It’s been said before, but what happened with the Curtain Call is a huge butterfly effect in wrestling. If the Curtain Call never happened, we wouldn’t have the iconic Austin 3:16 promo and seeds being planted for the Attitude Era.
Wrong. The story is never told correctly....no one actually got heat in the back. Hunter was never a lock to win king of the ring either. It's all b.s. to make people think some other narrative.
“Austin 3:16 says ‘I just whipped your ass!’” is an iconic promo.
Hunter was “punished” for roughly five months, and Stone Cold was still getting mid-card matches after his iconic promo. WWE likes to push the narrative that Stone Cold skyrocketed directly after that promo.
@@AnthonyMackONE as someone who was actually around to watch that era unfold, it did start Austin's rise. He was having mid card matches but his popularity was very clear. The main event scene at that time was dull and Austin got into a feud with Hart soon after and that helped his rise further. 6mths after that promo he won the Rumble
@@bhaskunju Stone Cold was on the pre show at Summerslam that year and wasn't on the following PPV (IYH: Mind Games) at all. The idea that his popularity skyrocketed immediately after the 3:16 promo is indeed a myth.
Calling Over the Edge 1999 just controversial is an understatement. Everything about that ppv is so ominous, eerie and tragic.
It was far more than a tragedy or controversial. WWE basically killed Owen by foregoing safety with a rig that would allow Hart to unhook faster. Vince McMahon is a spawn of Satan and I hope his old lecherous ass ends up in prison.
Vince also counter sued the family
Just the name itself is creepy af
@@brotherdeimos yeah, plus the strange stage design with dim blue lights was also quite eerie. And the Undertaker was the poster boy of that ppv, a character that represents death and darkness and the creepy Undertaker promo that opens the ppv.
Yea it's one of the few ppv's I won't watch
Quick correction: That bloodstain on the canvas at Over the Edge 1999 was not from Owen. It was from a blood bath done by The Brood on Sunday Night Heat. If you look at the canvas, the stain is already there at the beginning of the PPV.
Owen Hart's injuries only caused internal bleeding and severe blunt-force hemorrhaging. He had no external bleeding.
Owen had a shattered left arm, There had to be blood but not much I assume as Owen was already bleeding out internally
Don't let your facts get in the way of the narrative
@@jspaceemperor420 you can't bleed OUT internally...lmao

Why would you say that date, now Kane is going to kill us all😂😂
😂😂😂
4:57 Seth has also said that Bray was even madder and rightfully so.
It's funny how HHH was the one who got punished for the Curtain Call, considering that out of the 4 of them, he's the one who has truly won in the long run.
He spoke on it and said that he knew what had to be done, because he was the smaller draw, and Shawn was the champ, so he took the fall. Vince said that's what made him start liking Hunter, because of what he did, and that's why he started getting the pushes that he did.
Context is always important; Triple H was much further down the card at that point and if he wasn't connected to Shawn, he may even have faced the possibility of being sacked 😐
I remember the Chris Benoit show airing, and a wrestling message board I was on, some of the people couldn't view the clips on the website because they were in a different region, so I was ripping them and putting them up for people. As I was doing that, they randomly started coming down from the WWE Website, and I remember thinking that was odd at the time. Now we know why.
I saw Benoit wrestle at a house show the Sunday before *that* happened. Still feels surreal.
I was driving to corpus christi when they said wwe raw was being postponed, crazy
I was at the ppv in Houston. He was supposed to go over punk
@@iamdavejohnson the house show in Savanah?
I don't believe Benoit did it 😐
I'll say this until the day I die. Over The Edge SHOULD have been canceled the moment that Owen fell... F*** Vince and Co for continuing the PPV knowing what they knew..
Owen liked to break people’s neck.
I'm in agreement, especially since the crowd in the arena just witnessed not only Owen's fall, but his death.
I can tell you nobody could be in the right state of mind after something like that.
Continuing the show kept the crowd in the seats. It allowed the paramedics time to get Owen out without having to fight a crowd, and generally kept people from panicking.
As tragic as it was it does seem like the most logical move to make in that scenario.
Yeah that's why I say Martha has every right to never forgive Vince and the WWE for that and their negligence. I get why Bret forgave them to some extent, given the way things turned out for him, but honestly I could never forgive them either if it were me.
Owen and Benoit are definitely going to be in this list
Did you write that before watching the video? Weirdo.
The Benoit tribute show they did for that Mon night Raw shouldn't be considered a misstep or something controversial. That was the night before everything hit the fan and we found out the details. WWE didn't know what happened. They shouldn't be ashamed for honoring Benoit that night.
@@Loe_Jist Oh I agree with that, WWE certainly couldn't have known one of their most respected and revered wrestlers would be capable of something so horrible, hell, who the hell could've? Yeah, maybe they should've waited till a few more details came out, but trying to honor Chris Benoit the Wrestler instead of Chris Benoit the Murderer shouldn't have bit them in the ass like it did
@@daltonpinell6251 in retrospect, I think of it as the last time they were able to show love and respect for their late friend and peer before his legacy was forever tarnished. That was their chance to show reverence to the Chris Benoit they knew. The next day, he'd never be seen in the same light again.
Mohammed Hassan was literally fired not by WWE, but by UPN!
let's not forget that it was Vince who greenlit and probably made the idea.
so Mohammed Hassan lost his job due to a stupid decision by his boss
@@woobgamer5210 Vince was like this is going to be great! Hassan was fired because his boss made a shitty decision and he took the blame! He was the scapegoat!
UPN actually told WWE to drop the character altogether, then the man behind the character, Mark Copani, sent to The Last Ride by the Undertaker (GAB 2005), sent back down to developmental and was released from the company in September 2005. Kevin Dunn should’ve been fired after the tasteless segment on SmackDown because he and Vince were responsible for the angle, in my opinion, wasn’t supposed to happen because the episode was taped the same day as the London bombings.
@@KadeemG61 But they also did he would never appeal again. So I'm thinking that included the guy that played him.
@@KadeemG61here is the thing: there was no going back. There was no way to bring the man who portrayed Hassain back in any way…
to be fair: WWE didn't know about the Benoit tragedy yet, all they knew was one of their hard working veterans passed away.
They had no confirmation from the authorities, but several of the wrestlers knew enough to have had the tribute put at least on hold. Regal, Chavo and others in WWE had received very unsettling messages from Benoit, making it quite clear that something deeper was happening. Regal even refused to speak about Benoit on a personal level for the tribute show, just saying he was a great wrestler. They knew it wasn't just an accident. They really should have postponed a full on tribute, based on what they aready knew.
It's hard to know for sure because the episode has been Thanos Snapped from existence, but I remember the next day thinking some of the wrestlers giving speeches were weary, as if they suspected what happened. Which is not only likely, those close to him would have to be idiots not to realize he was nuts at that point. He had *SEVERE* CTE and wasn't playing with a full deck for a while leading up to it. It's been almost 20 years so it's hard to remember it all, but I remember them saying that, for example, he was paranoid and always thought he was being followed, so he'd never take the same route twice.
A lot of people took that to mean there really were people after him and he was innocent, but sadly it's just symptoms of his brains being mashed potatoes. WWE damn well knew it too, despite claiming the events weren't related to CTE and he just did it because he's evil or some such. The kinds of moves that caused his CTE was instantly and universally banned, and there's no reason for that if CTE wasn't behind him going bonkers.
But I digress. Like I said, they might not have known he was >murderously< insane, but those near him had to know he wasn't playing with a full deck.
Somebody hacked his Wiki page to say he had been killed hours before the tribute aired 🤔🤔🤔
@@thestranger9608 No, they vandalized it to say he was taking time off because his wife died. The police ran down the IP and investigated, and said it was just a random troll with some very unfortunate timing.
I had Armageddon 99 on VHS and they did NOT edit it out of the home video release. Good times.
I remember Over the Edge ‘99. It was surreal to think that Owen had actually died and the show continued. All my mates and I were in disbelief when we went to school the next morning. I seem to remember there was a tribute to Owen in the WWF Attitude game. RIP.
There was. Same still shot used on programming after starting the game.
Should not have been continued. F Vince forever for that.
That wasn't Owen's blood
One thing that doesn't get mentioned often is that the WWF/E actually counter sued Martha Hart for breaching Owen's contract.
That was unforgivable honestly. I might be in the minority but I can understand why she's bitter. To be honest I would be too.
@@aidanthomas2510 I don't find her bitter. She's been vilified unfairly.
My god, that Fiend/Rollins HIAC match was easily one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen!

Good video, but for the record, the ring at OTE 1999 was NOT stained with Owen's blood. The blood stain had been from a hardcore match taping prior to the show (and in fact was there for the entirety of the show, even before the planned Owen match)
Actually it was the result of The Hardyz and Michael Hayes getting a blood bath from the Brood.
"When Austin 3:16 meets Pillman 9mm glock" is an insane line
The Chris Benoit tribute show is still fresh in my mind after all these years.
Crazy to think it'll be 20 years soon.
@@aidanthomas2510 i know right
Even 25 years later, I refuse to watch Over the Edge 1999. I can't, I just can't; I was almost asleep the night Owen died, only hearing about his death through Jim Rome's late night radio show.
Yep it's sad to watch and a lot of edits made to the show
Benoit hasn't been "completely" erased from WWE history. There are plenty of Benoit's matches still on Peacock. Especially the Wrestlmania matches he was in.
Yup even his final ecw match against Elijah Burke is up there. No kind of edits or advisory
3:45 Importantly, no shots were seen or heard on the broadcast. They were implied. That difference likely saved the show.
Say what you want about Jeff Jarret and Debra, I felt so bad for them during that pre-match Promo.. both visibly shook and barely able to keep it together and then having to be the first ones to the ring right after the tragedy .. I feel for them both
It's actually a shame that things went down the way it did with Muhammad Hassan because I felt like the character could have had legs
And I feel even worse for the guy performing cast the character because he was a pretty talented Italian wrestler he just needed to hone his craft and they never really let him get off the ground.
They could have taken out the terroristic angle and just possibly included that on another show or something more private.
They should have kept him home for a few months and repackage him on raw
@@thestranger9608 my thoughts exactly he was only banished from smackdown the USA network never said he wasn't allowed on raw.
WWE would never use the Over the Edge name again after 1999. They did however start to use the similar Over the Limit name in 2010, which also took place on May 23rd and featured Edge on the promotional poster. Thankfully it didn't happen in Kansas City, but still pretty morbid when you think about it.
They wouldn't run Kemper for 3 years after the tragedy. The next WWE show at Kemper was Backlash in 2002. WCW did run Kemper about a year after Owen's passing.
Over The Edge even as a name of a B-tier PPV was just odd, seeing that it was never thought of before especially with a ominous character like The Undertaker in the company since 1990 and already had themed PPVs named around his gimmick and personality traits (IYHs Buried Alive, A Cold Day in Hell, Badd Blood, and Judgment Day) so that alone just makes it harder to ever think Hunter or Shawn would want to reuse a name of a show both of them were unfortunately apart of and lost a colleague and friend in the process 😢😢😢
I can't ever find myself searching for a Benoit match to see just as a wrestling fan because what he did those 3 days erased all the hard work that he put in for 25-30 years and he'll never get the credit for any of it. The rivalries, matches, championships, and accomplishments GONE forever and infinity ♾️😢 RIP "Woman" Nancy and Daniel
Shawn wasn't a part of Over the Edge. He wasn't wrestling in 1999, and though he was making appearances at time on TV, he didn't there.
William Regal knew something was wrong! That man knew something happened!
based on the stories, just before he did his testamonial, regal was approached by JBL and he asked him "you don't think chris did something to them?". regal had a bit of time to marinate in his head. hence why his seemed so.........neutral.
@@maxacorn Okay! How did JB know something happened? Regal just seems so confident that this was all going to end badly when the truth came out!
William regal lived in the same town as the beniots in Georgia he had heard stories of from they're home town
@@lastdayonearthmysteryman4849
it seemed like he put the idea of it in regal's head. at that point, no one knew really anything about what happened in that house.
@@maxacorn Then it come out what Chris did! I remember I was five years old and I saw it on the news and was stock! Sadly now when someone found out I’m a wrestling fan this is the first thing they’re bring up!
I still remember December to dismember. There was not easy access to internet in my town so I watched the ppv by the end of December 2006. The first match between MNM and Hardys was decent after that disaster happened. If that did not kill ecw the Benoit situation killed completely.
Wow, Benoit wouldve been 57 this year. Cant imagine him and Eddie being that old and still wrestling.
if Eddie were still alive i think he would have moved to a role like producer or NXT coach and only getting in the ring part time to help put someone over
I saw a what if scenario once written by bleacher report I think
They said Benoit probably would have been a 2x ecw champ. And wrestle against one of his fellow Canadians like Edge or Jerocho
I recently found out that blood wasn't Owen's. It was from a match that happened before Owen's death.
First time I've ever heard Nick Berg related to the Undertaker Smackdown thing
Kinda fitting with the thumbnail as cm punk recently bought up on a interview that exact moment when he was weaping on camera over the chris benoit tribute show when talking about the vince mcmahon situation. 🤔
As it's been said a million times, that is not Owen's blood in the ring, it's literally there before his death.
It’s weird that Owen Hart’s widow doesn’t want WWE to promote any of Owen’s matches. Prior to Wrestlemania XL, Natalya did a vignette about Owen and Bret’s match at Wrestlemania X.
That's because Martha Hart is a greedy, jealous cow who only wants to promote herself and get as much money as she can from Owen's legacy.
I imagine she doesn't want WWE to benefit or profit from him any more than they already have.
If I remember correctly, there was actually a separate court case in the early 2010s where Martha tried to prevent WWE from ever making any sort of money off of (or even make reference to) Owen in any way, I believe due to the launch of the WWE Network & WWE wanting to make the Hart of Gold documentary/tribute DVD set. Essentially, Martha wanted to prevent WWE from ever making any more money at all off of Owen & the courts actually wound up siding with WWE, since Marth's demands were too harsh (Owen would have had to have been edited out of every show he was a part of on the Network, to comply), which allowed the Hart of Gold DVD set to see release in 2015, and WWE is legally allowed to reference Owen & show archival footage of him whenever they want, & I believe any Owen Hart royalties from WWE Network/Peacock & home video releases go to the Owen Hart Foundation, in turn. WWE is just very selective about when it references Owen today, due to the bad blood with Martha.
Considering the gross negligence involved and the fact that WWE sued her, it doesn't surprise me in the least.
The thumbnail is crazy

Masked Man from SVR 2009 might've been based on them. That's what I was thinking when I saw him.
I wouldn't call The Curtain Call or Austin's 3:16 promo the start of the Attitude Era. To me, it was the Pillman's gun segment. I mean, that was really raw! 🤣🤣🤣
Great video Adam.
Over The Edge 1999...enough said.
The PPV should have been canceled, because of what happened to Owen, and nobody could really concentrate.
Everyone always says watching Owen fall and die is horrifying, but think about this: everyone in the arena just witnessed a man fall from the top of the arena, and die right in front of them, and a friend of mine watching the PPV said younger kids had tears in their eyes...they knew the horrible reality.
I remember being in complete shock when Jim Ross said Owen had died from that accident.
Adam, if you can, or any of your friends who post the videos up, please make sure you bring up the people in the arena if you ever talk about that moment, because as I said nobody really talks about the people in the arena.
Thank you for your videos.
I wonder if they will ever bring back the over the edge pay-per-view
I doubt it and honestly they probably shouldn't.
And even come by 2100 if its around still.
With the 00's and 2010s stars most of them rip.
Even in 2100 1 hart will make sure wwe x owen nevrr happens again.
@@Insomniaaronyes they should
I don't think it's fair that the benoit show be controversial.
"Oh you shouldn't have aired it before you had all the facts"
But why would they assume their colleague and friend has done something so horrible?
And they apologized the very next night on ECW once they did know for sure, and black balled the man's name from their product (as they should).
Benoit's tribute in hindsight was saying goodbye to benoit the man and the performer before having his final actions attached to his name forever. Sort of a perfect goodbye to the wrestler we all loved before not being able to say his name without tragedy again
I mean tbh they originally had no prior knowledge to what happened with CB so they didn’t know until they eventually found out not much time later
So they say but Nancy Grace was reporting on it the same night I remember I hearing it from the living room.
If she had information about it wwe had to have information about it.
That's not true at all. The multiple documentaries about the situation have shown otherwise.
They may not have known he was >murderously< insane, but they knew he wasn't playing with a full deck. He had SEVERE CTE and those close to him knew he wasn't right in the head anymore.
But really, what were they supposed to do? If it turned out they died in a gas leak or some other accidental death, they'd have looked like monsters themselves for not giving him a tribute show that night on just the suggestion he MIGHT have done it. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They picked the safest course, and I can certainly see why. It's easy to judge in hindsight.
By any chance was this video related to Adam finding out about the Benoit Wikipedia edits on this week's Podcast? Strange timing if not.
2:04 Kane reference, nice 👍🏻
Thanks for reminding me about that Rollins Wyatt match 😭
Great vid :)
They didn’t do “encore “ presentations back during Over the Edge. You purchased the on demand and had it for 24 hours. They didn’t pull it until a few days went buy. I still have it on vhs. The broadcast did not show it, it was on a delay thankfully
8:37 that was one of my top 3 cultaholic documentaries of all time
I remember being there in Sacramento for that Hell in a Cell card. Was my first time seeing a WWE card and I’ll never forget the collective anger from a group of 10k people
so high rn i jst let myself watch a video filled with information I’ve known since becoming a wrestling fan.
That wasn’t Owen’s blood, it’s visible at the beginning of the ppv and Undertaker stayed in character for his match. The still shots of him from that night are always edited to make it look like he was upset, but upon rewatch it’s clear he was always in character
Yeah it always irks me when they get that wrong. The blood was from the brood's bloodbath earlier in the night.
Seeing Undertaker fighting tears while having his match post Owen's death is heartbreaking.
Thanks 🎉

I have to wonder...was Kane's storyline hatred for the date "May 19th" because of the curtain call occurring on that date? I remember his movie See No Evil was released on that date, but was it literally a coincidence or a carefully planned callback?
Still can’t believe they aired the Benoit tribute show without knowing the full details, doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the three dead bodies could be the result of a double-murder suicide
I remember at the time that they'd just moved house and people theorised carbon monoxide poisoning. They've asked before we knew anything about the texts and phone calls.
@@slashloveruk that theory was definitely plausible, I’m just amazed they didn’t wait until they 100% knew what happened just in case it was something more sinister than that
Can’t believe I was at that curtain call house show
Literally just watched Punk talk about weeping over Chris on The MMA Hour and now here it is in the thumbnail. Would have been crazy for him given he was supposed to wrestle Chris, and he also revealed that the week before it all happened Chris rushed him into the trainers room to see Daniel taping up his hands and drawing X's on them. With the benefit of hindsight that just makes the whole thing worse, can't imagine it sits well with Punk. RIP Nancy & Daniel.
Pullman had the most logical response to someone trying to break in his home to hurt him, especially considering his was injured. The story telling was realistic, but not appropriate for TV.

WWE Confidential had Shawn Michaels tells the interview girl that he knew. She had no idea what he was talking about. He told her he knew about the screw job and took part and to deny.
It's an excellent thing that ECW's "December to Disremember" is ONE & DONE on PPV!!!
I wasn’t watching WWE until 2010 but I can imagine watching the Benoit tribute episode and Over the Edge 1999 would be hard to watch.
3:45 Lexis King's playpen
Story where they got stuck on the plane was the biggest story during the early days of lockdown caused many of them to wanna quit all together thankfully from the looks of things wwe is doing much better nowadays
The Saudi show where damn near everyone was stuck over there was in November 2019, a few months before the world got locked down.
I understand Owen wife’s anger but I think it’s horrible she doesn’t let wwe acknowledge him cause I feel lik it hurts his legacy only cause the new generation will solely know him as Bret’s lil brother instead of the 2x slammy winner and as one of these or if and these greatest high flyer/ tec wrestlers of all time
the curtain call is funny to look at now when two of the guys are running wwe now
I'll never forget seeing Owen fall. I was 10 years old. It was my first ever live event.
Men show their chest on TV and face no penalties
This list should have included WWE mocking Britney. I mean, Vince, Johnny Ace and Kevin Dunn need to apologize for that too.
The curtain call was also why triple h had loss after loss until either 98 or 99 because that was his punishment
9:22 oh so saudi arabia is too far for john cena, but being chinese stooge is just fine? Lmao
The funniest thing about the Curtain Call is that if they just did it backstage nothing would have come of it. They just haaaad to do it publicly, haha.
That was not Owen Hart’s blood in the ring. That was Matt Hardy’s watch the episode of heat that happened before the pay-per-view. It’s on Peacock.
Does anyone know who were under the mask who attacked undertaker with Muhammad Hassan?
My guess is developmental guys since they usually play extras on wwe TV events while in developmental in 06 EC3 and Cesaro were backstage security guards
What about the episode when val venis got his thing sliced off?
Should have gone all the way and had Val come out as Miss Venus next week lmao
over the edge shouldn't have continued.
I remember that night 10:13 ...i forgot it was a three jour show and turned to it. I remember posting something about Chris Benoit on Myspace and then deleted it shortly after. As soon as i turned it on, i caught the very end of CM Punk crying. And i was about to not watch anymore because I thought they were making wrestlers cut tribute promos about Vince because I hadn't heard about the Benoit family situation before i turned it on. Intrigued, i wanted to see where it was going. Then i was a bit sad when it came on and they were talking about the situation. I wanted to call my dad, who was at the casino with my mom l, but figured he wouldn't be able to hear. And i felt bad for mocking Punk during the commercial. Had I heard him say Chris Benoit, I would have been like what the heck? But i was under the impression that he was crying over Vince.
Also heairng about Owen's death late at night on the news. Before bed. Justying the trying to fall sleep. That was sadder because i was a big Owen fan. Some of the kids at school were sad about it too. Took me awhile to find an action figure of him. I used the John Smith from McDonald's pochantas toy for awhile. The Hills store was going out of business, so i went like a day or two later and got the Owen and Rock nation two pack. I had some Bkue Blazer figures too. Sadly all of my figures were thrown away or lost between moves. I really think Owen would have been WWF/WWE champion or even World Champion had that not happened and he didn't leave wrestling.
I was 19 years old when Owen Hart died. Because I didn't watch the PPV. I didn't know the next night on Raw.
Chris Benoit family murder and his suicide was shocking. Never expected that he done. Thought it could been a robbery gone wrong.
Im in business for myself, horsemen business

The finish alone of that hell in a cell match makes it the worst hell in a cell match of all time in my book. One fall to a finish?
The recurring theme of all of these is Vince McMahon being a stupid pos and other being blamed for his f ups.

How tf do you get denied a release?
Either
A) They have televised plans and can't let them go
B) They don't want them freed up for the competition
C) They don't want to pay the severance
I guess it depends how far into their contracts they are or if what the plans are. Like Victoria had 2 years on her contract but was able to ask for her release as they had no plans for her. Rene Dupree asked for his release I think when he was in rehab
So (#3) when does that contract expire?
why is cm punk on the thumbnail
Debra sighting in the number 1 pick !
Over The Edge 1999 wasn’t just controversial, it was a tragedy and it was beyond horrific that the show wasn’t immediately canceled. It still pisses me (and I’m sure many others) off to even think about, the call to keep the show running was morbid, cruel, and unnecessary. It’s also stands as a small glimpse into the fucked up, greedy, selfish, and utterly psychotic mind of one of the worst men to ever live, Vincent Kennedy McMahon. Rant finish, opinion stated.
I enjoyed December To Dismember
