Hello All, I felt I needed a change after having mid length hair for awhile. Hope this is helpful if you want to try this at home yourself or have a family member help you. As always thanks for tuning in . Blessings, Tanja
OK I’ve watched your Finished Style and it’s FABULOUS!! You did such a fantastic job with the Cut and I just LOVE his you show that it doesn’t come out perfectly even at first cut but not to PANIC just go in a fix I easily!! Looks wonderful on you! ❤️🌹
TIP: Get yourself a 'rat tail' comb and it will make the initial sectioning and cutting so much easier. The 'tail' will help you section, and the smaller teeth on the comb will keep your hair together while you're cutting it. Oh, and get yourself a larger hand held mirror to view the back section.
I was going to say this too. All hairdressers use the tail comb to divide and separate the sections of hair. It's so much easier to get just the right amount of hair in a straight line. I'm not a hairdresser but I'd be lost without my tail comb especially when colouring my own hair when I want to lift up the next section to get to the roots. I was watching because I'm thinking about trimming mine a bit.
We use all purpose combs for cuts not rat tails. Rat tails are more for sectioning foil highlights, braids, and perms. We definitely do not use wide tooth (conditioning) com to cut hair with. Wide teeth combs are not good for cutting at all.
Why doesn't anyone buy an adjustable mirror mounted to the wall in the bathroom and you can pull it out and adjust it to see the back of your head when cutting that way you can use two hands to cut your hair and you can see the whole back of your head without holding another mirror! So much easier that way...that's what I do and it makes doing your hair way more easier...they sell them on wayfair
@@doreenwalden4918 that’s a bit mean. Some people want to learn so they’re not always dependent on others and can save some money. Everything has gotten really expensive in recent years. I enjoy Tanja’s videos. Happy Holidays
I learned a lesson from Covid pandemic. There were no salons open! So I had to trim my own hair. My gosh, I would have paid anything to have a salon cut. So if you can learn to trim your hair that's a good thing. Yes, a wall mirror that's adjustable would be a major help to cut the back!
Because nothing says “Grandma’s bathroom “ more than a mirror nailed to a wall, toilet seat rugs and a toilet paper cover doll that hides an extra roll under her skirt.
The haircut looks really good and suits your face. I have been cutting my own hair too for most of my life. When I was young, I got a few professional cuts but I was traumatized by being given a muffin cut several times by different hairdressers, even though I would bring in a picture of the way cooler short haircut I wanted. My DIY haircut may not be perfect but it always suits my features and I don't have to pay someone a lot of money to give me something I didn't want.
You did an amazing job on your hair. I don’t think I could do so good on my own and I went to college to learn. Not sure if you’re a stylist but amazing either way. It looks so pretty, well done! ❤.
I frequently cut my own hair too & what I do is comb it all down very straight sorta sticking my hair to my neck like you do and then I use a long strip of scotch tape to about when I want the length to be & cut along the bottom of the tape. It usually turns out pretty straight.
I can't thank you enough for this video! I've been trying to cut my own hair for several months and just hope no one is looking too closely! Your explanation and demonstration were perfect! I have the same hair but much grayer. Totally unruly!
Looks really good. I love how she's calm and doesn't freak out like I do when something isn't perfect. Makes me feel calmer about my adventures with doing my own hair.
This is exactly how I want my hair cut. Thank you, I never cut my own hair before, but I will try this hair cut. Btw you did better than some of the hairdresser I used before.
Perfecto! Us older ladies don't like to go to hair cutting places for many reasons. There are several older ladies in my elderly complex who admit to cutting their own hair. It might be a lucrative job opportunity for hairdressers to check with the elderly housing projects for house calls. After receiving a few disastous experiences in salons, I started cutting and applying home permanents to myself. It may not have turned our profession looking but it always satisfied me. Recently I went to a Cost Cutters and once again I received a "strange" haircut. So I'm ready to start chopping it again. I must buy some new scissors, though.
Very nice style on you, looks beautiful. I do the same cut except using the regular rubber bands and section about 8 areas then cut below the rubber bands. It’s easier for me to establish a length that way and then touch up later like you do. I angle the fronts too, it does help. A bit of hair to clean up and if you make a small error especially in the back no one seems to notice & it grows out anyway. I used to cut everyone’s hair using clippers on my son & husband. My hair color is same as yours, it’s natural but friends think I have it highlighted at a salon.
I've been cutting my own hair for most of my life. Because my hair is thin and fine, it takes less than five minutes to give myself the standard blunt cut. I don’t know why you didn’t like the length you had before. I found it suited you very well and made you look younger. Perhaps all it needed was some soft curls or waves to bring some interest to it.
That is EXACTLY how I have been doing my hair, as it is long enough, now. I haven't had a curling iron in years - I need to get one, again, as I just cut, and never think about making it sleek, plus I have thick hair. Thankyou - very nicely done! 💥
I use a thin leather belt as my guide. I hold the two ends in front of my face it can be adjusted high or lower on the neck for length. It works great for me. And no uneven sides.
@@clbellue I then take the thinning scissors and soften the sharp cut. It turns out right every time. The main thing is to get the hair combed down. I take my time with it.
Oh my GOSH I haven’t even finished watching yet but I had to tell you how much you made me laugh with how Seriously you announced in the car “Today we’re going to CUT MY HAIR OFF!” No hesitation at all- good for you! 😂😂 Now I’m going to finish watching! ❤️
I was watching one of your videos the other night, I loved how you styled your hair. Anyway, you gave me inspiration and today my hairdresser gave me the chop and I‘m back to a manageable short bob only mine is all one length without bangs. I‘m really happy about how it turned out so many thanks for nudging me into inspiration 😍
You did a good job! I wondered why you need to flat iron it. Didn't it look fine after blow-drying? But, I guess that's what these tutorials are for. Some of us country bumpkins need some teaching, especially if money is tight. Thank you!
Wow! I learned a lot. My hair is gray and now wavy and flyaway. Since 2020 it’s grown midway down my back a couple times and then I cut it. I want more of a Bob and shorter. The very back is the hardest and always looks like a very long layer is needed but I’m not sure how to cut. Last professional cut was layered and the results were awful. Thank you for showing we can cut our own hair.
I have a blunt cut bob... My son uses his buzzer to cut it all straight across the back and my sides have a tiny angle... He's better than a pro and doesn't take off more than I ask.
I bought an adjustable trifold mirror on Amazon to hang behind me on my closet door & absolutely LOVE it to use when cutting my hair. It was about $20-ish.
Having had a very short pixie cut since 2000, I was ‘forced’ to grow my hair out during the Covid lockdowns and got to a stage where I could plait my hair - which I had never been able to do. But my goodness, it took days to dry (I refuse to use the heat of a hairdryer) I cut my hair to shoulder length after 4 1/2 years without a cut. May take another couple of inches off and do the wolf/butterfly (whatever it’s called) to have some layers that seem a bit more forgiving while I’m getting confidence in cutting my own hair.
I agree with someone else here. Invest just a small amount of money on a wall mounted mirror that can be pulled out so you free up your hand. Get a small toothed comb.
Just a licensed cosmetologist opinion….i think it makes you look younger and shortens your facial structure with more fullness …like the round brush blow dry fullness. With us older ladies, with our faces starting to drop down, pulling the front sides so straight and flat pulls the appearance of your face down more. Just an opinion…All in all, good job…
Love your video! Have been watching cutting videos and yours is a little bit different which I liked. Some of them have the 3 rubber band method. I I tried that last night, but got confused and didn’t finish my haircut. So I’ve got to finish it but don’t want to have to pay someone to clean it up. I may try doing that myself. Anyway you have inspired me to clean it up.
You have a lot of patience. I'm losing hair on the top but the back toward the neck is so thick that in order for a bob to work, I have to undercut, or else it looks terrible. For the basic line, I just wet the hair, part in the middle, section off the sides, and then cut the entire back, at the bottom. Then, in the back, I do one vertical section about at the curve of the head, pinning up the hair above that line. Then using a men's beard trimmer with a guard, I undercut downward. Then cut the sides longer at an angle. After blow drying I use a straightening iron and 4 rollers. When all done, the hair then curls under as it should. My hair texture is also changing with age, becoming less sleek and more frizzy, the top and front.
Wow brave lady. I think I could get away with having a go at that now my hair's got thinner. I definitely wouldn't have had the confidence to do it when my hair was super thick.
When by arms could still reach back like that, I cut my own hair for years. I would put a piece of tape on the hair over the nape to hold it in place and cut an even line.
I was hoping to see you choosing new glasses (as you mentioned at the beginning), because you have a similar face shape to mine, and I find it SO hard to find glasses to suit me. Did you do a separate video on that?
I love it! I've been looking for a new hairstyle and might try it. What type of Scissors are you using? I'm very afraid that it won't be near even. Thanks for posting this!
It looks great ... she needs to comb her hair every single time right from the top of her head .. she was only combing it at the bottom .. it can bunch up at the top, then when she finishes it and combs from the very top, it can be uneven .. A job very well done ... it does look very flattering 🌹
So true , hair previously straight , now with white gray hair , if I were to air dry, I have a loos curl . Would love to know what cut I could do for the air dry .
I was thinking about doing this haircut too, as it's easy to style. I used to have it about five years ago and now I realize I don't want it after seeing you do it. I can't go back. I just don't like short hair, not at all. I'm 60 now and I'm wearing it longer. I had it to my waist about six months ago, which was kind of long for my age. But, now it's past my collar bone and I like it much better. I have salt and pepper like you. We actually kinda look alike. 😅 On a side note, my adult son tells me that I look like a Shakespearean boy when I have this haircut, I just can't seem to get that out of my mind 😂
This is a beautiful haircut. I am feeling inspired!
