  • Though “The Ribbon” was a doomed project for city government, the stretch of concrete blocks along the Embarcadero further cemented San Francisco’s mecca status in the 90’s and beyond.

    Adding to how cool Barbara Stauffacher Solomon is is that she was happy to see people skate it! "'I love it that the skateboarders love it, and Stanley hates it that the skateboarders love it'" In describing why she loves that the skateboarders use the Ribbon she says, simply: "'It's part of the world.'"

    Can't tell you how much I love this series but wish they were longer. The EMB episode alone could have been a feature-length documentary about what is arguably the Mecca of modern skateboarding. Maybe someone someday will make it, but I sure hope Ted will be involved to add his particular insight and knowledge.

    Love this series. Not only does it educate on skate history and architecture, but also points out the mindset and pitfalls of shitty urban planning and design - designing for self interest or vanity and not actually considering the needs of the community and how shared spaces can be used. How about you ask the community what their wants and needs are before jumping head first into a project. Welp, skaters will always find a way to take advantage of shitty urban design.

    • @havenless3551
      @havenless3551 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Less of urban design from an objective perspective and more from a political one. Wealthy individuals view homeless people as sketchy and dirty and don't want them in their public spaces, so using hostile architecture to deter them from using these spaces is seen as a good thing. So it's not shitty design at all, it was specifically designed to do this based on the perspectives of the politicians who gave direction on this, and supposedly the people who elected them. That being said, North American planning and urban design skews heavily towards a progressive/advocacy perspective, so the urban designers/landscape architects who were involved with this would probably disagree with its implementation in the first place

    Love this series and not just for the nostalgia of seeing old skate footage and photos from these legendary spots, but all the background information makes it very interesting. I've noticed a theme in the series: public works projects are when imagination gets pummeled by concrete blocks of reality. I'm not saying they shouldn't be done, but no one tests anything small scale first. They just dump a millions in and then argue whether it was worth it forever.
