When I went to see an ophtalmologist and read the eye chart, I didn`t pass the exam and got fitted for a pair of glasses for being farsighted. At least, I only need reading glasses. I liked very much your former first lady,Michell Obama, line: “When they go low we go high”. Really, some people can be cruel no matter how well we behave with them. That‘s why I agree with you; it`s better ignore them. Here my expressions: 1. Concerning to the usage of pair of glasses that my grandmother wore, well hindsight is 20/20.(Now that I use a pair of them I comprehend the situation) 2. I prefer not to be looking at the world through rose-colored glasses all the time. 3. I don`t ever want to lose sight of my duties but sometimes if I can`t avoid forgetting some, then I tell to myself ❝out of sight out of mind❞

"When they go low, we go high" is such a nice statement Jennifer. Being made fun of is a fact of life. I went through so much mental stress during my school days, as most of the classmates used to make a mockery out of me because I was the shortest and most introverted guy in the class . They mocked me to the point where I wanted to end my life. Now, I am not going to give a fig about being mocked.

I wear glasses permantely, it's not that bad, just make sure you have good comebacks incase someone does critisize you. And in my country we say longsited and shortsited.
Could you pls explain right sentences use for directing kids while playing ... like climb uphill, and want to know abt what words should we use for sloppy areas or roads and bridges or small slopes made for cyclist
That's very specific vocabulary. I know how to ride a bike, but I'm not a serious cyclist. Other than roads, bridges, paths, and hills, I'm not sure how to describe all the obstacles they face. As for what you can tell our kids, these warnings come to mind: Don't go too fast. Remember to brake going downhill. Wear a helmet. Stay on the path. Be careful going over the bridge.
1 "she" = girl or woman. I don't know without more context. 2 She's clearly a girl. If the listener knows who you're talking about, then 1 or 2 can be used. It doesn't matter.

It's not a silly question. We usually don't think too much about it and just accept that 20/20 vision is perfect vision. As I understand, the "20" refers to twenty feet. You can see letters accurately from a distance of 20 feet. Correction: I am also nearsighted, and I wear glasses.
I was nearsighted before I had surgery. ;) Correction: I don't have 20/20 vision. I need glasses because I'm nearsighted. I think it's fun to choose frames for new glasses. There are many options today. :)

You'll hear some variation, but it's similar to how we identify ourselves on the phone. More formally, I might say, "Hello. This is Jennifer Lebedev, and I'm calling to..." or "Hello. This is Jennifer Lebedev, and I'm calling to..." If I'm calling a friend or relative, I'm just quickly identifying myself and launching straight into a conversation: "Hi Dad. It's Jennifer." I expect a certain degree of familiarity with my viewers. It's like I'm picking up a conversation with you where we left off last week. :)

Yes, kids should learn at an early age to be kind and respectful toward others. I wasn't bullied about wearing glasses, just teased. It wasn't reoccurring.

I don't need glasses really. I have a pair that the doctor recommended for screen time to protect my eyes from the blue light. Also, I have a pair that I can wear while driving at night, but I'm not sure they really help with the glare of the lights. I can read the signs just fine.

Hi Slavik. In the U.S., "spectacles" sounds old-fashioned. We also don't use "eyeglasses" as much as "glasses." As in: Where are my glasses? I wear glasses. Etc. Have a good weekend!

Now I wear contacts since I don't like the heavy glasses on my nose. In everyday life, I always try to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. Yes! I had to practice it a couple times. Ha ha. That's why we just say "eye doctor." It's a lot easier. :) You'll find speech models if you use online dictionaries.
That's a handsome photo. You can joke and call yourself "four-eyes," but remember it's not a nice word. Kids use it to tease others who wear glasses. Your photo reminds me of the guy who helped me choose my new driving glasses. He looked very stylish in his frames, and he took the time to help me find a pair that suited my face and my coloring. :)

I teach some of the most important ophthalmologist in Brazil from the Sadalla Amim Eye Hospital in Joinville, the largest eye hospital in South America. I'd like to add some more interesting expressions. Farsighted = hyperopia - this means one cannot see near Nearsighted = myopia - this means one cannot see far The expressions seem to mean the opposite, but if you think like this, I can see far, so I am farsighted and oh, I can see near, so I am nearsighted.
Hi Maurice. Thank you for adding those terms! :) I debated getting into more advanced vocabulary like "myopic." That might be for another lesson. Then we can talk about literal and figurative meanings, like having a myopic view on an issue. What important work you do! I'm thankful to my current optometrist for taking care of me as well as the surgeon who did my LASIK surgery a decade ago.
They practice English with me, but I also help the owner with his computer and cell phone needs, his wife watches Jennifer videos with me and we read technical articles abut her specialty, contact lenses. I guess I focus on technical English in my teaching and translations.

Hi Jennifer. I got to watch this video when I was walking on the treadmill this afternoon. It's upsetting to hear your experience when you were in the fifth grade. School bullying seems pretty bad in this country. A while ago a boy from So You can Dance was crying and saying that he is afraid to go back to school after the show is over because the kids in his school were bullying him... It's so sad. The other day my husband and I talked about this topic. It seems that in China teachers take more responsibilities than teachers here in the US in general. I remember when I was in school, it's very common you just report to your teacher what the bad kids said or did to you, and you will get protected and the bad kids will get punished. It's also very rare to laugh at some students who wear glasses or braces. We never thought they are ugly or something. They are just necessary for these people who wear them. After I moved here, I did notice here in the US people care about how they look A LOT. You know I wear glasses all the time. ;) I used to ware contact lens when I was working in China. Later my eyes were getting more sensitive to them, so I switched back to glasses. Over time my vision is getting worse, so the glasses are getting thicker and heavier. I even thought about to have the surgery done. Unfortunately the doctor said my cornea is on the thinner side which means I am not a perfect candidate, so I gave up that idea for the reason of my health in the long run. Being healthy and natural makes more sense to me than caring about how I look to others. Thanks for the video, Jennifer. Oh, a lot of expressions you mentioned are actually new to me. ;)
Hi Rachel. Yes, teasing and bullying are problems in U.S. schools. I wouldn't say I was bullied, just teased. It was mean, but it wasn't ongoing. It's hard for kids to seek help because you're labeled as a "tattletale" if you inform on classmates and get them in trouble. Kids usually choose to ignore teasing or just handle it on their own. Yes, focus on your health and what makes YOU comfortable. It's not worth focusing on appearance all that much. Just enough to feel content. Glad you got some new expressions! Take care.
Hi Jennifer, I have to say that "tattletale" is the word of the day. ;) In Chinese culture we don't see tattling is wrong unless you inform something which is not true.
How timely! Well, did you get your new glasses yet? When you pick them up, you can ask to try them on immediately and see if the prescription is too strong or just right. Suggested wording: I just went to see the eye doctor/ my eye doctor a few weeks ago for a new prescription.

Yes, kids should learn at an early age to be kind and respectful toward others. I wasn't bullied about wearing glasses, just teased. It wasn't reoccurring.

I thought that you don't have glasses
I don't need glasses really. I have a pair that the doctor recommended for screen time to protect my eyes from the blue light. Also, I have a pair that I can wear while driving at night, but I'm not sure they really help with the glare of the lights. I can read the signs just fine.

Hi Slavik. In the U.S., "spectacles" sounds old-fashioned. We also don't use "eyeglasses" as much as "glasses." As in: Where are my glasses? I wear glasses. Etc. Have a good weekend!

I have been nearsighted since middle school. I had to wear prescribed glasses. Now I wear contacts since I don't like the heavy glasses on my nose. In everyday life, I always try to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. I also remind myself not to lose sight of the things I treasure the most.
Hello! Me too. I got glasses in 5th grade. I got contacts in 7th or 8th grade. ;) Then I was brave enough to have eye surgery as an adult.

That's a handsome photo. You can joke and call yourself "four-eyes," but remember it's not a nice word. Kids use it to tease others who wear glasses. Your photo reminds me of the guy who helped me choose my new driving glasses. He looked very stylish in his frames, and he took the time to help me find a pair that suited my face and my coloring. :)
Today, a friend of me asked me to translate for him at the glasses shop because he got a few problems, I had really just 30 minutes to meet him, I said to myself: "which words that I need to use, and I really was surprised that I found your video!". I teach some of the most important ophthalmologist in Brazil from the Sadalla Amim Eye Hospital in Joinville, the largest eye hospital in South America.
I'd like to add some more interesting expressions.
Farsighted = hyperopia - this means one cannot see near
Nearsighted = myopia - this means one cannot see far
The expressions seem to mean the opposite, but if you think like this, I can see far, so I am farsighted and oh, I can see near, so I am nearsighted.
Hi Maurice. Thank you for adding those terms! :) I debated getting into more advanced vocabulary like "myopic." That might be for another lesson. Then we can talk about literal and figurative meanings, like having a myopic view on an issue.
What important work you do! I'm thankful to my current optometrist for taking care of me as well as the surgeon who did my LASIK surgery a decade ago.
They practice English with me, but I also help the owner with his computer and cell phone needs, his wife watches Jennifer videos with me and we read technical articles abut her specialty, contact lenses. I guess I focus on technical English in my teaching and translations.

Hi Jennifer. I got to watch this video when I was walking on the treadmill this afternoon. It's upsetting to hear your experience when you were in the fifth grade. School bullying seems pretty bad in this country. A while ago a boy from So You can Dance was crying and saying that he is afraid to go back to school after the show is over because the kids in his school were bullying him... It's so sad. The other day my husband and I talked about this topic. It seems that in China teachers take more responsibilities than teachers here in the US in general. I remember when I was in school, it's very common you just report to your teacher what the bad kids said or did to you, and you will get protected and the bad kids will get punished. It's also very rare to laugh at some students who wear glasses or braces. We never thought they are ugly or something. They are just necessary for these people who wear them. After I moved here, I did notice here in the US people care about how they look A LOT. You know I wear glasses all the time. ;) I used to ware contact lens when I was working in China. Later my eyes were getting more sensitive to them, so I switched back to glasses. Over time my vision is getting worse, so the glasses are getting thicker and heavier. I even thought about to have the surgery done. Unfortunately the doctor said my cornea is on the thinner side which means I am not a perfect candidate, so I gave up that idea for the reason of my health in the long run. Being healthy and natural makes more sense to me than caring about how I look to others. Thanks for the video, Jennifer. Oh, a lot of expressions you mentioned are actually new to me. ;)
Hi Rachel. Yes, teasing and bullying are problems in U.S. schools. I wouldn't say I was bullied, just teased. It was mean, but it wasn't ongoing. It's hard for kids to seek help because you're labeled as a "tattletale" if you inform on classmates and get them in trouble. Kids usually choose to ignore teasing or just handle it on their own.
Yes, focus on your health and what makes YOU comfortable. It's not worth focusing on appearance all that much. Just enough to feel content.
