I love the idea of making an npc stat block that is both character driven so it *feels* like they're their own person, but also simple enough for a player to run while in combat. It adds to the investment because players now get to play their npc friend for a little bit, and it takes the pressure off you! The freedom for players to connect in a way you want with the npcs you give them or the world in general, without making too much extra work for yourself. 30 minutes of building that can be done over breakfast.
This is maybe the most useful video on this topic!!! Thank you for actually using concrete advice about how to mechanically build the NPC, everything is explained super clearly!! Thanks
I was struggling with creating some hireable NPCs for my lv 20 party. I found multiple videos, but all talked about the personality of the NPCs, despite the fact that I specifically asked for stat block help. Your video was the first I came across that helped for building NPC stat blocks, and it really helped me out! Thank you so much!
this is a great formula! I really wanna add companion NPC crewmates for the spelljammer game I'm planning, but I've been grappling with making sure they won't be DMPCs lol. I'll definitely give this method a shot :-)
I absolutely love this! I've been running a 1 on 1 campaign with my best friend due to scheduling conflicts. 🙄 I'm trying to bring the rest of the party in but it is slow going... You videos make it a lot easier to navigate some of the crunchier terrain of planning and this is going to go a long way to making a cast of fun NPCs that can work as temporary traveling companions. ♡
I dont know wher eoyu got those abl, and level progressions from! but the card finalized looked! amazing cool, solid idea. I def. going to use this! I wonder if its also works for animals. fairy's and awakened plants. or items. this way, i can gift my players soemthign they seen in shows. and looking forward too
Nice system! How do you think it could be extended to support more monstrous pets and companions? You know, parties making pets out of owlbears and bulettes, that kind of thing.
I mean for those kinds of monsters it's usually fine to just run them with the stat blocks provided since they're unlikely to have unique abilities before being encountered by the party. The fact you can also ride something like an owlbear/bulette etc. also gives them an extra use. If they have a personality trait that you want to emphasize you can give them an extra ability or skill proficiency (for example a cute owlbear cub might be proficient in persuasion, or give advantage on persuasion checks to a party member once per day).
No I feel this, or they want to adopt the baby wyrmlings, and get sad when the wyrmlings steal their food and run away

I had the exact same problem!! This is my first time being a DM, and I have no idea what I’m doing lmao
