Mu vanavanemad olid põgenikud, ning tulid siia Kanadasse et anda mu vanematele ja mulle paremat elu, ja ma olen väga tänulik sellest- siin on hea elada. Ma olen alati tundnud et midagi puudub, aga. I've just started reading up on the Singing Revolution, and after looking up the lyrics of this song and seeing the emotion on the faces of the people here, and how young some of them are, I can say without a doubt that this is the most i've ever been moved by national pride. It really makes me reflect on how much I take my freedom for granted.

I do kind of understand (my husband is estonian) and I m still crying.
In tears again. What they seem to have and express is lost in America-perhaps not irretrievably but for now-lost. the lyrics (found on the internet) display a profound love of place, an amazing statement of concern that justice is not being given to all, a confession of how difficult it is living in a country of long winter dark and long summer days, and amazement of their own inner strength and a loving commitment to living in Estonia (a disbelief that one could ever want to be somewhere else). Lovely beyond words. The power of the human voice in concert is just about too much for the heart to bear sometimes.

Like frankieparley, I didn't understand the language but I comprehend the emotion. A beautiful and powerful song... It reduced me to tears when I first heard it (whisky imbibed, admittedly). But what a song! Long live Estonia!!
From the emotion of the song and judging by the EN version of lyrics here, I would say that Lithuanians and Latvians can understand and appreciate this song very well.

Mõtlesin erinevate Eesti isamaaliste laulude peale ja tegin tähelepaneku eestlaste suhtumise kohta oma isamaasse. Kui ameeriklaste 4 juuli pidustusi vaadata, siis (minu arvates) suhtuvad nemad oma kodumaasse kui oma sõpra. Parimasse sõpra. Ja see on väga kena. Aga kui ma kuulan meie vanu häid laule "Mu isamaa on minu arm", "Eesti muld ja Eesti süda" ja "Ilus oled, isamaa", siis tekib mul tunne, et eestlased suhtuvad oma isamaasse kui armsamasse. Ja see on veel kenam.

I was there on Sunday when this song was performed, the choir alone, and this second time with the singer/songwriter...all I can say is, even without a translation, the performance was beyond description...my mother, Uncle, and Grandparents fled the occupation, eventually settling in the US. As a non-Estonian speaker I had some concerns about the Song Festival.

Hetkel olen Kanadas aastaks ajaks vahetus6pilasena. Paar minutit tagasi m6tlesin, et kuulaksin veidike koorilaulu ja p2he tuli just see laul. Nyyd on mul silmas pisarad ja n2en Eestit t2iesti uues valguses. T2is v2ge ja tahet. Ma ei ole varem olnud uhkem eestlaseks olemisest. +eksiarvamus I have to say, "rusty is the heartless bosom of shame" ("on roostes häbi südameta rind") is one of the most powerful lines I have ever heard, both in English and in Estonian.

No, it was written in 1998 for the 140 year anniversary of Mahtra war(for a play about the war); a clash between Estonian serfs and German noblemen
Writing something like this in the Soviet Union would have probably gotten you into some deeeeeep trouble, but the song does apply to basically all of the Estonian history

@kassikangas Tegelt kirjutas Volkonski selle "Mahtra sõja" lavastusele. Mahtra sõda oli aastal 1858. Vene okupatsioon oli tehniliselt 20. sajandil, enne oli lihtsalt meie mõistes Vene aeg. Toimus suur venestamine ja püsimajäämine tundus võimatu. Toda aega sümboliseerib see laul veel eriti hästi, aga kes tahab, näeb seda rääkimas ka tänapäevase vaba Eesti kohta.
