The Mantle/Musial part of this speech is probably the most beautiful oratory about baseball that's been told. Every fan of baseball should watch this speech and learn something from Stan.
Stan and Mickey had same commons. Their dads worked in coal mines (Musial in PA and Mantle in Okla) I believe Mickey listened ball game on radio, and fond of Stan. Later Mickey got signed with Yankees and Mickey got #6 uniform ( Musial wore#6 too) and bit later he had problem not hitting and sent him to Kansas City Blues. His parents drove up to see Mickey playing.. he told them he thought to quit baseball (I read in google)Dad said if Mickey quit, then Dad would pull him to work in coal mine as hit Mickey’s thought (I imagine he said oh no) then he started to pick to hit and was recalled back to Yankees and unfortunately, he got #7 uniform and that was how his history was made.
@@richardmiller3919 Mantle got #6 with the Yankees at first because he was expected to automatically be the next in the line of Yankee greats with Ruth being #3, Gehrig #4 and DiMaggio #5 and now Mickey was expected to be the next one before he even did anything in the majors. You would imagine that would put a lot of pressure on a rookie.
PERFECTLY STATED
I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AGREE
CRYING again as bob is tearing up
SO DAMN TOUCHING
SO DAMN "sobering" (no pun intended, really)
Mr. Costas is a flawless speaker. I can listen to him brushing his teeth.
Haha yes!! thank you so much. be sure to subscribe to the channel. God bless!
I attended a special Olympic event with my daughter at the Yale Bowl in 1995. The crowd was noisy and not settling down to hear the start of the ceremony. Arnold tried but no go, Then Costos took over and within moments and the audience was attentive. One of the best of all broadcasters. This is a deeply moving eulogy, Since I was a fan of Stan beginning at age 11 and to the end of his career. It brings tears. Wonderful to know that a childhood hero was as wonderful as that young boy imagined him to be from all that was said about him in the press.
@@johnschuh8616 Thank you for your comment. It's own thoughtfulness invited me to watch this video once again. I had forgotten how good it was. Much appreciated.
Bob was about to cry a few times because the WONDERFULLY DECENT , GREAT STAN THE MAN's LIFE STORY WAS SO MOVING

@@BigBudde God 🙏 bless you too.
Stan is, has always been, and will always be MY MAN. I was born in 71, i never saw him play, but my father instilled in me a proper respect for the game and history of baseball
In 4th grade i had to do a report on a famous Missourian, i chose Stan Musial and it forever changed me, a one sided love affair started
Hes the most underrated , criminally so, ball player of all time, maybe even most underrated sports player of all time
But if i could sum up Stans life i couldnt come close to doing as well as Costas
I dont just "tear up" , TEARS STREEEEEAM down my face during this amazing eulogy, one of the most beautiful speeches ive ever hearr
Thanks bob
Thanks whoever posted this
And above all thanks to Stan for being the incredible "thoroughly decent " person you were
Stan the Man forever
Thank you and God Bless!
“Here stands baseball’s perfect warrior. Here stands baseballs perfect knight” wow that got me.

But I would proudly ,if asked, say "I'm crying over one of the best speeches I've ever heard, the best eulogy I've ever heard to one of the best men ever- STAN THE MAN"

I wasn't old enough to have seen him play - only 1 when he retired. But later, as a young fan of the game, I had a huge book of statistics covering back into the 19th century that I frequently poured over. Numerous times I would look at Musial's career stat line and pause in awe, feeling my mouth agape, each time as if for the first time. Thanks for posting this, and thanks to Bob Costas, who is a true legend in my mind and to my ears, for fleshing out my deep admiration, and now deeper feeling.

I'm only a Costas interview fan. But watched this twice. He really has you yourself in tears when he gets extra real. And it was great to hear the ALL STAR game story about decency and acceptance. It's all the world asks of any of us..

We moved to St. Louis in 1961. I was a baseball fanatic. My memories are of the unique Stan stance at the plate and a home run to right. That summer I got to play in a Khoury League all star game on a kid sized diamond in right field. What a thrill to step on the same turf trod by over twenty years by my idol.

Stan Musial was a legend, and still to this day:bigger than the gane and coverage from the news media he truly deserved as the complete player. No drama Stan.

I met BC about 25 years ago, he was so nice 2 me. This is the best eulogy of all time. I want him 2 speak at my funeral, but that would last about 30 seconds, LOL 😆.
The sheer decency of The Man.

How do you summarize Bob Costas accept to say he is great and has been for decades. The fact that Stan Musial wanted Bob to speak at his memorial says so much.

"Take a look fans, take a good long look. Remember the swing and the stance. We won't see his like again." Rest in Peace Stan the Man.
This has to be, by far, the most emotional that Costas has been in public.
Its more than 4 years later and ive got tears streaming down my face.
awww. thank you for that comment =)
and Im an Aussie that has spent a total of 3 days of my life in St Louis. But ive loved the Cards since 1982 and of course all the history of which 50% is Stan.
Epic speech - loved all the stories, especially the "deal me in" one.
I know that Bob Costas said that ultimately if he were alive, the eulogy would be Jack Buck' to present, but there is no way it could possibly be better than Bob's. As good, maybe, but in a different kind of way. Bob is SUCH a wordsmith! As I told some friends, I want him to do the eulogy for my funeral because he would make my semi-average life WAY more interesting.
Well done Mr. Costas. Very well done.
I don't know if it's polite to applaud after a eulogy, but I just did.
haha yeah it was gooood
This is why Cardinal Nation and the city of St. Louis is the best. What other city has all of its sports connected to each other in some way and the most passionate fans? Just why I love being a St. Louisan!
My goodness, I haven't cried that much since my dad died. That was a marvelous tribute by a remarkable sports broadcaster for one of my childhood idols. Just heart wrenching.
There are a few videos that bring an instant river of tears. This is one of them. The perfect eulogy for the perfect man. I've watched this video dozens of times in the last three years. All I have to do is think about it and I start loosing it.
This and Luckiest man on the face of the Earth speech.
One of the greatest and heartfelt eulogies I've ever heard.
Stan truly was “The man”.

Deal me in......i almost lost it there.... i love Stan Musial..
I enjoyed watching Stan Play when he came to Cincinnati, but I didn't enjoy watching him sometime single handedly beat the Reds. I remember him hitting the ball out of the park, and as he rounded the bases, my dad said to me, you are watching one of the greatest of all time. Yea Dad, you were so right, and all so one of the greatest human beings.
this always makes me tear up, a great speech
GOD bless you Stan, as a boy in the early 50's I listened to Harry call a homer by you at the original Busch Stadium. You will always be the favorite son of St. Louis.
Amen
The Greatest Cardinal ever. No slight on Pujols who loved ''The Man".
+cards1985 yup. thanks for the comment!
Pujols could not hold a candle to Musial. For one , Musial didn't rely on steroids for his record.
Pujols would be the first to agree with you
The PRIVILEGE of being a Cardinals fan is something I always treasure !!!!
I never saw Stan play, I'm much too young
But in 4th grade I did a report on a "famous Missourian"
As a very young Cardinals fan I chose the "Greatest Cardinal of them all" - STAN THE MAN
WOW!!!!
Our collective love and admiration for "The Man" will be forever
thank you for sharing this
you're right. simply brilliant! thanks so much. God bless!

thanks! yes this speech is a masterpiece =)
I heard about this eulogy today at a Memorial Celebration for Marty J Capodice in Concord NH. It was held at the Capitol Center for the Arts, in part because it was Marty's second home and in part because it was big enough for all the people who came.
One of Marty's personal heroes was Stan Musial. Marty's wife Arnie saw this eulogy and Costas' comment that Hank Aaron(?) said he didn't just like Stan Musial, he wanted to be like Stan Musial. That caught Arnie's attention because she had heard the same thing from several of their friends.
Marty was an amazing person, he chose the right role model. RIP to both.
Honored to have been named after The Man.
One very decent man. A rarity today.
john dates amen
Awesome speech bob

Again, how does anyone dislike this?
So beautiful.
Ask an asswipe like Robert Lipsyte.
STAN WAS A GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER BUT A GREATER HUMANITARIAN. A GREAT MAN SPOKEN OF BY ANOTHER GREAT MAN
i dont always agree with bob but man this touched me
my kid number is 6 like stan the man
Costas is a smart guy and good speaker. He'd have made a good lawyer too...
Does anyone know where can I find the text of this eulogy?
ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY HIS HUMANITY
Check out costas talk abiut vin scully. Brilliant speech.
me too =)
The racist at fox news should hear this-& I'm a republican saying this.
i do not know... thought it might have been Pujols but we couldn't keep him around
Have heard Musila say that if he had had free agency he would have left, too, Instant millionaire. But then he would not be the only ball player to be loved by an entire big city. Notice how Cardinal Dolan hung on every word. Me. too.
Young Bobby Costas has now joined his idols, Stan the Man and The Mick in Cooperstown.
Well done my old friend. I first heard you doing the Spirits of St. Louis games in the 70s, and on the late great Jack Carney show on KMOX in STL. I knew then that if you kept your nose clean and worked hard, you'd achieve greatness in your chosen profession, and you did both. Here's a clip of your early work from 1975.
