Tough now, but would go back to Smartwool circa 2000 in a heartbeat.
Simple. Basic. Minimalist. Love it. Easy watching, and still entertaining. Really like your channel! (Just something for you to read and I sure don’t expect a response!). 😉
I hike in tights as well. Here in northern Michigan we got tick machines, just crank em out. Ticks Hate nylons and tights so that's why I wear em. Just wanted to ask what kind you wear.??
I went on a backpacking trip this past November where I wore a beat up pair of running tights that I've probably owned for 20 years. They worked so well for me on the trail that I'm going to find it hard to hike in pants in the future. Yeah, a guy might look a bit silly dressed like that, but I'm used to riding my bike all kitted out in spandex, so I already have little shame!
@@BryceNewbold I hike in the sub- tropics, where you start in the jungle but climb up to 1000 m - 3000m alpine, and I feel synthetic tights are the only way to go.
I go back and forth between my Smartwool socks and Darn Toughs, too. They're fairly interchangeable; it's really the exchange program that puts DT ahead, but I don't go through socks like that, and even if I did, I think I'd rather give money to the company that makes them. My real love are the Injinji toe socks, but I've just had SO MANY problems with the durability. It's a real bummer. I can't hike more than 50 miles or so before they inevitably get a hole in them. So disappointing.
I have both smartwool and darn tough. particular sock shoe combo for me is the smart wool and salomon trail runners. I get less friction with smartwools, but they are thinner and not as warm in cold.
I guess the fact that I could tell what you were drinking from the back of the bottle at the beginning of the video says something about me. Not sure if I'm bragging or ashamed. Thanks for the video.
Great video. I've modeled a lot of my gear after you. Shawnee is a torture test for Ohio. Especially in the summer. I'd say I'd like to go with you but there's no way I could keep up. Looking forward to more videos
Cold weather camping terrifies me because I cannot stand being cold. Going to stretch my comfort zone in a couple weeks. It will probably only be in the 30s at night but that is super cold for me. I have a fleece base layer, super warm socks, and and long pants and long sleeve shirt to sleep in. I have a 15 degree bag. In your opinion, is that enough to stay warm overnight? I am not worried about hiking during the day as I always get warm once I am moving.
I started wearing “Legs” wineralls tights as a base while winter hiking and bow hunting a decade ago, I picked up on it when the announcers of an NFL game mentioned the players we’re using them during a sub zero game !
I love my tights and if you want to wear pants i recommend packing some stretch super skinny jeans because they are actually quite comfortable and they don't catch on anything. I have some skinny fit cargo pants that are tight but so soft and stretchy and they've been great for short casual hikes and walks.
a heavy Mountain Hardwear Versteeg, its discontinued. and sometimes a 6oz Columbia jacket that I got at Dick's for $30... Its not very waterproof however.
Crazy how I recognized you so easily when at Mohican a few weeks back. If I remember correctly you were not wearing tights with shorts or did I see your green puffy.
😂🤣 free balling in the summertime I think every hiker and bikepacker does that If they are male I think the words you are looking for is a jockstrap or a men's liner shorts

I like the compresion of the CEP tights...
I’ve been known to hike in compression underwear when I get chaffed. Tights in the winter under my pants are life 😍 Awesome stuff bro 👍
