The Citroen Ami Buggy: Pointless or Perfect?!

- This week Imogen ventured to the south coast to try out the tiny, bizarre, buggy version of the Citroen Ami. Having sold out in a little over 2 minutes(?!!!) customers apparently LOVE this modest electric vehicle and are crying out for more MyAmi Buggies to hit our streets. However, with a top speed of 28mph and no doors we wanted to understand what all the fuss is about... Imogen investigates!

The BIG Question - What would you use this for??!
Duh. Its a vehicle. you use it to transport people and stuff.
To the shops and back, our nearest shops are 6km away. 😊
Could be good for a campus security vehicle.
Except you can cycle much faster.. 🤣
@@vfr800ch if you're an Olympic cyclist. 5 miles at 28mph is certainly beyond me.
I overtake even the lycra mob in my Ami.
The spoiler serves a valuable purpose, of indicating which is the back end.
There's a little lip on the back of the standard version. and of course red lights.
And the steering wheel points to the front😂
@@MrKOenigmaa bit of a clue, missed by many.
Actually, its a clever clothes hook.
And more drag and less range, if there's a strong headwind
That's not a spoiler,
It's a carry handle

A flush handle.
The car that 90% of city people actually need.
Exactly. Space saving, zippy for quick errands and no exhaust emissions.
Cool story 😂
@@shilland123 What? Do you disagree? Why? Because you "need" a huge SUV in the middle of town for in-city driving? Don't even start with that nonsense.
European cities, with their narrow streets and tight parking, yes. American cities require cars with full freeway speed capability unfortunately - work, shopping and schools are usually many miles apart.
The thing is, this is probably good for 80% or maybe even 90% of the trips, but, once a week the wife and husband go out together and lug their kid with them, and now we need a monster truck
"cant drive like a maniac" - "only fit in one passenger" my 16 year old inner self stood up CHALLENGE ACCEPTED 😄
Yes, you can drive it like a maniac, a 16yr old toppled on on the Monarco GP hairpin. But you need to try very hard.
You just need to find a hill that's steep enough 😊
@jamespaul2587 Yes in the first 4 miles after a full charge it'll go downhil quite fast, then regen kicks in and limits it to 29mph
@ziggarillo interesting, I guess for those crazy downhill speeds you need to deplete the battery a bit
@@jamespaul2587No, you have to keep charging it from 90 to 100 %
I'm seriously dying at that cable moment - i cant imagine the look the sound op was giving you at that moment and i do not blame you one bit for letting them do it
Answer - because it's a quadricycle, not a car, and when you lose your license in France (say, for drink-driving), you're still legally allowed to drive a quadricycle.
Yup. I'm so fed up with people claiming it's a car. The entire point is its a new(ish) category of vehicle to grow a new market that's better than both mopeds and cars. Same with the Microlino, Ark Zero, and a bunch of others. The L6e like the Ami are a little feeble, but the L7e ones are much more capable and both categories are supremely useful. But we wouldn't call a self balancing board with wheels a hoverboard, so we shouldn't call this a car.
@@jonevansauthor This category of motor vehicles has existed for decades in France. Citroen are electrifying that segment.
@Musketeer009 but doesn't exist in UK
@@phillipbray8647 except it does still exist here. Which is why you can buy them. It's all over .gov if you wish to verify.
@@Musketeer009 not really. Because it was EU legislation, not French, Citroen weren't the first to make a modern quadricycle as far as I can tell. The Renault Twizy is one for instance. The literal point of doing it was to make a new category of vehicles one up from mopeds, and one down from cars, that could serve most journeys for most people. Citroen and Renault deserve zero credit for this but if we were going to back slap anyone for electrifying them, it'd probably be Renault.
Ford created the first one in 1896 although that wasn't electric, he did coin the term.
I work with someone who owns an Ami (the normal version) and he and everyone else loves it. It is practical, very economical (he reckons it pays for itself with the fuel he doesn't put in his petrol car), and characterful. One thing we've all noticed though, as we get stuck behind him on the hill up to our place of work, is that it isn't speed limited by a software limiter, it is purely by its lack of power. It does 13mph on that long hill and there is no chance to safely overtake! We still have to smile though, you can't not like it.
They should add pedals for the hills. Oh wait, that's an ebike.
They already do a doored version, but for this model I guess you gotta keep warm the same way motorcyclists keep warm, ie coats and jackets
@@DanielSultana I suppose the doored version costs with at least 1000 euros more. Even if the car has doors if there is freezing I really doubt the small battery inside can heat the car, so, even with doors one would still need coats and jackets.
@@orionbetelgeuse1937 I'm from Malta, I was not thinking freezing temperatures, guess it's not really meant for northern countries
@@DanielSultana of course not. For Tropical regions is good even without doors. It's like a lego car. For sunny areas they could put a solar panel on the roof.
I totally get it. I don't *understand* it - I can't explain it. But I get it. I want one. I have no use for it, and nowhere to park it, but, I want one. :)
Mine is great fun, and a couple of times a week Octopus Energy actually pays me to charge it.
Citroen used to be great at this. Boldly building cars nobody else would dare
Really good to see Citroën sticking to their plans and building the buggy version, just sad to see that they've lost some of the cooler elements that the protoype had such as the LED light bar, bull bars and chunky wheels 😕
Those will probably be options.
@@Musketeer009 hopefully 😀🤞
People say this as if you can't change cars yourself.
The thing is, this isn't a plan.
It's a media exercise.
The Ami is due for some serious improvement or it's going to be all not not
I love the simplicity of using a mobile phone as the av system for the car. I'd love a regular powered ev with just bare bones like this. I don't need to go 0-60 in 4 seconds... I just want to go a bit further than my current 80 mile range car and I really don't need all the power gadgets weighing down the car and taking away the energy. Hopefully the first of many in this direction. and I know I'm just dreaming... but maybe even in the US. A guy can dream.
E-UP and it's sister cars don't have a screen they have phone holder and an app
So much this - An MG4 type vehicle with the simplicity of the build of this would be amazing, just nothing to go wrong or obsolete. I reckon it will probably come from India
@@ronaldusher39 my thoughts precisely -- and interestingly, VW had killed the E-UP and had to reconsider!

@@Strividia Yep was thinking of that one, really hope Citroen go ahead with it, even keeping the prototype styling.
Annoying EU/UK has access to all these incredible tiny electric cars and none of them are sold in the US. I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
I love these little cars, they are amazing and I feel like they should be huge in the car renting services, especially for turism since they would allow someone to get a car to drive around the city they are visiting for a reasonable price.

I'm living the Scotland Ami life at the moment, it's been a great little commute tool. Under half the price of the train to work, underhalf the time sink of the bus AND on my own exact (utterly chaotic) schedule. I stick to the back roads, and keep neatly to the left, and anyone in a smaller car than an Audi Q5 or literally any size of van can obertake with no problems at all. And to those people commuting down countryside back roads in large SUVs? Maybe buy more sensible cars.
Absolutely
More Imogen please, she is hilarious and fits the channel perfectly.
There’s a city Ami that drives around by us and it puts a smile on my face every time I see it.
I'm seeing this variant of the Ami as Citroën's modern take on the Moke.
Absolutely, but the moke was a car.
Mehari? 😀
@@metrikmechanikyes, one of my all time favourites.
But there is a new electric Moke. Not that I'd want it any more than the Ami. I think it does at least have it's steering wheel on the correct side of the car, something Renault are incapable of doing.
@@jonevansauthor Not Citroën's (sic!) fault that you're not driving on the correct side of the road 😜
I just like the fact that it’s Dungeness. If there’s many of these things there, it’ll be Bladerunner by the seaside.
A greatly odd vehicle for a greatly odd place. I always visit when I’m back that way.
Hi Imogen. Love your work 👍
Why does it keep selling out? Because it’s what people want.
our local chippy has one of these and everyone stops to have a look at it. Great fun. I'd love one as a little runabout to the shops and back.
It's the sort of vehicle that would do very well here in southern Thailand as a means of getting to and from the local shops and markets, which can be several kilometres away. Plus it would be more suitable for the narrow roads, rather than the 4x4 and SUVs that are currently used and usually take up 2/3 to 3/4 of the width.
I'd love to see this with a bright red body and a screaming yellow roof. Little Tikes would lose their minds.
Ah, at last , the children's toy fetishism.
I can imagine these tooling around the Sun City retirement communities in California. This isn't a bad thing. Truth be told, I'd rather be zooming around Palm Springs in a Carver in my retirement years. 😈
Yeah, the Carver would be fun somewhere sunny. Although I imagine I'd get cocky and get myself into trouble with it unless it's really idiot proof. The leaning thing looks like you could get it wrong.
I certainly wouldn't want this version of the Ami unless I did live somewhere Mediterranean. You've got to be a bit weird to want to use a doorless vehicle with no roof when it's cold and wet.
@@jonevansauthorit has a roof.
Really fun review, loved the hilarious take on charging! 😂
This would be perfect for anyone that has a summer holiday home by the beach, or on an island. I mean, probably not in the UK (sorry, but you know it's true), but here in NZ or Aus, or in the Mediterranean. The sunroof is so you can put a baguette in the cupholder...
Ha has ... yes, in the UK we'll take the one with doors thank you!
This would easily fit in a university tower block lift during Fresher's Week.
It’s selling well because it’s what everyone wanted all along, a diesel/petrol car for long journeys and a really cheap EV for buzzing around town and the local area which actually makes environment sense but the manufacturers just kept loading more and more batteries to achieve more and more range so they got really heavy and really expensive so nobody can afford them plus the charging infrastructure needed now is getting ridiculous.
In late August I drove from Norway to Moldova through Denmark, Germany, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. 3000km. I did in an EV. Charging infrastructure is getting better every day. I had no problems with charging. A friend drove from Norway to Italy, 8 years ago in a Tesla Model S. Even back then he had no problems with charging.
@@StarfleetCommand71ok, but you do realize that a model S (or even a III) is EXACTLY the kind of giant heavy car that was being mentioned? From 60 to 100KWh battery and eye-watering prices for most.

It's a budget car, but the charge cable situation, the lack of sealing of the doors, the unforgivable wobble of the Bluetooth speaker.. I think the closest atm is the Dacia Spring, in Europe at least. China has plenty of Smart car homages that are vastly superior to Mercedes engineering. Not that that's a high bar. It's absolutely possible to build a real car, and by keeping it simple, get the price down to close to that of an Ami. Import taxes are a problem, but don't worry, I'm sure governments across Europe will recognise the important thing is getting the cheap vehicles, not where they come from, right? Right? *sighs*
I think quadricycles are great, and could be amazing if someone better than Citroen and Microlino was building them for Europe, but none of the legacy companies is smart enough to build the cheap EVs we need in every category from Smart car size, to small four seater, to sedan.
They all think we need things like electric windows and air conditioning and a thousand other unnecessary features that we love to have but don't actually need. Everything is so overbuilt now, the prices are wild and Tesla is the only non-Chinese company building cars competently. Unless or until they produce a genuinely low budget car that's simple, our only hope of being saved is cheap Chinese cars, which aren't likely to make it here anytime soon (as they're probably better off making profit on more expensive models and keeping the cheap ones domestic).
Great fun Imogen - thank you 👏👏
Great presentation. great Fun, appropriate.
Just a shame that legally 16 year olds in the UK can drive will a full AM license (more than just CBT), but no-one will insure them, not even Citroen UK Car Insurance. My son is currently in this position 😢
You can launch a company to provide insurance for ultra high risks if you like.
You won't because it's a bad bet and will go bust, and so will any other company. It's called capitalism.
Judging by the excellent news coverage to be found in the Sun and DT newspapers then nobody will get insurance for battery EVs on account of very costly repairs to battery packs.
Well done those newspapers!
This might mean the end of battery EVs ... owners won't be able to give them away and be forced to pay hundreds of thousands to dispose of them.
Everyone knows that.
Insurance is mad for young people on all vehicles
@t1n4444 that's hilarious
@@t1n4444 Insurance has gone up massively for all cars, whether they are electric or not ..... and it doesn't cost anything to dispose of a battery, as there are plenty of recycle places now who can 100% recycle them ...... but they are having a bit of a struggle getting used EV batteries, as they last so long. ..... There are many Tesla's with batteries that have done over 300,000 miles and still going strong
In every day life, this quadcycle is all one really needs for city dwellers. City travel is usually 5-20 km in length if you know what you'redoing, meaning that you plan your workplace and home dwelling correctly. For instance, a workplace closer to the residence is much more preferred if salary, etc. is not drastically different. There's nood need to run as fast as a typical car, and there's no need to carry loads of equipment around for work. Having said all that, it would be super considerate of Citroen to supply full head-to-foot cover on doors for stormy days 😅.
The "design flaw" with the charge port is theft protection.
As with all property
You see our future people!? 20mph limited and limited distance cars. ie 25 minute cities here we come.
A Microlino makes much more sense than an Ami, far more practical (it does 90 km/h, I even used it on the motorway around the city where the speed is limited to 80 km/h during a test drive) and decent luggage space.
What was the ride like? Would love to see these in 🇬🇧, especially in cities like Bristol (me) which has a lot of Victorian streets & too many full sized vehicles. Jack’s review was great, but was in London.

At this point, fully charged should really review road legal golf carts. I mean, the difference is not that big and they are cheaper and there is a used market.
There are NO road legal golf carts in the UK.
Daft as that might at first appear, by having ordinary cars replaced by road legal golf carts in suburban areas might (!!!) be a cheaper alternative.
Granted the redesign of the road network would not be cheap but the local atmosphere would be a lot healthier and the wear and tear on the physical road surface might be a lot less.
We could certainly take notes from retirement villages ... and even add doors to the "buggies".

Yes, Citroen gave it a go, but they should have given it more go; at least the performance of the Renault Twizy which could do 50mph and had a more practical range. My criticism of the Twizy was that it didn't have any proper doors. Citroen initially provided the doors but skimped on the performance. Now with this buggy version it has denied us the doors as well!
It's really cool, I'd love something as deconstructed as that to drive. But in the rural north of the UK it's just a no go, with little protection from the elements and a dangerously low top speed.

I get the gimmick of using the Miami postcard, and its cute. That said, the lack of doors or protection from rain would ironically make this a horrible choice in Miami where it rains 3" an hour at completely random times of day.

bet it wouldn't be too difficult to modify an old vaccum cable winder.
If you do get a cable recoil fitted, don't try driving off in it when its plugged in. A, the Ami might struggle to clear 5 mph, and B, it could bounce back and damage your garage.
That is tremendous and I think someone was a bit smitten.
4:40 Dutch kids and teens have this freedom but without the need to spend thousands on a quadricycle. It's a big reason why I wouldn't want to bring up kids in this country.
There is definitely a place in the market for small quadricycles. I've been to places like the Canaries where restaurants use Twizys or similar to deliver food and it works fine because it's all local delivery and the scale is small. But this one doesn't deserve to sell out. I've seen videos where owners complain about appalling build quality, gaps, bad welding, bulges in the plastic etc. Considering it is just welded tube metal with plastic panels, it's mind boggling Citroen can't even manage to manufacture them to these undemanding standards.
It's brilliant
They are French. Figures.
Gotta wonder how easy it is for someone to just throw this in a van and steal it like I have seen done to motorbikes…
“You look the part, you don’t have any of the capability… it’s a toy.”
The new Defender lacks a body on frame chassis. Same thing.

It’s kinda dumb and i love it!
How is that possible!!
Kind of standard speed in suburbs in Australia
The main fault with the door model is the screen fogs up. No problem with no doors.
It is an issue, but at least on mine the fan clears the window pretty well, add a bit of heat and there's no problem.

"A hairdryer cable" 💀

3:07 the tethered cable in the door frame is one of the items on my cons list for the Ami.
It works well If you use domestic electricity
@@ziggarillo yes as long as you only ever charge from domestic sockets, there's not much advantage having a type2 input. The only advantage then would be to avoid tucking the cable into a small hole in the frame, but that could be improved with any "dumb" socket, like caravan input sockets.
As soon as the community transitions to EVs, you'll encounter public type2 stations, then the tethered cable becomes a disadvantage,.
On the other hand, if a vehicle has type2 input, it works well to charge from domestic sockets, but without all the possible disadvantages at type2 stations.
The type 2 is just an adaptor. I've only used it once, it worked well.
@@ziggarillo sure the adapter works well in most cases, but some specific situations it won't.
If you go to a destination where they offer charging but a tethered type2 cable, you would need a different kind of adapter.
Using the adapter you introduce the possibility of someone sabotaging your charge, because they can easily unplug the domestic plug, while a type2 would be locked
If the type2 station is part of load sharing or load balance, it is plausible it wants to reduce charging to 6A. The charging station would probably just shut off when the Ami charged at 9A and you don't know about it until you return to realize it didn't change. Depending on the design, the station might need a manual reset by a service technician before anyone could use it again.
Spending time tucking the cable in a tiny hole would feel annoying to me, when I'm used to just unplugging from the car and then leave. If I want to charge from domestic or type2 on the road I have a cable in the car.
I think it's a bad design when you have to spend extra time in the rain with an open door, getting the clothes wetter, and rain into the cabin. Then the "powerful" heater has to handle the added moisture while doing its best defogging the windows.
I totally appreciate that you won't have to deal with the type2 specific problems when you only charge from domestic sockets. However as the community transitions to adapt EVs, public parking gets more type2 stations, and possible load sharing to allow more stations with the same grid connection.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Ami has some fantastic design ideas, but that makes the tiny details more anything.
- I can easily adapt to handle my issues with the charging cable, but they won't stop annoying me.
- the cabin heater/defog isn't that powerful, I would possibly retrofit some combustion heater, or electric heater with an extra auxiliary battery, to cope with the coldest days
- my primary concern against getting an Ami is the lack of a battery heater, and knowing that the few colder weekends during winter, the battery wouldn't charge below -5°C
If someone makes an aftermarket solution for a battery heater, I would seriously consider one.
In addition to a battery heater and auxiliary cabin heater, I would probably at some install a type2 charging input, because that's more convenient wherever I would go.
