I was at this game as an 18 year old USC freshman. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect season. Many college football historians regard this ‘79 team as one of the greatest of all time. 2 Heisman winners, over 40 NFL draft picks, All-Americans, NFL Hall of Famers all up and down the roster. ✌🏼

I was a senior at USC during this season. We sure looked like a repeat for the national championship until this game. It started looking it was going to be a blow out win. It turned out to be the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season and it cost the Trojans the national championship.

The next week was another thriller for USC...edging Cal 17-14 when Hipp finally made a long kick. I'd love to see that game on here!

PHENOMENAL. Thank you so much for posting this. I'm a Stanford fan. I've heard about this game my whole life.

Had Arkansas handled Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, with the USC Trojans defeating Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, the Trojans could have been National Champions again in 1979. But what I have mention was without a doubt "Easier said than done" with the Crimson Tide already up 17-3 at Halftime. The Razorbacks never threatened Alabama in the Second Half of the Sugar Bowl.

RIP Turk Schonert. He should be given credit for staying behind to compete with John Elway at QB. Other Stanford QBs transferred out after the 1st week of practice after seeing Elway.

The game that cost the USC Trojans the 1979 National Championship!

That 1979 USC team was the most talented team in college football history. The only team that can even be mentioned in the same breath with them is the 2001 Miami team. I am getting to be an old man now.....but this game ended in a tie and no loss ever hurt worse than this tie.

Maybe you missed the 80s Oklahoma, Miami, and FSU teams?

@@MeIn321 No I didn't miss them. I do know that 79 USC team had 12 NFL #1 picks....four of which ended up in the NFL Hall of Fame. 2 Heisman Trophy winners the Lombardi Trophy winner and 5 guys in the College football Hall of Fame including the Head Coach.

First time seeing the game film. Listened to on the radio. We were in field goal range before Schonert was sacked. On Naber's attempt, the snap looked high, and there also appeared to be bad footing. The kick was low, and barely made it to the front of the end zone. The lost yardage on the sack, it turns out, were probably irrelevant.

First game i ever attended..went with dad who went to sc in the early 60s.ber .we took a nap on the carsinal .and botched the game winner.easy field goal....
This tie cost SC a cetain national titls......props to stanford they played above themselves that day.....SC historically SC teams have a game or two where they play beneath themselves..take a unranked opponet lightly and get a scare or sonetimes a loss...this has even in years where the team is seemingly unbeatable or just taking it top squads..anyways I was 7;years old and #42 was my new super hero surpassing luke Skywalker and spiderman

Not ABC. This was USC's local, tape-delayed telecast.

you're right. I think it was that yellow font that threw me off. ABC always had that yellow font for there text graphics. It's easy for an old tape trader to remember that font because it always has color bleeding issues.

I just don't understand how, up 21-0 at one point of the game, the USC Trojans finished this game in a tie.

You have to remember these were college kids 19, 20, 21, 22 years old they probably were thinking at half time about partying and all the beautiful SC women that we're going to get with that night😅

Perhaps Coach Robinson should have kept those kids focused until the clock read 0:00 in the 4th Quarter. If I was Coach, after the first Stanford Touchdown, I would have been worried. I would immediately change it up on Offense!

Game was fixed. No way Stanford was that good even on this "given Saturday". McDonald looked like a high school QB just on this game. And vs Arizona St in the desert in '78.
