  • This is an audiobook performed by Brian. The Horror at Red Hook is a short story by Lovecraft, and shares plenty of similarities with the Cthulhu mythos.
    Enjoy.

I agree with the comments about AI voices. At least as a human you are willing to accept the feedback. You have my sympathies with regard to finding stories that haven't been done to death. The reason that everyone reads them is because they are the good ones. HPL is a mixed blessing. People will give a reading a chance just because it is HPL but some of the less read stories just aren't his best work. I think "The Horror at Read Hook" fits that group. It has some good creepy moments but just doesn't have the power of some of his better known works. The story also reflects some of HPL's personal flaws more than his other works. I say this not as a criticism of the reading but to acknowledge that even with an author who has seen a resurgence in popularity there is a finite quantity of really good work. It would require sifting through a lot of material but there are likely some "one hit wonders" in the old pulp magazines that are now in public domain.

Yeah it is a challenge to find things that I can record without getting copyright strikes.
Lovecraft’s stories have been a mixed bag for me. I thought this one was decent, but not amazing. I thought the Haunter of the Dark was a lot better, and Call of Cthulhu was moderately better (even if it was a lot of buildup for a little payoff).
I’ll probably read Shadow over Innsmouth, because I’ve heard a lot of positives, but I doubt I’ll bother recording it.
Thanks for the listen and the comment!

Stumbled across your account while looking for a lovectaftian style story. I was pleasantly surprised by your narration of the story. I will subscribe and turn on the notifications. Your on the way to becoming a popular narrator.

One small thing - when dealing with foreign words and names, be sure to look up the pronunciations. Arthur Machen is 'MAKH-en'. Lesen (to read) is LAY-zen.

Thank you for the feedback. I definitely should have double checked some of the words. I do try to check pronunciation when I come across an archaic word that I’m not super familiar with, but sometimes I don’t think to do it.
Thanks for the listen and the feedback.

So happy to have found another great HUMAN narrator. Don’t listen to that sour sally below. I hope you stick with it. And now I’m going to give a little unsolicited advice-seek out stories that not every other spooky narrator has covered. That’s the hard part.

I truly do appreciate the kind words.
Finding anything that everyone and their dog hasn’t done is a challenge. I’m always open to suggestions if you have them.
And the person doing it is a huge thing for me as well. I worry that at some point people are just going to accept AI narration for all of this stuff.
Thanks for listening to my audiobook and the subscribe.

@@BooksByBrian-i3q I hear those beastly AI voices and I’m outta there. You might put something like HUMAN NARRATOR in your titles.

Oddly this must be a preference because I hear a delightful oaky timbre with subtle earthy highs and lows in his inflections.
