Excellent vlog! It’s astounding how little, if anything, Americans (or many other foreigners, know about historic or contemporary Spain. You are doing a great service by enriching their knowledge. Thank you!
Hey James and Yoly, thanks for your guidance in your video series. We (my wife Shannon and I) had an unexpected trip to Spain come up and these videos are so very helpful if cutting through the noise. We came through Barcelona last week and had a fantastic meal / experience at Can Romanet. And yes, there was an attempted pick-pocket incident, fortunately we were aware and averted the situation. We are in Madrid now and will be downtown exploring this Friday if you want to meet for a Sangria or Vermouth. Reach out if you are free and interested in seeing if we can connect. We also got set up on Express VPN and really appreciated that resource too. Thanks you both!
I'm a big fan of this format with you guys playing off each other and offering a fascinating insider's view and outsider's view of what's happening in Spain now. Good job guys!
Let's keep northern Spain a secret. I fell in love with the Basque Country over 10 years ago when my then girlfriend brought me to meet her abuela and tīa. The weather in the north is amazing.
si porfa xd como pais superturistico no debemos revelar lo poco que nos queda jajaajaj me gusta ir al norma a playas asturianas con poca gente y plena naturaleza
I’m afraid it’s too late for that. But, it’s possible to take proactive steps and do things like banning Airbnb, and similar regulations to keep the place from becoming a tourist trap where the locals get crowded out and priced out. This should go a long way towards minimising the crunch on the North.
As a Spanish teacher to secondary school teenagers in Ireland I find your videos invaluable, so informative and authentic to really show what modern Spain is like as well as the traditional side of the culture such as the recent 'El Colacho' and 'Semana Santa' among so much more that you've done. I get very excited every time you've published a new video.
Spanish or Catalonian people usually hate Jews gypsies Russian speakers and black-skinned people that don't come from a part of Europe? I met hate from a few Europeans in Spain for speaking another language and not looking as Spanish German or other European . but what to do I never apologize for my family race or nationality origins as I'm only an imperfect human.
Japan and Spain are very similar in many aspects. One thing from japan that Spain could implement is the “hometown tax” where if you live in a city you can allocate part of your taxes to go directly into a small town and in exchange the, small town sends you a small gift bag with local products. This way off the path areas are kept alive and people are inclined to go visit them since they are well kept thus strengthening the economy of the local tourism. The last thing is the more you grow the train network the more people move around and move money around thus helping more places in spain have strong economies.
Unless we’ve been taking a long nap over the past 3-4 decades, we all have taken notice that the “Ways of Living” in most of the parts of the planet has changed dramatically. You can say a lot of this about almost 85% of the places around the world. I don’t know about others, but my wife and I are retiring to Playa de San Juan de Alicante this year; and never expected to go back to the same Spain that we experienced and loved so much back in the 80s when we were students living in Madrid for over two and a half years. We migrated to Canada after Spain; lived there for over 8 years and then migrated to the United States and been living here for over 25 years; and both countries are almost unrecognizable from what we saw and experienced the first time we set foot in them. What happened; you might ask. Well, life happened; people happened; politics and economics happened. Spain is no different. Imagine what would a couple of young immigrants who move to Spain today would say about the country 30 or 40 years from now… And oh by the way, tapas was never a healthy way of eating; so no wonder the younger generations have dropped them from their priorities 😊
You must be kidding. tapas are far more healthy than the hot dogs o de burgers and all those disgusting foods that Americans are so fond of eating. In regards to politics, you might express your own likes, but do not say that Vox is a far right party, because that shows your ignorance towards a party that has only common sense in his ideas.
@@KOIFishcattapas are mostly fried finger food. it’s the Spanish equivalent of pub food. Not exactly healthy. They have excellent healthy food but it’s not tapas.
@evanmcmullin994 depends on the idea and your view of a good restaurant idea. I did specifically say franchises but I'm also going to include chain restaurants. Some business models are easily repeatable and get financial backing allowing them to grow faster than others. I'm not sure Dierks Bentley's Whiskey restaurant is really that much of a "good idea". It was good enough and had enough financial backing. Do we need those kind of good ideas or do we need more single location family owned restaurants? Just because something can be successful in a basically unregulated free market economy, doesn't mean it's universally a good idea. It's a good idea to win at the game of capitalism, but is it best for our society, culture, wealth distribution, etc.?
The franchises are globalized restaurants, void of personal touch and atmosphere. They are predictable and sterile. Support family restaurants and your local people. It’s also why people love Europe. I haven’t heard of people travel to the US for food experiences. US is full of franchises.
Minimum wage increase bill hurts mom n pop the most. Thats why they're slowly going away while franchises stay. I live in a neighborhood that's close to busy districts n the turnovers of local restaurants annually are pretty high. It's pretty normal
My wife and I moved to Malaga over 2 years ago from the U.S. We have enjoyed your channel since before we moved here. We have noticed the changes here, from commercial restaurants edging out traditional restaurants and tapas bars. Luckily, there are still mom and pop establishments left in our area. Thank you
@gomezalic8515 A favorite place for us, Bar Casa Matas in Benalmádena close to Malaga. Mostly local residents in there, but they welcome all. A daily menu of the day, reasonably priced, great meal, delicious homemade soups.
@msvideotime Moved for a Non- Lucrative Visa (NLV) documents sent to the SF Spanish embassy. All required documents were translated into Spanish. We were required to show income, medical cert., letter of intent, and application docs. Our process took 30-45 days during 2021 COVID-19
Es mejor cuando los dos están juntos. Tus perspectivas mescladas son fascinantes. Tengan coraje! Estas temas valen más que esas de la mayoria de otros videos de España, por ejemplo, comidas y playas, comidas y playas. Saludos de Nueva Zelanda :)
Welcome back Yoly, we've missed you! Wonderful to see you (and James). Enjoy this new format -- it's really engaging and feels like friends sharing first-hand information about/from Spain on a range of topics. Enjoyed the video and would love to see more (on post-election, changes since COVID, new travel locales in-country, why food tastes better in Spain, etc.) -- please keep them coming! Thank you.
I like a bit of variety and I enjoyed this episode seeing you both in the driver’s seat giving your take on dynamic Spain. This country has been an excellent host for me over the last 39 years.
Yoly’s baaaack! So good to see the two of you on screen again, together. Thanks for another super informative video. Love the format, love the range of topics. I think a mix of this lighter format along with your deeper dive takes when you explore a single topic in more detail keep the channel fresh and they definitely keep Rosa and I coming back again and again.
Also, forgot to say thank you for that marvellous episode on train travel! I used your help to book all our tickets on Trainline recently and we took the Iryo options. Can’t wait for September!
Well done James and welcome back Yoly. This format reminds me of the good old days when you both discussed and shared relative information about Spain. Keep up the good work and keep us informed.
I've lived in the USA since 1988, I'm gonna retire in 5 years and was hoping to retire in Spain. I hope Spain stays Spain 🇪🇸 by the time I want to move there. Love your videos.
@@felikesmeerssen3263 that happens to any person who has been away from their country for more than a decade. Our world is in constant movement thus changes are inevitable
!!@ricky8alta!! I´m spanish and i can see here that there are may crazy people, Spain is Spain and will be Spain in the next future, Welcome at any time,, best regards from Malaga!!
Yo soy español y lo de los bares creo q es solo en pueblos pequeños y en ciudades grandes, como decís, pero en ciudades pequeñas siguen siendo la mayoría
You two should know that I have never subscribed to ANY TH-cam channel (other than maybe NASA's) before a friend introduced me to you and Spain Revealed. I love your channel! This kind of background and context I find invaluable. My family and I visited Spain (and Portugal) for the first time in May. We have to thank you so much for the insights you shared in previous videos that helped make our trip stupendous! It was just wonderful. And now that I've been once, I want to go again and get further into the countryside (we visited Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona). I think it's important to not show up as a tourist in any country kind of oblivious to what's happening there. And I think the further off the beaten path one ventures, the better it is not to be ignorant of what's actually happening in the country. I like that what you're doing is not just "Spanish Food Revealed" but the whole country revealed. So please keep it up! :)
I live in the US, and am planning a move to Spain next spring. I am TOTALLY burnt out on US politics specifically, and political discussions in general, but I do like the way you presented the political situation in Spain, and I am definitely interested in the situation there. And thumbs up on a Yoly appearance!
If you are fed up with US politics then I do not advise you to come to Spain, nor to France. The political climate here has been deteriorating at an increased pace since the 1980’s and 1990’s, and prospects are very bad, IMHO.
Politics have changed as the media have changed. And by the media I mean the inruption of the internet and the change in the sources of funding from traditional media. We will take time to adapt but we will end up finding ways to inform ourselves in an impartial way, like this channel!
I first lived in Spain in 2010, and then on and off again for almost 4 years before moving to Germany a year ago. Spain has definitely changed since 2010, and you did a great job pointing out many of the ways in which it has changed. Do you think Spain will ever open up a "Tapas Bar Visa" to keep the tapas bars up and running so they don't lose that history? If so, count me in!
Loved this! I didn’t realize how much I missed the James and Yoly videos like these!!! More please! As much as I love Spain and learning about food and culture, I feel like I know very little about their politics. Personally, I’d love for you to do more of these. Side note- the “me” that arrived to Spain for study abroad in 2008 the the “me” that left was a different person politically. I went from being super conservative to much more moderate. I became a more empathetic and open minded person. So, despite the history of Spain being a conservative country, it actually changed me… and for the better. ☺️
Great video! My wife and I have always dreamed of retiring in Spain, but the recent changes in climate are making us reconsider that, or at least look more at places like Galicia, Cantabria, or the Basque country, or even France. (Granted, we still have another 20 years because it's nearly impossible to retire if you live in the US...) It's interesting to hear natives' perspectives on all of it. Que sigan con estes videos chéveres!
I'd stay away from Spanish autonomous regions with active separatist movements like Cataluña and Euskadi. Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias are a much safer bet.
thanks for all of the info. Looks like Spain is on my horizon due to a relatively new relationship, so it's nice to hear different perspectives and how the country has evolved over the years.
I would also like to add that I agree with Yoli about the bars being crowded and to give her argument a bit more weight, you all know that once you have children, your life is never the same. Mi disabuela trajo mi abuelo de espana durante la influenza de 1918 y no se como sobrivirieron. Un dia este 'emigrante nieta' va a espana. Gracias y bravo.
Great format loved it! Visited Spain in April "23 and fell in love with Madrid- in particular the people and the vibe. Tell us more about what it is like for older adults in Spain. ( From our observations it looks like an amazing place to grown old!)
and they never talk about countries like france that are on the brink of loosing their culture . These people are a joke and should not talk politics....stick with what your good at.
We’re SO EXCITED to be visiting Spain in a couple of days! We found your content and it’s making us even more excited! Our 20th anniversary bucket list trip! Thanks so much for all these tips!
In Fuengirola over the last 5 years, the Ayuntamiento has been giving grants out to local businesses and Tapas bars to "modernise" and improve the look of the area, totally ruining them and upgrading them to Restaurant status......many places i have spent time with my parents, built great memories now destroyed.
I noticed how Fuengirola has gone more upmarket the last time I holidayed there, in May. Yes some places seem to have become more gentrified and modernised, sometimes at the expense of atmosphere and character! Prices are escalating there, especially in property it seemed to me? All the chiringuitos have been upgraded and now look quite swish, some you can't even sit at the bar anymore.
Super video! Touching on these topics is important and you did it with sensitivity and intelligence. Very helpful for those of us who have moved to Spain and still learning about the country.
I live in Spain more than 8 years. And as imigrant i preffer live far from imigrants disctricts or social districts, it is very high crime, violence, garbage etc. I think Spain is about colapse with imigrant population in future if they will not do something with that. I think normal imigrant population up to 4 generations it is 10 percentage. but in Spain it will hit more than 60% in end of 21 century follow predictions if policity will not change. I dont wanna say nothing bad, but despite i love spain, i am not investing inside Spanish stock market because i am not sure about future of Spain in next 100 years.
Thanks for your videos guys! I have been watching your video since 2019 when I was about to come to Spain but covid had me delay that for a year, but its been almost 2 and a half years I have completed my studies and working here, yes thats how much I love Madrid, Spain. Big thanks to you two, I can now relate to most of the things that you have said is absolutely true and can vouch for the same. However, one topic which is hmm super complicated is spanish politics, if you could make videos on the future of spain from spanish politics to understand it better from expats point of view just an overview for example, its super difficult to follow the news lately.
Yoly - 'I can't cope with busy tapas bars' James - 'Who are you and what have you done with Yoly' Great format for info sessions, say quarterly. I really hope that the traditional tapas bar does not disappear as that is my favourite aspect of Spanish culture/lifestyle or whatever you want to call it.
I love this format addition to your channel! Please continue to incorporate these in the future. It would be interesting to get in depth interviews with some of the immigrants that you mentioned which have opened Asian and Mexican restaurants/stores, to understand their story, challenges, etc.
Count me amongst the people who find crowded tapas bars intimidating, especially with my limited language skills. As Yoly said, it takes a lot of energy to carve out your space and defend it. I prefer to get there early, get my corner table and let the crowd fill in around me. I think the craziness of the tapas bar is turning more people who find the table service at restaurants more relaxing.
It's not bad technique, but famous places will always be full xD, don't be afraid that in Spain we are used to tourism, there are many possibilities that they speak English, you follow the videos so as not to end up in a tourist trap. prepare a sentence: "una cerveza por favor" "gracias" "cuanto es?" "la cuenta por favor" and with this you go to the end of the world
In light of the recent elections in Spain, I would like to add my vote for the channel to have Yoly be more present in videos. I can imagine that her mommy duties cannot always give her the opportunity (or energy) to participate in the videos, but when she is able to, I would love to see her. Climate change is a real concern and more people living here means less resources for everyone. Valencia isn't getting a lot of rain this year and that has me worried for the long term. The tapas culture isn't as strong in Valencia but we do have a lot of variety of restaurants, which I enjoy very much. Thank you for another educational video and for sharing detailed information about the current state of affairs in Spain.
My only concern when it comes to "Climate Change" is how each of these westerns countries will use that to leverage more taxes, control of the people and overall make your life 10x more miserable than it already is.
Hey! Spaniard here. Love your channel, I just enjoy watching spain through a non-spanish eyes and I think your analysis is soooo good. Keep up with these amazing videos. Lots of love!
Fantastic video! Although you are both in alignment with your opinions, you approach it differently because of your origins...It's great to catch the viewpoints of both a native and an immigrant. I've been traveling to Spain for nearly 20 years and it's been educational to see the political changes (the fall of ETA, the rise of Catalunyan independence, etc.) as Spain is now 3 generations away from Franco. As you said, most have distant (most likely) classroom memories of those times. When it comes to climate, I feel many people's sensitivities are driven more by the media and politics than any actual change in climate. My first visit to Madrid in 2006 featured daily July temperatures as high as 45C and I've found that typical every trip since. Some years were a little cooler. Most don't realize that central Spain is literally 500 miles north of the Sahara Desert. While the Basque region can get snow in the Winter months, typically on a 5-year cycle. Which aligns with La Niña/El Niño patterns. It is sad to see the decline of the tapas bars, they are such an integral part of the "experiencia Española" it would be a shame to lose that. You've got a superb channel...I'm proud to have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.
I was waiting for this video and thank you for sharing your thoughts. Very interesting to hear from people on the groung rather than biased media or political figures.
Thanks you two, it's much appreciated! I have lived here now for a year and a half and I learn a lot from your videos. Please keep up the good work and yes, you guys are a lot of fun together.
9:23 my dad is one of them! Moved to Brasil! Made me Spanish citizen when I was born, and here I am now 🤓 after living in USA, Canada, and now Spain! 💃🏻
Thanks a lot Yoly and James for this great and very interesting video. Its really interesting to learn your way of thinking about politics, the recent elections, womens rights etc. This format is great, please keep it up.
I’m really enjoying these videos on a variety of Spanish subjects. It gives me an insight into live in Spain, a country I love to visit and would love to understand. Thanks to both of you.
Why do you call Vox far right politics but stay quiet about the radicalism of Podemos left wing politics. Anything that sounds conservative is called far right but nothing is ever said about the left and their woke politics. Why?
Pubs in the U.K are closing at a frightening rate . When I was a young man I went out on an almost nightly basis (I am 62 yrs old now). Youngsters nowadays seem to socialize on the internet , the time's they are a changing 🥺
yes mate, 60 this year and my town of Crewe has become a complete ghost town unless you want a haircut, your nails done, something from a £1 shop or a kebab. When I left school my pub crawl was 8 pubs on just 1 road and we had many more roads with the same amount of pubs on them. Now I don't go out local I get on a train and go to Liverpool. Sad sad times.
and kids dont go out much either..when I was a kid if you found anything with wheels on it you took it home and made a kart with it and found the steepest hill to ride it down. They would look at that now as boring while they sit in their bedroom on a playstation. At 16 I could fix things on a Yamaha FS1E and clean it, I wonder if any of that age now can change the fuse in a plug lol.
That’s because life is expensive now mate. I’m not in the UK but in Australia. I’m working as a doctor in our version of the NHS and can barely make ends meet, a house costs on average 1.75 million in Sydney and even a cheap apartment is 1 million. Our generation doesn’t have the spare cash to go out and socialise. So much so that I even gave up alcohol alltogether, as have many of my friends. But we’ve been called entitled by the older generations.
we don't have money. The old doesn't understand that life is much more expensive today and just think we're lazy although we work more and earn less today. So sad
Over the years I've noticed more and more greenery in Madrid being cut down/cleared to make way for paved landscaping ( not shade providing by the way) which is a shame.
What you say is not true, Madrid is greener every day. Parks and green areas are built non-stop in all its neighborhoods. In fact, it's one of the cities with the most per capita green surface and the city with more trees in alignment in its streets of the entire planet.
@@rsnankivell1962 we have had neighborhood meetings regarding this and my friends in Lavapies have too. Yes, Madrid has lots of green spaces but in many barrios they are cutting a lot down as well.
The population of Spain is expected to decline by a 30% by the end of this century. This couple are a perfect example. Only one child is 1.0 birth rate while 2.2 is required to maintain a population.
As a young American still in college, I hope to start a family in Spain by the end of the decade. It's true that the world is continuing to change and we just need to adapt. I see the hustle culture all around me in the US and I want to get away from that for a more balanced lifestyle in Spain, hopefully by finding a remote job. Saludos a todos 👋🇵🇷🇪🇸
Yes, the world is changing to much to fast. As a American, born in 🇵🇷 and living in 🇺🇸 and now establishing in 🇪🇸, I think there are some many things I like about Spain. You have time to do some homework. For what I know, taxes in Spain are really high and it gets complicated when you are 🇺🇸 citizen and working from Spain.
@I-SelfLordAndMaster I'll be studying abroad in Valencia in September so I'll rely on my experience for those 3 months. As for laziness, the last thing I want is to be a shut-in in a country that has so much to offer in terms of its culture and notable locations. That's not happening lol
@WestShoreMan I'm looking at Spain as an option for my mom to retire in as well. Sadly mortgage prices and utilities will be practically impossible for her to afford in where we live after retirement. So far an apartment outside the Valencian city center suits her best but we'll keep looking 👍
So glad to see Yoly back! I appreciate this format. We are moving to Spain because of the political realities of the US, specifically issues of LGBTQ equality. I found your channel when I wanted to learn more about Spanish culture, but culture is far more than food, apartment/neighborhood life, and how loud people talk. Politics IS culture, and I am afraid in making a mistake with our move. Our visa was approved on the day of the general elections. I watched election return coverage all day, afraid that Vox would make our pending move moot. I'm so glad to see that their numbers (and hopefully their influence) went down. Please keep making these videos. If subscribers don't want to watch them, they can skip to the next one.
I agree. We are planning our move to Spain in 2025. Politics is not a sub topic in the life of any country - it needs to be at the front. We are leaving because of US politics esp recently in regards to LGBTQ rights. How can someone move to a country and assimilate if the political culture is oppressive? Love your videos - always have. Yoli and you compliment each other well.
Thank you for talking about these issues! It’s very difficult to find anyone talking so comfortably about issues like feminism in Spain. For my wife & me, this is a deciding factor as we look at where to retire in the next 5 years. In our experience, if women aren’t doing well in a culture, no one else will be, either. The two of you work well together. Please, more like this! ❤👍
Good to see you both on the show and interesting perspectives on the changes which I think the whole world is going through since the first decade of this century. Can’t say there is anything that is surprising as it is happening across the world. Who the influencers are influencing this change is clear from the major players on the world stage and they have been doing so since the 1900. I love the format. Thanks.
Love this format and really appreciate your smart, quick overview of important current developments in Spain. Highlighting Spain’s long standing fracture lines helps us better understand the culture when traveling. Thanks for the insights!
Great video! I definitely agree with all the points! As for the tapas, i think it's definitely good to have more variety in food, nowadays as you said we have a vast immigration and its sad that its still difficult to find more food variety! I agree thats slowly changing and i just hope tapas bars will simply evolve!
I mowed from Sweden to Barcelona 2012. And of course i vote for VOX experienced the shitty social demokrats in Sweden. Re heat waves no problem here in Barcelona. When i had a house in Marbella , i sold it 2007 after more than 30 years there. We had summertime 42-44 degrees daytime and up to + 36/37 degrees night time. Not a big problem for me , and this was during the 80ties. In my opinion vinter is getting colder every year here in Spain . But i will stay in Barcelona use it as my base ,love it. And travelling around in Spain
The fact that people still vote for either the socialdemokraterna or Moderaterna is something I find baffling, greetings from a fellow Swede thinking of leaving the clown party called Sweden.
I think the format with Yoli, and the content also was very good. I would love to hear your commentary about the leaders elected in the upcoming election. Thanks for all your great skills and knowledge that you share with us!!
Hi there in Spain. Im here in Alberta Canada. I find your posts very interesting especially now since the pandemic. The changes you describe are very much the same here. We are used to having cold winters and nice warm but not too warm summers, we now get very hot summers (at times) and cold cold winters. It's more extreme. Our politics sound very similar as well. It's all very interesting. Thanks guys, have a great holiday!
Yes, I like the format and I always enjoy seeing you and Yoli together. Politically speaking we need balance, far extremes imho are to be avoided. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. I don't know if it's within the boundaries of this channel, but as a new resident to Spain, I would love to get some info on financial issues like real estate investment, the day-to-day mechanics of how to conduct yourself financially in Spain, maybe a video on the love-hate relationship Spaniards have with the English language, how to meet new local friends, especially later in life, etc. But I'd totally understand if that's just not your deal.
As someone who will be retiring in Spain (from Canada) Oct 1/23, I would be interested in all of those topics as well. You hear so many scary things about the lack of regulation among real estate professionals, lack of consistency in renting from landlords, and stories about crazy high bank fees. All are concerns as a new resident.
I've noticed any leftist who sees a political opinion to the right of their own is quick to label it "far-right." Conversely, you don't see the term "far-left" used much at all.
That’s because far left means communist and they wouldn’t want us to know who they truly are, now, would they? In reality the right is simply right and the left is far left.
Absolutely loved this discussion. Would also like to hear more about the problems of small towns and villages - something many western democracies are experiencing.
Hola desde Malta 🤩 Nice seeing you again together guys. Very similar situation we are going through ourselves on the island ........ times of change for all of us🤩😎
Thank you for all your content!.. I have followed you for quite some time and the one topic I would love to hear about from you is art in Spain… we know about the amazing great artist Spain has produced in the past, but how about the new artists that are alive and we don’t know about yet? Thank you again and I love the dynamic of having you both on the videos 😊
Thanks for this James and Yoli! I love when you do videos together and hearing Yoli’s take as a woman. And I appreciate your take on the recent election and political climate. Don’t listen to the haters!
14:38 sorry James and Yoli, my father left Spain, he is from Barcelona, my grandfather suffered a lot and my father still has memories of that time, and he votes right, sorry to also not agree with the “far” right. There is no “FAR” right nowadays. And excuse me but what’s wrong about being a stay home mom? We want to have kids but then when life starts changing and the work that comes with being a parent we throw out babies on daycares and babysitters because we choose our careers over our time with our babies? Nothing wrong with that, just like nothing wrong with the SAHM - I decided, I opted for that and for almost 5 years I was a full Time a stay at home mom and I miss that every single day. I am back to work since 2020 and proudly say that my kids never used daycare, it’s my pleasure to stay with them as much as possible, as much as I can, and I respect different decisions, because I respect the right of each family, of each woman. But I am sick and tired of seeing women criticizing moms that decided to raise their kids and take care of the house full time? That’s not equity, that’s not love and far from from respect, and that’s why I am obviously not a feminist. Because I don’t believe that we can fix a mistake creating a new mistake. I personally do not like that kind of video, exposing political ideias is not a good idea when you assume that every one thinks the same way! Spain has a lot to explore and there are tons of pod casts out there for exposure of political ideas. + what kind of political party is in the US now, and US is massively moving to Spain, why?? 🧐 I left Brasil to Canada, and after 8 years of seeing that country going down hill I am here, why? Massive immigration from Venezuela, Why? 🧐 After living in 4 different countries I can tell: There is no perfect country, the world has changed and is ever changing, people have different opinions. We live in a democracy, and different opinions being heard should make us proud, and not a topic for criticism. We all want opportunities, we all want a safe place to raise our kids, we all want peace, Respect, good schools, we all like a clean environment, but we all have different views on how to get there. That’s my respectful opinion.
Great job in covering serious subjects in an unbiased way, thank you for information not easy to find anywhere else. Nice chemistry between the 2 of you :-)
Love this format. I came across your channel last month, and have been catching up in a fairly random manner since. Maybe politics isn't for everyone but the attitudes that underlie it are fascinating to me. Oh and thanks Brexit you've managed to keep at least two families apart😢

Excellent vlog! It’s astounding how little, if anything, Americans (or many other foreigners, know about historic or contemporary Spain. You are doing a great service by enriching their knowledge. Thank you!

ive booked in malaga for 9 days from 24 august -will there still be a heatwave
Be nice to Yoli: you are a parent too! Acknowledge that both your lives have changed by becoming parents! (Believe me, been there, done that!)
Agreed. People need to stop talking about how great the northern regions and the Canaries are.
Hmmm...
I really want to visit the Basque area. The language is really interesting. Their provincial flag looks like a discolored Union Jack.
Imagine what would a couple of young immigrants who move to Spain today would say about the country 30 or 40 years from now…
And oh by the way, tapas was never a healthy way of eating; so no wonder the younger generations have dropped them from their priorities 😊
Tapas were great and healthy. The food in the US is FUBAR
Sevilla had nice Tapas bars. Traditional...with comedy thrown in.
If tapas are not healthy what are American fast food franchises all over Spain, healthy?
Sad to hear about the decline in mom & pops and the increase in franchises. I hate this about the restaurant industry in the US.
The francises rise because of good ideas. The spread of good ideas is at the foundation of franchises.
That is The Great Reset.
Thank you
Please share some of these mamá y papá establishments to make sure they will survive. The more people visiting them..... Gracias!
@gomezalic8515 A favorite place for us, Bar Casa Matas in Benalmádena close to Malaga. Mostly local residents in there, but they welcome all. A daily menu of the day, reasonably priced, great meal, delicious homemade soups.
Tell us how you moved there as permanent what are the steps
@msvideotime Moved for a Non- Lucrative Visa (NLV) documents sent to the SF Spanish embassy. All required documents were translated into Spanish. We were required to show income, medical cert., letter of intent, and application docs. Our process took 30-45 days during 2021 COVID-19
Es mejor cuando los dos están juntos. Tus perspectivas mescladas son fascinantes. Tengan coraje! Estas temas valen más que esas de la mayoria de otros videos de España, por ejemplo, comidas y playas, comidas y playas. Saludos de Nueva Zelanda :)
I like them together but only James works very well too.

The pandemic change everything, and not necessarily for the better.
Fabulous video. So interesting. LOVE this format with both of you talking about real issues in Spain . Please keep it up…you’re doing GREAT!
I've lived in the USA since 1988, I'm gonna retire in 5 years and was hoping to retire in Spain.
I hope Spain stays Spain 🇪🇸 by the time I want to move there. Love your videos.
Check the taxes you need to pay if you have money before you move there.
You'll find a changed country, the country you remember doesn' exist anymore, you'll be a stranger in your own country.
@@felikesmeerssen3263 that happens to any person who has been away from their country for more than a decade. Our world is in constant movement thus changes are inevitable
My wife is from spain. And we are hoping to also retire in spain at least a few months a year. Learn spanish, that is my best advice.
!!@ricky8alta!! I´m spanish and i can see here that there are may crazy people, Spain is Spain and will be Spain in the next future, Welcome at any time,, best regards from Malaga!!
Love this format and having Yoli back. Her perspective and the interplay between you both is great!
Yeah, Spain, Europe in general is changing. We are becoming more Americanised by the day. The world has changed through the plandemic a lot.
Don’t expect lot of changes in politics in Europe , most of the Western countries are Woke politics.
Politics have changed as the media have changed. And by the media I mean the inruption of the internet and the change in the sources of funding from traditional media. We will take time to adapt but we will end up finding ways to inform ourselves in an impartial way, like this channel!
@@dfrank2044 what does it mean to be woke? I keep hearing this but nobody can seem to define it. It sounds like it's a made up buzzword.
If so, count me in!
ha! that would be an amzing visa
Una perspectiva íntima e interesante ¡Yoli, por fin apareces! 🎉 Este formato es perfecto Gracias
Correction "far left natives perspectives"
I'd stay away from Spanish autonomous regions with active separatist movements like Cataluña and Euskadi. Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias are a much safer bet.

Im very glad Spain is moving forward.
thanks for all of the info. Looks like Spain is on my horizon due to a relatively new relationship, so it's nice to hear different perspectives and how the country has evolved over the years.
16%?!? Poor Spain. They need to figure out a way to stop that immediately .
Welcome back Yoli. Great to see you and James discussing life in Spain Love the hair cut you look amazing.
Depends on where do you live
Or stay young
The only thing anyone ever mentions as a net positive for mass immigration is "we have more food options" 😂
and they never talk about countries like france that are on the brink of loosing their culture .
What a shame. I love Fuengirola.
This was EXCEPTIONAL! Please keep posting about all of this. I’m planning to move to Spain and would love to know more. All the best! Rob
However, one topic which is hmm super complicated is spanish politics, if you could make videos on the future of spain from spanish politics to understand it better from expats point of view just an overview for example, its super difficult to follow the news lately.
this guy is a liberal clown. Why would you want his horrible take on politics?
Thanks for the Spain update. One reads about these subjects in the news media, but listening to personal experience adds dimension.
Great video! Interesting and timely topics. Great to see you, Yoly! Thank you both!
Yoly - 'I can't cope with busy tapas bars'
James - 'Who are you and what have you done with Yoly'
Great format for info sessions, say quarterly.
This is a great idea.
I agree!
First, let me say I love Yoly's new hairstyle!! ADORABLE!!!!! Beyond that, thank you so much for the political update. I appreciate the information.
Cheers Peter!
So great to see you both guys ❤ the video quality is great! Thank you for this Spanish update
It's not bad technique, but famous places will always be full xD, don't be afraid that in Spain we are used to tourism, there are many possibilities that they speak English, you follow the videos so as not to end up in a tourist trap. prepare a sentence: "una cerveza por favor" "gracias" "cuanto es?" "la cuenta por favor" and with this you go to the end of the world
An excellent overview and the situations have led to what is happening now.
Great format, welcome back Yoli, you two together make it more interesting. 😊
Chemtrails
My only concern when it comes to "Climate Change" is how each of these westerns countries will use that to leverage more taxes, control of the people and overall make your life 10x more miserable than it already is.
Climate change the biggest grift story in the world
Hey! Spaniard here. Love your channel, I just enjoy watching spain through a non-spanish eyes and I think your analysis is soooo good. Keep up with these amazing videos. Lots of love!
We love your videos. Love both inside the apartment chatting format but also really love you showing us more things. I loved the Rioja episode.
This is great content. Keep it up! This just seems very sincere and from the heart.
I love Tapas bar… it’s one of the main reasons why I love Spain… planning a year end vacation to San Sebastián and Bilbao
I was waiting for this video and thank you for sharing your thoughts. Very interesting to hear from people on the groung rather than biased media or political figures.

Why do you call Vox far right politics but stay quiet about the radicalism of Podemos left wing politics.
Anything that sounds conservative is called far right but nothing is ever said about the left and their woke politics. Why?
The deviousness off communists.
If you disagree with the left, you are automatically designated as “Far Right”
Love the format and the views of Spain as it is today in 2023 - a realistic taste for those who do not just want to travel as tourists.
So sad
Also many youngsters are becomming more health conscious and see alcohol as an old person's drug/culture. I have always been like that lol.
Over the years I've noticed more and more greenery in Madrid being cut down/cleared to make way for paved landscaping
( not shade providing by the way) which is a shame.
Exactly and that makes higher temperatures in that city like Phoenix now
In Cordoba the opposite is happening
What you say is not true, Madrid is greener every day. Parks and green areas are built non-stop in all its neighborhoods.
In fact, it's one of the cities with the most per capita green surface and the city with more trees in alignment in its streets of the entire planet.
si, la gente ya se ha quejado de la tala de arboles en Madrid, creo que tomaran medidas para el siguiente proyecto
Great video. Welcome back Yoly!
I lived in Malaga as a kid then back to California but if I was your age again I’d totally move to Spain.
👏🙌 it's totally worth it!
Love this format/ subject matter.Very informative and interesting. Keep up the great work ! Love from Ireland.
Like the format with both of you in the video. I enjoy your perspectives of what is going on in Spain.
as Spanish population become thirld-worldish, women are going to suffer
Great format and good to have Yoly back. Definitely keen to hear more on the social and political changes going on in Spain. Keep up the good work.
Missed this format of videos of you both, glad to see it back!

It wasn’t just Europe where Spaniards moved to! By the thousands they moved to Latin America, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba (prior to 1950s) and Argentina.
Amo este formato! Vivir en españa no es solo comer y visitar pueblitos
Yes Yoly, Vox denies the existence of domestic violence. You're a regular Rhodes scholar.
Yes, I like the format and I always enjoy seeing you and Yoli together. Politically speaking we need balance, far extremes imho are to be avoided. Thanks for sharing.
Another thing I found is the lack of traditional spanish food available when eating out.
Absolutely amazing!! I love this format and discussion approach.
Great video, so much interesting information. You are such a great couple, thank you. We’re visiting in September. Hi from Dunedin, New Zealand.
Absolutely loved this discussion. Would also like to hear more about the problems of small towns and villages - something many western democracies are experiencing.
I live in a small town in Spain
Nice chemistry between the 2 of you :-)
I'll let you slide on the far-right given the Franco era in Spain, but worrying about "feminism in flux"? Almost unforgivable.
Thank you I enjoyed this format. Very interesting to hear your views about Spain.
Love this format. I came across your channel last month, and have been catching up in a fairly random manner since. Maybe politics isn't for everyone but the attitudes that underlie it are fascinating to me. Oh and thanks Brexit you've managed to keep at least two families apart😢
