I was at Shea Stadium on 4/3/1973 when Willie drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Phillies 3-2. There were less than 20,000 fans there but it sounded like the Mets had won the World Series. One of my top baseball memories.
Cheers, Willie. You'll always be remembered in New York.

I was at that game also. I was 10. Dad took me to my first game. Asked me if I wanted to go to a game. I wasn’t sure I could sit for a WHOLE game. He said “let’s see.” What are the odds dad takes me to my first game and my favorite player hits the game winning rbi? The date was Saturday April 7, 1973 though.

It's too bad Willie's coaching career with the Mets was prematurely terminated. He left in 1979, but in 1980 the Mets drafted a kid named Darryl Strawberry. Who knows how things might have been if he had Willie Mays as an influence in his early years.

I just had one of those YT wormhole moments where I typed in "Willie Mays interview" and I found this. What an awesome 16 minutes. I am 61 and I grew up for my first few years near San Francisco and then my family moved to NYC. Willie was always my idol and when he was traded to the Mets in '72 I was overjoyed. At age 11, we went to Shea and watched a few games and it is one of my all time greatest childhood memories.
I own a personalized baseball he signed in 1970 and it sits on my desk. He is a fantastic human being and this interview shows his great passion, heart, and brains. He is a gift. I'm so glad to see him here at 88. He is now 91, and I wonder if there is more recent interviews. (I shall now go look for them).
    Love ya, Say Hey Kid.

Jim Jim Jim... Can you at least google the team if you insist on getting so involved. Willie came here in 1972. They were not a bad team. In '73 they were bad because everyone got hurt and they ripped off a bunch of last minute wins when the got healthy. 🙄

1970. Shea Stadium. It’s a week after my 7th Birthday and my dad has tickets to my first ever ballgame. It’s as big for him as it was me because his beloved Willie Mays is playing in New York again, like when he was kid. The Mets, of course, are coming off 1969 and a World Series upset over the great Baltimore Orioles. As I remember, Shea was packed. And since the Mets are defending champions, everyone wanted the Mets. Except ... for my dad and another guy sitting about 20 seats over and 5 rows up. I remember, Willie Mays, who my dad ALWAYS told me the greatest all-around player in baseball history, cracks a home run. The place goes quiet. But my dad and the other Mays’ fan are on their feet, cheering like nuts, yelling to each other about how great this is. Many fans were annoyed, I’m sure, but 50 years ago you could express differences in opinion and not get physically attacked. I thought we were going to be killed, but it didn’t work like that. End of the game and the Giants won in blowout. We’re leaving and so many older guys would come up to my dad and say, “you know, I wanted to cheer, too, but I didn’t want to upset anyone, so good job!” And I realized that A LOT more than 2 fans of Mays/Giants were in attendance. It really just seemed like it was 2 in the mind of a seven-year old boy, clearly I was mistaken. So, my first game ever I get to see the legacy Willie Mays hit a homer and, more importantly, I get to see my dad show me that a man stands up for his beliefs. Even if 50,000 other people disagree. It was fantastic and one of my most cherished memories.

I used to go there all the time when I was a kid. The AA affiliate of the White Sox, the Birmingham Barons played all of their home games there up until the late 80’s... then they built them a new stadium. It’s awesome. If you ever get a chance, visit it. It was the home of the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League back in the early 1900’s.
