Lee apparently could bring up an icy stare that could stop a clock and had a lethal temper that he worked hard all of his life to control. I imagine General Stuart experienced some of that when he eventually arrived at Gettysburg!
Once a soldier facing the prospect of courts martial was brought before the general. Lee sat erect behind his desk, looked the soldier in the eye and said, "you have nothing to fear. You will receive justice here." To which the soldier replied; "that's what I'm afraid of."
In General Stuart's defense, the Google Maps app on his phone sent him to the wrong battlefield location. Google sucked like this throughout the whole Civil War.
Perfect example of leadership. Presenting the problem, explaining why it happened and how to avoid it. He doesn't have to threaten with any consequences, just with his choice of words and tone General Stuart understands how grave his failure truly was. All in all, imo it cements that Lee in this scene is skirting around the word, "failure". As a mistake is accidental, what Stuart did was fail to act, whether by not properly understanding his purpose in Lee's army, or any other seemingly small factor that led to his circumstances.
Well written too.. When Lee first mentions there is no time for half ass work or self blame. It finally gets through Stuart's head how grave the situation is when there is no resources or time to even replace him due to his errors. Stuart knows he MUST do his very best moving forward.........no excuses.
This should be shown to every Manager or supervisor on how to deal with subordinates. Yelling and screaming at someone does not work. Breaking them down and then building them back up is always the best course of action.

Here you see it slip out, then he instantly is ashamed of it, and backs off. This is also a clinic on how to manage people. Tear them down, then build them back up.

He did the same thing at the end of the war. He could've easily told the men of the South to fight guerrilla style and keep going but he wanted no more bloodshed. He surrendered and told his men to go back to their peaceful lives.

Lee was a man of character. I love a story about him where one day in church, after the war, when there were both blacks and whites in the church. When the time for communion came the first person to approach the alter and kneel was a older black man. No one else went forward for what must have seemed like an eternity. The church was absolutely quiet. After a minute or two a white man then approached the altar and knelt next the the African American. It was Robert E. Lee. After he knelt the rest of the people in the church as one went forward to receive communion together! He was a man of character!
@@tdirtyatl I saw it in a documentary on tv. I've also read about it. I will see if I can find a reference. I saw both about 10 years ago. The documentary was basically about how much he shaped the post-war period. He could have ordered his troops to fight a guerrilla type war that may have gone on for years. The Church story does fit into that line of his reasoning to stop all the fighting and accept that the black people would no longer be slaves. So, seems possibly true.

There's a good reason why Lee is considered the greatest general in American history second only to George Washington. Lee was able to inspire the men under his command to fight on even against impossible odds and WIN, even when there was no logical explanation for his victories other than pure tactical genius.

Stewart's Corps did capture 120 wagons of supplies while foraging that slowed down their progress. They would need those wagons after the imminent battle, though.

sheen played lee so perfectly that im depressed everytime i see someone else playing him in my opinion sheen was born to play lee, and i put this casting up with the likes of robert downey jr as tony stark and hugh jackman as wolverine
Martin Sheen was absolutely brilliant in this film. I've read Lee's biography by D.S. Freeman and Sheen's performance captures Lee's personality and traits perfectly. No one else was in the room when this meeting took place. Stuart did not survive the war, and Lee never wrote an autobiography, so this scene is outstanding, regardless of any artistic license that may have been used.
This Jeb Stuart incident is fairly significant. Lee only fought at Gettysburg because he needed to concentrate his army ASAP and all roads led to Gettysburg. Had Jeb been keeping Lee up to date the battle probably would have been fought in another location that wasn't so advantageous to the north.
General Lee actually had to brigades of cavalry with him. One was commanded by him nephew General Fitzhugh Lee and another general. Lee trusted no one but his chief of cavalry.
When I played goalie in hockey and played poorly; I felt terrible when I let the team down. I don't feel so bad now; can't imagine how Stuart felt letting down the army and the legendary Lee.
Lee knew exactly how to discipline without destroying. He told Stuart exactly what he did wrong, but didn't overdo it. Then he defused any ill feelings by complimenting him on his qualities and abilities as a cavalry commander. That is communication of the highest order.
In one of the great ironies of the Civil War, the south starts to lose is best commanders in Jackson and Stuart while the north starts to bring it bench into play. The arrival of Grant and the east and Sherman in the west effectively dooms the south.
Let's not forget George Meade. You don't always need brilliance where competence will serve, and Meade was a humble, competent commander who didn't care a damn for glory as long as his boys won. His conservative approach in the battle is what led to victory, and while Grant felt he had to ride with Meade to ensure his army showed the proper aggression, he never impugned Meade's abilities as a commander of an army
Shelby Foote recounted the story of a private brought up before Lee on a disciplinary matter and was quite obviously unnerved at the thought. Lee said to him, "Don't fear, you will get justice," to which the solider said, "I know, that"s why I'm shaking!"

It kind of glosses over the fact that Stuart was also supposed to grab provisions and he captured a huge supply train that slowed him down. So he did have "reasons." More blame should to to Heth for bringing on a major engagement on Day 1 and for Ewell not pressing on as Jackson would have done once the Union broke on Day 1.
Hill was also to blame. If he was going to perform his own infantry recon, a division of infantry backed by a battalion of artillery wasn't the way to go. Hindsight being 20/20, I guess in his shoes i'd have sent a cloud of skirmishers forward with orders to probe unless solid resistance was met--then break contact and report. That's as close as I cold come to Lee's orders not to force an engagement until the whole army is up and concentrated (again, 20/20 hindsight).
Jackson's loss at Chancellorsville the previous Spring was irreplaceable. "He has lost his left arm, I have lost my right." (RE Lee) Baldy Ewell was hobbling about on a wooden leg by Gettysburg, the wound seems to have taken some of the edge off his initiative and aggression. He wasn't a suitable replacement for Stonewall, but who was?
...... and the next day General Stuart goes out and "meets his Waterloo" at East Cavalry Field, Gettysburg... as he is defeated by the 2nd Cavalry Division of the Army of the Potomac. General Custer was present!!
It'd being seemed liked the Union Army had been in the critically situation that's might them to lost war to Federation Army's that'd being advanced day by day without any hurdle from the remaining balanced of the Union Army reassemble gathering.
If Lee has simply keep moving North, he would have connected with Straut around Charlie or York Pennsylvania. The Confederates had already achieved a spectacular success by marching into Pennsylvania and stealing several days march on the Federal Army that was in the midst of a command change and reorganization. General Ewell in Command of Stonewall Jackson's Famed Foot Cavalry had already made it as far as York and was looking across the River at the Capital Harrisburg and preparing to take the State Captial when the Urgent Order arrived from Lee to abandon that effort and march South to Gettysburg to reconnect with the rest of the Army. Thus, setting in motion Buford's stand and the meeting engagement which became the devastating and costly Battle of Gettysburg. If Lee had simply told A.P. Hill to push on and keep moving, he could have easily brushed Buford's cavalry aside and the Federal Army could have not caught up to Lee for at least 3-4 more days. By that time Lee if he moved with purpose could have concentrated on good defensive ground around Charlie or York or even crossed the river and seized Harrisburg which was defended only by a handful of untested state militia. Also, Straut expected Lee to be around Charlie and naturally rode to that spot missing Lee by over a day and then having to track South himself and not catching up the Army until July 2nd at which time due to Lee's aggressiveness was embroiled and tangled in a meeting engagement that offered no assurance for Victory. The Blame is squarely on Lee and to a large extent A.P Hill who was not at the front and sent in only part of one division to probe Buford giving him time to make a defensive stand when he had more than enough force to crush him or push his aside with ease.
I'm surprised that Lee didn't sack Stewart for being out in his little joyride raiding supplies 12 miles away on day one instead of reconning , big blunder
Stuart followed his orders. They were approved by Longstreet and Lee in Virginia. Stuart left Lee 4 cavalry Divisions out of 7 in Cavalry Corps. Stuart took 3 Divisions. Lee had Cavalry, but just didn't use them. Lee missed Stuart...not lack of cavalry.

Lee was all spread out, and Stuart was in the NE I think a day and half chasing stories from locals where the main body was. I also think JEB Stuart wasted critical time attacking Carlisle PA. I guess Untied States Cavalry HQ was was target he couldn't resist. P.S. my intention was not to argue or prove you wrong about anything. Just having a conversation. Had Stuart been out in front of Lees Army as he should have been? It would have been Stuart and his Cavalry who would have encountered Buford on Day 1 instead of the hapless General Heth and the Clueless A.P Hill??? It would have been at worst a day long Cavalry engagement and both Armies would not have used Gettysburg as concentration point. Meade would have likey established his line along Pipe Creek and went on the defense covering all routes to Washington and Baltimore. Lee would have had a major decision to move against Meade's line along Pipe Creek or keep moving North and capture Harrisburg. The Whole nature of the War would have been changed. But Stuart was not there and it cost The South the War. Lee also deserves much blame for Pickett's Charge, a Charge that never should have been attempted.
On the face of it, this is seen in multiple YT clips as being some ultimate man-management advice - but on the other, Lee was plagued by not doing what seemed obvious in terms of setting feuds among commanders or cracking down on infractions... I don't know whether to savour or pity this scene, then.
Firstly you don't salute indoors with your hat off. Secondly Stuart was following Lee's vague orders. Lastly Stuart left enough Calvary with Lee to provide screening and intelligence duties. Unfortunately Stuart left his worse office in command.
This is true. Fitzhugh Lee's division I believe. And Lee once commanded a cavalry regiment so its not as if he had no experience with them, in fact he probably taught Stuart some of what he knew. To this day its not clearly known why he did not use them.

It is easy to pick the winners of a horse race...after it has occurred. This is what a commanding general has to deal with as much as sending men to die...think of WWII with Patton & Montgomery...and Ike & Bradley dealing with prima donna's, though no doubt good generals failed to satisfy the chain of command they imposed on their inferior officers. Lee had no time for hurt feelings.
If the army was blind without JEB it seems like the better option would have been to listen to Longstreet and position themselves between the Union and DC and wait for him to return. Why be so aggressive while you're blind?
Worst kind of chewing out no yelling, no threats just quiet words making you feel that you let everybody down. Followed it up by praising his qualities as a commander. Had a First Sargeant do that to me when I was a Sargeant in the Army, I had done something really stupid he took me aside looked me in the eye and said I am very disappointed in you. Made me feel like I let my dad down then, after I had redone the task and excelled at it He looked at me and I knew you could do it.
Saluting without a hat is not done in the Canadian and commonwealth military you simply stand at attention before a superior officer but is common practice with the American military.
One thing about this movie. Actually any movie where Southern people are portrayed. The accents. Every single actor tries to affect this lazy deep southern drawl. Im from Virginia. Grew up in the western Appalachians and then lived for many years in Richmond. No native has that accent.
Especially true in the case of Lee, who was originally from Stratford Hall. His accent would have been much, much lighter than the deep south drawl Sheen gave him.
This is why Lee was a greater general than any in the north. When one of his men made a mistake, he wouldn't humiliate them in public but rather reprimanded them privately to ensure they could still lead men afterwards.

The shame is that the war had to happen - slavery is a sin, one of the worst things mankind's done, and we've done some evil shit. The fact that so many people had to die to end such an abominable institution is indeed a shame.

What about General Pettigrew? He brought his brigade to the town the night before the battle and then withdrew because he felt staying would be in violation of Lee's order to avoid a general engagement. That decision gave the advantage and initiative to Buford and meant that the ANV would have to fight for ground that it had occupied the previous day without firing a shot. That's insane. How many good men died to regain Seminary Ridge? If he had stayed put, Pettigrew would have denied the high ground to Buford's cavalry and made it easier for Heth's men to push them back. Keeping the high ground could also have allowed Lee's army to adopt a defensive posture and force Meade to attack them---as Longstreet wanted. Pettigrew should have dug in, called for artillery to be brought up, and then encouraged General Heth---his divisional commander---to rush up the remainder of his command. He could have done all of that and still comply with Lee's order. The lack of initiative shown by Pettigrew is shocking.
Philip Hughes Pettigrew also had no idea what the disposition of the federal army was and the confederate positions were very thinly spread out. Without cavalry they could have bumped right into a federal corps and been destroyed in detail. Plus, Pettigrew was from North Carolina and may not have had good maps or been aware that Gettysburg was such a critical road junction with excellent defensive terrain. Buford had the benefit as a cavalry commander who could see the importance of the ground and knew where the rebs were. And he took the initiative to hold the high ground for the Union army for the rest of the battle. If Pettigrew had intelligence from his own cavalry, he would have been properly equipped to take the initiative instead.
He shouldn't have needed maps to make a decision to stay. One look at the town should have made him realize that it was a strategic location and worth holding. I'm not suggesting Pettigrew should have attacked on his own, but he should have held the high ground---as Buford did. Buford wasn't from the area but he immediately realized the strategic value of the area. As soon as Pettigrew withdrew from Seminary Ridge, Buford occupied it. Thus Heth's division had to fight hard for a position it had occupied the night before. Staying put would have put pressure on Meade to attack the Confederates who, being in a strong defensive position, were well placed to throw him back with serious loss.
People commenting on this scene like like it was gospel truth this happened. Fact is, NO ONE was in the room but Lee and Stuart and neither talked about it. It turning into a huge reprimand by Lee was written AFTER the war by those trying to push the Lost Cause Myth. Lee was deep in enemy territory, it wouldn't take a genius to know the enemy would be engaging him. He should have treated any engagement as being against lead elements of the Army of the Potomac. HIs entire purpose was to draw out the A of Potomac.

Martin Sheen was absolutely brilliant in this film. I've read Lee's biography by D.S. Freeman and Sheen's performance captures Lee's personality and traits perfectly. No one else was in the room when this meeting took place. Stuart did not survive the war, and Lee never wrote an autobiography, so this scene is outstanding, regardless of any artistic license that may have been used.
Being a Disappointment to someone tiu greatly admire, and who trusts you is a punishment in itself. Very well acted.
This Jeb Stuart incident is fairly significant. Lee only fought at Gettysburg because he needed to concentrate his army ASAP and all roads led to Gettysburg. Had Jeb been keeping Lee up to date the battle probably would have been fought in another location that wasn't so advantageous to the north.

General Lee actually had to brigades of cavalry with him. One was commanded by him nephew General Fitzhugh Lee and another general. Lee trusted no one but his chief of cavalry.

Lee knew exactly how to discipline without destroying. He told Stuart exactly what he did wrong, but didn't overdo it. Then he defused any ill feelings by complimenting him on his qualities and abilities as a cavalry commander. That is communication of the highest order.

In one of the great ironies of the Civil War, the south starts to lose is best commanders in Jackson and Stuart while the north starts to bring it bench into play. The arrival of Grant and the east and Sherman in the west effectively dooms the south.
Let's not forget George Meade. You don't always need brilliance where competence will serve, and Meade was a humble, competent commander who didn't care a damn for glory as long as his boys won. His conservative approach in the battle is what led to victory, and while Grant felt he had to ride with Meade to ensure his army showed the proper aggression, he never impugned Meade's abilities as a commander of an army

Shelby Foote recounted the story of a private brought up before Lee on a disciplinary matter and was quite obviously unnerved at the thought. Lee said to him, "Don't fear, you will get justice," to which the solider said, "I know, that"s why I'm shaking!"

The worse part for a man like Stuart or any person is letting down someone you admire most in the world.
When Lee is mad, you know you should shut up, and Stuart knew exactly to do that.

It kind of glosses over the fact that Stuart was also supposed to grab provisions and he captured a huge supply train that slowed him down. So he did have "reasons." More blame should to to Heth for bringing on a major engagement on Day 1 and for Ewell not pressing on as Jackson would have done once the Union broke on Day 1.
Hill was also to blame. If he was going to perform his own infantry recon, a division of infantry backed by a battalion of artillery wasn't the way to go. Hindsight being 20/20, I guess in his shoes i'd have sent a cloud of skirmishers forward with orders to probe unless solid resistance was met--then break contact and report. That's as close as I cold come to Lee's orders not to force an engagement until the whole army is up and concentrated (again, 20/20 hindsight).
Priorities, priorities... supplies are one thing, the position of an enemy army and communications with your own should take precedence

Baldy Ewell was hobbling about on a wooden leg by Gettysburg, the wound seems to have taken some of the edge off his initiative and aggression. He wasn't a suitable replacement for Stonewall, but who was?
...... and the next day General Stuart goes out and "meets his Waterloo" at East Cavalry Field, Gettysburg... as he is defeated by the 2nd Cavalry Division of the Army of the Potomac. General Custer was present!!

Lee had Jones Cavalry Brigade with him 2500 men, so the Stuart thing is overblown. Though Stuart's excursion with the Cavalry Corp. was ill-advised.

If Lee has simply keep moving North, he would have connected with Straut around Charlie or York Pennsylvania. The Confederates had already achieved a spectacular success by marching into Pennsylvania and stealing several days march on the Federal Army that was in the midst of a command change and reorganization. General Ewell in Command of Stonewall Jackson's Famed Foot Cavalry had already made it as far as York and was looking across the River at the Capital Harrisburg and preparing to take the State Captial when the Urgent Order arrived from Lee to abandon that effort and march South to Gettysburg to reconnect with the rest of the Army. Thus, setting in motion Buford's stand and the meeting engagement which became the devastating and costly Battle of Gettysburg. If Lee had simply told A.P. Hill to push on and keep moving, he could have easily brushed Buford's cavalry aside and the Federal Army could have not caught up to Lee for at least 3-4 more days. By that time Lee if he moved with purpose could have concentrated on good defensive ground around Charlie or York or even crossed the river and seized Harrisburg which was defended only by a handful of untested state militia. Also, Straut expected Lee to be around Charlie and naturally rode to that spot missing Lee by over a day and then having to track South himself and not catching up the Army until July 2nd at which time due to Lee's aggressiveness was embroiled and tangled in a meeting engagement that offered no assurance for Victory. The Blame is squarely on Lee and to a large extent A.P Hill who was not at the front and sent in only part of one division to probe Buford giving him time to make a defensive stand when he had more than enough force to crush him or push his aside with ease.

Stuart followed his orders. They were approved by Longstreet and Lee in Virginia. Stuart left Lee 4 cavalry Divisions out of 7 in Cavalry Corps. Stuart took 3 Divisions. Lee had Cavalry, but just didn't use them. Lee missed Stuart...not lack of cavalry.

@@badmonkey2222 I agree with you about Lee. Also remember the meeting point was the river far to the NE. Ewell made it and has to turn back. Longstreet's Corps was slow and slowed the whole army. Lee was all spread out, and Stuart was in the NE I think a day and half chasing stories from locals where the main body was. I also think JEB Stuart wasted critical time attacking Carlisle PA. I guess Untied States Cavalry HQ was was target he couldn't resist. P.S. my intention was not to argue or prove you wrong about anything. Just having a conversation. But I do think Lee took everything into consideration about Stuart being late... especially the Army not being where it should have been by June 30th.👍🇺🇸
Had Stuart been out in front of Lees Army as he should have been? It would have been Stuart and his Cavalry who would have encountered Buford on Day 1 instead of the hapless General Heth and the Clueless A.P Hill??? It would have been at worst a day long Cavalry engagement and both Armies would not have used Gettysburg as concentration point. Meade would have likey established his line along Pipe Creek and went on the defense covering all routes to Washington and Baltimore. Lee would have had a major decision to move against Meade's line along Pipe Creek or keep moving North and capture Harrisburg. The Whole nature of the War would have been changed. But Stuart was not there and it cost The South the War. Lee also deserves much blame for Pickett's Charge, a Charge that never should have been attempted.

On the face of it, this is seen in multiple YT clips as being some ultimate man-management advice - but on the other, Lee was plagued by not doing what seemed obvious in terms of setting feuds among commanders or cracking down on infractions... I don't know whether to savour or pity this scene, then.
Firstly you don't salute indoors with your hat off. Secondly Stuart was following Lee's vague orders. Lastly Stuart left enough Calvary with Lee to provide screening and intelligence duties. Unfortunately Stuart left his worse office in command.

This is true. Fitzhugh Lee's division I believe. And Lee once commanded a cavalry regiment so its not as if he had no experience with them, in fact he probably taught Stuart some of what he knew. To this day its not clearly known why he did not use them.

It is easy to pick the winners of a horse race...after it has occurred. This is what a commanding general has to deal with as much as sending men to die...think of WWII with Patton & Montgomery...and Ike & Bradley dealing with prima donna's, though no doubt good generals failed to satisfy the chain of command they imposed on their inferior officers. Lee had no time for hurt feelings.

If the army was blind without JEB it seems like the better option would have been to listen to Longstreet and position themselves between the Union and DC and wait for him to return. Why be so aggressive while you're blind?
Worst kind of chewing out no yelling, no threats just quiet words making you feel that you let everybody down. Followed it up by praising his qualities as a commander. Had a First Sargeant do that to me when I was a Sargeant in the Army, I had done something really stupid he took me aside looked me in the eye and said I am very disappointed in you. Made me feel like I let my dad down then, after I had redone the task and excelled at it He looked at me and I knew you could do it.
The problem with this scene is that Lee didn't say 'there is no tyyyyyme' often enough...

Army commonly salutes indoors, with or without a cover. Navy and Marine Corps, only when armed indoors.
Saluting without a hat is not done in the Canadian and commonwealth military you simply stand at attention before a superior officer but is common practice with the American military.

One thing about this movie. Actually any movie where Southern people are portrayed. The accents. Every single actor tries to affect this lazy deep southern drawl. Im from Virginia. Grew up in the western Appalachians and then lived for many years in Richmond. No native has that accent.
Especially true in the case of Lee, who was originally from Stratford Hall. His accent would have been much, much lighter than the deep south drawl Sheen gave him.

This is why Lee was a greater general than any in the north. When one of his men made a mistake, he wouldn't humiliate them in public but rather reprimanded them privately to ensure they could still lead men afterwards.

What about General Pettigrew? He brought his brigade to the town the night before the battle and then withdrew because he felt staying would be in violation of Lee's order to avoid a general engagement. That decision gave the advantage and initiative to Buford and meant that the ANV would have to fight for ground that it had occupied the previous day without firing a shot. That's insane. How many good men died to regain Seminary Ridge? If he had stayed put, Pettigrew would have denied the high ground to Buford's cavalry and made it easier for Heth's men to push them back. Keeping the high ground could also have allowed Lee's army to adopt a defensive posture and force Meade to attack them---as Longstreet wanted. Pettigrew should have dug in, called for artillery to be brought up, and then encouraged General Heth---his divisional commander---to rush up the remainder of his command. He could have done all of that and still comply with Lee's order. The lack of initiative shown by Pettigrew is shocking.
Philip Hughes Pettigrew also had no idea what the disposition of the federal army was and the confederate positions were very thinly spread out. Without cavalry they could have bumped right into a federal corps and been destroyed in detail. Plus, Pettigrew was from North Carolina and may not have had good maps or been aware that Gettysburg was such a critical road junction with excellent defensive terrain.
Buford had the benefit as a cavalry commander who could see the importance of the ground and knew where the rebs were. And he took the initiative to hold the high ground for the Union army for the rest of the battle. If Pettigrew had intelligence from his own cavalry, he would have been properly equipped to take the initiative instead.
He shouldn't have needed maps to make a decision to stay. One look at the town should have made him realize that it was a strategic location and worth holding. I'm not suggesting Pettigrew should have attacked on his own, but he should have held the high ground---as Buford did. Buford wasn't from the area but he immediately realized the strategic value of the area. As soon as Pettigrew withdrew from Seminary Ridge, Buford occupied it. Thus Heth's division had to fight hard for a position it had occupied the night before. Staying put would have put pressure on Meade to attack the Confederates who, being in a strong defensive position, were well placed to throw him back with serious loss.

Lee was deep in enemy territory, it wouldn't take a genius to know the enemy would be engaging him. He should have treated any engagement as being against lead elements of the Army of the Potomac. HIs entire purpose was to draw out the A of Potomac.
