  • This powerful documentary reveals the tragic health problems suffered by children born within first-cousin marriages and explores the controversy surrounding this cultural phenomenon. A disproportionate number of rare recessive genetic disorders occur amongst those of South Asian and especially Pakistani descent and the programme investigates the science, political and social consequences of marrying your first cousin.

2 billion Muslims and 200 millions South Indian hindus don't have taboo with first cousin marriages. That doesn't mean that they have to marry cousins. Occasionally marrying cousins doesn't significantly impact genetic outcomes.
With modern technology simple genetic screening before marriage can mitigate almost most of its risks.
Pakistanis marrying their cousins is excessive they should widen their genetic spread consciously and where they do genetic screening should be the norm.
These kind of breathlessly dissing Muslim practices without nuance is habit of the white people.

So many children here have issues like this. I'm glad my grandfather, my father and us siblings married outside our family. Now ,the girl who had to abandon her studies at marriage , was taking care her child 24/7. Every time , I see her; I imagine , how her life would have been . @@snmalki2363 The genetics you share with your third cousin is miniscule, as it means you share a set of great great grandparents. You share about 0.075% of DNA on average. They've done studies on best friends, and they are statistically as related as about 4th cousins based on how much DNA they share on average. This makes sense when we more often than not befriend people who tend to look more like us and act like us. And if you go to some parts of the world where people are ethnically less diverse, they often share more DNA with each other than your average stranger. (Like Ashkenazi Jews, Japanese, etc.) In these situations people might not even be actual cousins, but because of the smaller genetic group, they share as much DNA as a distant relative would.
There really is no moral argument to be made about it at that point, because most 3rd cousins don't even know each other (as a single generation is about 25 years, so from the birth of your great great grandparents all the way until the birth of you is roughly 100 years) so the familiarity isn't there, and the genetic risk just isn't there unless your family regularly practices incest and have been doing it for generations lol.

Dr. Motulsky said medical geneticists had known for a long time that there was little or no harm in cousins marrying and having children. ''Somehow, this hasn't become general knowledge,'' even among doctors, he said.
Although the increase represents a near doubling of the risk, the result is still not considered large enough to discourage cousins from having children, said Dr. Arno Motulsky, a professor emeritus of medicine and genome sciences at the University of Washington, and the senior author of the report. www.nytimes.com/2002/04/04/us/few-risks-seen-to-the-children-of-1st-cousins.html#:~:text=They%20say%20there%20is%20no,people%20think%2C%20the%20scientists%20said.

@@darkorangesupercar743 there's always apologists and junk science. But Motulsky's observation might be correct, "only" a doubling of risk for otherwise unrelated first cousins. Problem is that there's often a lot of pre-existing inbreeding in those cultures, which means the inbreeding ratio can be closer to that of siblings than of first cousins. Also, there are other major problems with cousin marriage, such as that clan mentalities and clan relations are cemented, leading to more corruption and crime. And also, of course, that we should move away from arranged marriages, dowrys and all that junk.

If all generations were full siblings (rather than half), that would mean 1/4 common ancestry although only 1/4 common POSSIBLE genes - probably less By chance. When living in Bahrain, it was heart-breaking for me when my daughter's best friend was yanked out of school at age 13 to marry some old man in Pakistan. The headmaster tried his best, begging the father to let her finish her education and was met with a violent, spitting man, outraged that someone would stick their nose into marrying off a CHILD. It's going to take several generations and unfortunately, several dead or defective children before they begin to learn their lesson.

There’s enough unlucky people like your son who was born with cystic fibrosis, through no fault of either you or your husband, or your son. But for others to marry their first cousins knowing the risk, and then to have multiple children with serious genetic disorders requiring millions in health care over their lives, it’s just infuriating. If everyone was to start marrying their first cousins (yuck in my opinion), the health system would collapse. I feel like this practice is extremely selfish by them. The risk is that in every pregnancy there is a 75% chance of a perfectly healthy pregnancy. The odds were still in their favour that a subsequent child could be healthy, and they never accepted it was genetic.. the mother stated she thought the medical treatment caused his health issues, it was degenerative, he was normal at one point. So they thought it wasn't because of their genes at that point, still don't, so why not have another child?? Sometimes Drs are wrong, some people can have it explained to them over and over again and they still lack the comprehension to understand complex scientific issues, to them 'gods will' was part of why it happened. Not everyone in the world willingly accepts the belief systems we have.. their traditions dominate their understanding of the world over science, and their religion even denies the scientific advances we have made over the last 100 yrs.
In a family that doesn't support artificial birth control for religious reasons it can be difficult to make these choices based on the rare illness in one child. Their next pregnancy was twins, and sadly both were affected. Gods will, fate, or genetic, without education and birth control its not as simple as the way a western family with access to genetic counselling and IVF services might approach things. It would be difficult for a family like to this to approach a Dr for answers to their son's issues, no one said when it presented, when a genetic issue was established..
This situation could happen in many families, those with multiple children born prior to an olders one's medical diagnosis.. would you condemn them too? *Issues' in one child do not mean that every future child will share identical genetics and the same concerns.

Generally such marriages every 3 or 4 generations wont cause that much harm. The harm comes when the marriages start consistently keeping up with such: in other cases even such marriages can actually pass 'Good' traits to the offspring.
Though, it should be known that widely practicing such will lead to unintended consequences over many generations. So, I think you may be misunderstanding that such marriages are not causing these genetic defects themselves, but later down the line if it is to continue, that is when you see those defects.

You have to be educated enough to realize that you may potentially hurt your future kids , and if you're prepared to bare the consequences if they turn out disabled. It's beyond me how lightly those parents take things at all...how can you watch your kids suffer and still continue to claim that there's nothing wrong or the doctors are at fault?! Sickening! In 21st century you'd think that people would knows better but there you go....Poor kids! They don't deserve the life of suffering they got as a result of their parents' irresponsible decisions!

      2. 20:56 "My other brother he got marry with her sister and he got 5 children and all of them perfectly right" Wow your Brother played genetic roulette and got lucky its a game of chance, he married her sister and they weren't BOTH carriers of Mucolipidosis type IV, but I'm sure when your children marry his children you'll be in for a nasty surprise. As your healthy children have a 2/3 chance of carrying the allele, his children have a high probability of a 1/2 chance of being carrier. 1/3 of your children and their cousins children potentially will have Mucolipidosis type IV.

My mother is a doctor and has warned all of my cousins not to proceed with cousin marriages. Many of our uncles and aunts encourage cousin marriages despite knowing the consequences, and it absolutely disgusts me as they’re only putting their children in despair. They mostly encourage these inter-family marriage because they say they then know the other person better for their child than a stranger and were lucky not to have disabled children. In my belief, instead of being suspicious of the other stranger, they should just put their belief and trust in Allah.
