i have been a barber for 34 years and years, so people who are just starting out in the trade should listen to this master barber...reason maybe because he has seen it all..well almost, understand that calling an older guy sir is not demeaning to yourself and nor is putting their jacket on. its all part of your job as a barber. its just like life you have to earn respect. and respect to this fellow barber.
Bro this is a straight talk video. In my opinion, the best barber video that isn't a "How To..." but one that appeals to this Master Barber by simply keeping it real. By the way, I like your interesting barber logo. Much success; keep it real and stay honest... Memphis Barber
Shorty is awesome. Got an excellent cut from him today. Such a fun guy to chat with too, he knows his business. His staff are super friendly too and offered me a beer while I waited. After the haircut Shorty had his dog do little tricks which was cute.
I've owned many barbershops w/ many barbers that worked w/ me. Today at 62, I am at peace in a one chair shop where all I do is play soft music and cut hair; moreover, I DISCOURAGE TALKING. I am not their psychologist or their friend, but I am their best barber.
In my 18 years of life, I have never once been to a Barber Shop. My mom always did it herself, or she took me to a salon. It eas till about last year that I really started caring about how my hair looks, and trying different styles. Then I realized how difficult my hair is to look decent. Having curly hair really throws a wrench in the works as I can't have one of those "comb once and done" haircuts that I envy so much. And using product doesnt really seem to help. I'm going to a barber shop tomorrow for the first time, and hoping to come out with a fresh new cut. Thanks for this video, now I know some ofnthe basucs before I get in there and just tell them "a little off the top".
When I was 18 I had always went to a barber.Seems like every kid got the same haircut. At that time barbers were retiring or dying. In college I tried this "unisex" shop which was nothing more than this local chain of beauty parlors changing its name. Many elderly ladies in there with pin curls and rollers on their head. I was never in a " salon" before and this was more of a beauty shop , with a new name , not a masculine setting at all. A lady as old as my grandmother cut my hair. First, she washed my hair which I've never had done in a shop before. I was a little figidity and nervous, with the big long plastic cape and towels on me and my head way back in the sink, felt weird having someone else wash my hair. I remember she shampooed my very firmly lots of lather and rinsing. When she cut my hair , the haircut was really good! Wasn't bad for $7 wash cut & dry.. I just hated the hairspray. But as time went on and I moved around I started seeing more barbershops opening, new blood , new styles, technique and a nice diversity of them. I've got a great one now, love the straight razor shaves. Hope you found yours.
Hello. New subscriber. Great video. I’m 60 and have been going to barbers all my life. I thought I was a good client. I was definitely making some mistakes. I’m 6 months in my beard and have an appointment with a new barber for a beard trim and haircut and now I now how to get the best out of my haircut and experience and also be welcomed back into the shop. Thanks.
... the 2 "thumbs down" are women... Great video, but saying these are tips.... is almost an insult! ;) What you say in this video is how a Barbershop should realy be and what it should stand for!! it is exactly how I run my Barbershop in Europe! We should talk about a world wide Syndicate of Barbers... Me; Barber since 1989 and dedicated to our profession with heart and soul. Clean cuts, perfect shaves for every man no matter where he's from or who he is! A man is a man and we make sure he stays that way!
Great tips! I will go more prepared for my next haircut! I also really appreciate the social aspect of classic-style barber shops and yes, turn off the f*cking iPhone and have a conversation!!! :) thanks for sharing!
Hi, you mentioned your from San Francisco. Cool, I was raised in Cupertino right next door. I moved to Redding, Ca. about 10 yrs ago. Can't find a decent Barber withinn 250 miles of this town. My 13 yr old son rocks a 4 inch pompador. I have to drive him over 3 hrs for a decent haircut. WTH!! Now he's looking to do some hair tattoo designs on his head. Can't find anyone local to do it, and that sucks! It would be awesome if you could recommend a place around our town. So you know of any? I've looked and can't find anyone in town that doesn't hack my son's head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Have a great day...
Guy goes into a barber shop and asks for a Tony Curtis. Barber cuts his hair and shows him the cut. That's not a Tony Curtis says the customer. It would be if he got his hair cut here, says the barber
There is no such thing as a "Master Barber" Whenever you look at someones license I can assure you It'll say Class A Barber. People use that term to boost themselves honestly, no offense to the user. But.. If one does call themselves a "Master Barber" they should be able to do any type of haircut with the skills they've learned.
You don't really need to pull the skin tight to shave the neck because the hair on the neck are usually just baby hair. The beard however is a must because the hair is very coarse and need to be pulled for a perfect clean shave.
clearly you're not a barber, depending on the individual sometimes around the neck the skin does not need to pulled, as its tight already, educate yourself before you comment..
Barbers and shops like this are the reason why the rest flourish. Just like all these other TH-cam vids, they will show and tell you EVERYTHING about the game, and NEVER show you a desirable haircut before ,during , or at the end...because they want you to forget the cuts are horrible, or incomplete at best #facts
I understand it's more about the message than the quality of the video, I don't expect a masterpiece, but maybe think about a better microphone, or at least try to stop the cutting out/popping that happens quite frequently in the video. It not only distorts the audio but distracts from the message. Otherwise, good stuff
ksspang My apologies! You're absolutely right about the issues with the audio. Didn't realize the audio feed issues until after shooting, so I figured better to share it than to scrap the whole thing. Sorry for the distraction and thanks for watching!
it was an Ok video. but I only came from one certain point of view. in the black neighborhoods. the barbershop never left. so why did he leave in other neighborhoods is my question. maybe you should do a video on that
i think in many countries in the world the unisex salons became more fashionable and they were brainwashed by this. posh coffee, posh salons and ladies wi big assets.........it was all bullshit. nice to see they never left some places.
barber man the old timers say barbering died out because the Beetles bright a long hair style and the barbers didn't have the knowledge to cut them. So they started going to salons.

So very true!
I agree

This Master Barber is so down to earth, very refreshing to hear his thoughts. Thank you for sharing. 🙏
Yes, he is! Lots of wisdom to share. Thanks!
"Stay off your fuckin iPhone and talk to somebody."
Shorty is my new hero.

Awesome man hows the shop? Easier with one chair and no others ? or is it just more peaceful
Exactly, I don’t like having to put on a show with every hair cut.
Anyone noticed the scisors and cut thrugh razor like the compass and rulers of masons?
Amazing Barber . Great words . Inspires me to become a better barber and do more on my part for the client
I couldn't have said it better true talk from a master barber.
heard about Shorty in San Diego, thank you for interviewing him. great video
Found excellent insights on many things,.. It does matter in an understanding of a world grown smaller and closer.
Thanks Swapan!
Another great video, also great example in the beginning because I always say just do the same thing again to my barber.
Thanks Megaflubbie ! Glad you enjoyed it.

I like the logo on his work shirt reminds me of the freemasons..
Yes, I suppose it does!
Is he a freemason?
You dont have to be, I have that tatted

Do they also cut African-American hair?
No
'We know that you know that you can't look like Brad Pitt' :D
Exactly what my barber said to me.
Shahnaseeb Babar ha!
Good Man!
just came to see comments about the logo.
whats the difference between a barber and a master barber ?
A master barber has sticky hands

Masonic Barber! The Symbolism

I noticed that too.
I have that tatted and I ain't a free mason
