    “Friendship Train” has only been out for about 2 weeks now. Next week it will make its way into the top 40 at #37 and it will peak at #17 in late December. It will be Gladys Knight and the Pips biggest hit of 1969.
    The “regulars” on board the “Friendship Train” today are: Frank Vanderpuil (0:22), Carl Ratcher (0:54), Cathy Kilborn & Marty Mane (1:14), also Nancy Demelo & Bill Cox (1:00), Rebecca Ladolo & Peter Hewett (1:05), and Lee Allen (3:16).
    …..And in 2 days (Nov 10th) the NET network (now PBS) will premiere a new television show that will teach preschool age children their numbers and letters (among many other things) with the help of Jim Henson’s Muppets. The first episode of “Sesame Street” introduced Bert & Ernie, Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, and (an orange) Oscar the Grouch and was brought to you by the letters W, S and E and by the numbers 2 and 3.
    OTHER CLIPS FROM THIS EPISODE:

    Very iconic song. Gladys Knight in the pips would also perform this song on the very first nationally syndicated episode of Soul Train on October 5th 1971. Thank the Lord for both of these shows.

    WHEW, so much to unpack here!
    Ok, Friendship Train is one of the best "message" songs to come from Motown, plus Gladys & The Pips ROCKS this song!!! You can tell the kids love it cuz the energy level in the room is really high & strong. Everyone is quite engaged, which lets you know this song was gonna be huge for Gladys & family.
    Now the set: fully immersed into the "groovy" set, I love how there's this slight darkness in the room to give this segment more of a club/house party feel to it! Very affective! Also, I noticed that there are 3 huge circles in the background as to the 2 circles used later on that same season. I LOVED when they used them to show those trippy psychedelic effects during this number, really heightens the atmosphere in there! Man, I wish this was in color! Lol
    Kudos for using the "correct" version of this song for this clip. This is the single mono mix, which I know is on the actual audio of the clip. The stereo album version has The Pips doing a "choo choo whoo whoo" during the intro, which proves they mainly used 45s on these shows.
    There's no ABs visible, but I know they're there. I'm also realizing that the slit in the A, as we all know, was always there on Dick's podium, but not on the actual signs & Rate-A-Record desk until the '74-'78 set, interesting.
    LOVE this clip Aaron, glad you now know this song. It's a slightly forgotten classic, but so hot!

      Wow Kevin -- always the keen observer. It was just about this time that production began experimenting with chroma key. In Bandstand's case, it was "blue" sensitive. Hence, the ability to embellish the circles with whatever desired effects might be. When first anticipated, we dancers' invitations alerted us to blue-screen chromakey and the invitations specifically told us NOT TO WEAR ANYTHING BLUE. Of the many saved invitations, that is one I wish I still had.

      @dancerdon9175 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@thruthealcove Hey Kevin I can't remember why I was m.i.a. -- could have been taking an "extended lunch break" (lol), left the taping early that day, or who knows what? Also noticeably missing are Pat Dickinson, Robin Miller, Art and Rudy Mikaelian. Karen, Roni and the rest of the long-time regulars. But I'm digging the keen attention to detail that you and Aaron comment on -- from set design to the playlists on each episode. In this episode the chroma key effects are in your face, so to speak. Dancers could only see the effects if we looked at the monitors so this episode was a real treat revisiting the novel technology and numerous revisions to the '69-'74 set.

    3:13-3:34 After AB was reboot in 1969, they used full use of special effects whenever possible as with the case with this song and another one used previously in a earlier episode while "I Can't Get Next To You" by the Temptations was played. This would continue in later ways through the reminder of the run.
