Norwegian is a bit of a pigeon / pidgin language, folks who know some English or German pick it up a bit more easily. What I like about studying in Oslo is that the city gives a lot of activity options for foreign students to know the city, history and culture and get to make new friends! Oslo is a very beautiful city so going outdoors will never be boring.
I’m an American (USA) international student in Norway and 😂😂😂😂. They left out the part where you’re sitting in the graduate room eating brown cheese and “crabsticks” trying to solve chemistry problems until 2am. Norway has been very nice to me though and the nature really is beautiful.....maybe could use a little more spice in the food and uhhh in the outward extroversion area haha. But I don’t mind being the one to talk to everyone first 😆. They are friendly but definitely nervous and awkward at first, really open when they get to know you though. Also as a side I’ve met many other foreign students here as an international student some of whom my country banned and I would never have the chance to meet. And in that way Norway has played a middle ground for people even from the multicultural US to meet others. The crabsticks and weird tubes of food though is an actual thing...also why black licorice...just why 😂
Can you please tell more about entering a uni there for ppl without Norwegian language skills? Personally, I'm interested in marketing but not able to find anything in english(
Anastacy Moongy i don’t know about marketing I am doing environmental engineering with a focus on water quality and water engineering. For me I just googled masters programs and found some. Not everything is in English. Almost all undergraduate (bachelors) will be norwegian only. Some masters programs are in English. I went to the specific schools I was interested in websites and looked there if they had the program I was looking for. Sometimes I had to translate the websites myself to find the English pages. After that I just sent my transcripts and such and waited. I will say that business and marketing (I used to work in that field in the USA before going back to school) tends to be something that when looking for a job you will have better luck if you go to school in the place you want to work in. So if you were looking to work in Norway in business and marketing you NEED to know Norwegian. Without question. But if you’re looking to just go to school and return to your native language country then it’s fine but also it will be easier to get employed back home in that field if you do school there. (If thay makes sense?). But yeah it’s different for engineering and science. I do plan to return to the USA after I am done which ofc changes my advice and experiences. : )

@@susanorr7451 I would personally agree. However, the woman from Canada seems to be able to find some correlation between the languages and it was able to help her to learn Norwegian. English, German, and Scandinavian languages are distantly related. Much more so than the Romance languages such as French. People say that many Norwegian words closely resemble English - as does the structure of the two languages. I was just having a little fun when she referred to the "Canadian" Language.
Due to me being an American of half Norwegian and German heritage, I loved the segment with the German student, 'cuz it appealed to both sides of my background!
I am amazed at how most Norwegians are able to speak English even though Norway is not an English speaking country. Even students from abroad feel comfortable living there without having to worry about language barrier. Even you guys, Ronald and Mads, speak English very fluently. 😃It's just amazing! Do Norwegians learn English from a very young age?
Thx a lot. We (Ronald and Mads) grew up with MTV and American movies that were not dubbed, and was taught english since early on in school. In Norway, English has been a subject for all pupils since 1969 and has been compulsory for all first graders since 1997. Best Mads :)

I would love the opportunity to study abroad in Norway. Unfortunately, i've heard it's extremely expensive for cost of living and I just don't have the funds to make it possible
I agree that there are lots of similarities between Norwegian and the "Canadian Language". For example "hvorfor" is like "wherefore" in old english. And "som" "like" "comme" in French, so yeah, in the end it's all the same, det samme, le même :) Totally Magotally Canadian.
yes that's how I initially remembered and learned too. Unfortunately now all the college French has dropped out of my head as I am always mentally translating in a Scandinavian language LOL
I can't wait to go 🥰 I plan on either going to finish school there as it makes the most sense for what I want for my career or just straight up move and work in Norway. I know it's a hard process, but some of the best connections I have had with people has been with Norwegians and I have really fallen in love with the landscape, culture and way of life. I also find the language easy for me to pick up as I can read some Swedish and speak English and having those bases makes a lot of it rather intuitive (as in things mean what I think they would most of the time)

As a Canadian I can’t speak Norwegian, however I have friends who are of Scandinavian decent who would manage very well. I wish to visit Norway someday because to a Canadian the weather and especially the winters, will make people like me feel very much at home.
Lovely video. (It did cut out a bit abruptly.) I went to university in the U.S. (a long time ago). Unfortunately, I did not know any language well enough to take classes in another country in anything other than English. Perhaps had I gone to Germany, my German would have evolved enough. I'm afraid I was too timid to see. As I've said before, I enjoy these videos and have come to learn so much about Norway. As others have said, you are a great ambassador for Norway (even in the videos where you have gentle fun with Norwegian habits). I was looking at schools in other countries this weekend (just for fun). That is why this video suddenly popped up.

I love that idea! But, all restaurants with out door seating have heat lamps, keeping their guests rather worm when it's cold outside, so I don't think we will get any discounts. Also, it's not allowed to give discounts on alcohol in Norway. If a bar does that, they can lose their right to serve alcohol.

Very interesting video !! I'm finishing my master degree in Computer science and after that I'd like to make a Phd in Norway because I like modernity, technology and nature !! And the cold for me is ESSENTIAL for my wellness !! I love too nature, high quality of life, low pollution and clean water ! And to live in a country where your personal space is respected is essential in my opinion !!

I need that my average grade to be B that is equivalent a very high grade in Italy, improve my English at C1 and make a perfect Thesis, all is mandatory to be accepted like a Phd student in Norway. I will start a PhD in February, by seeing this I think I have made a good choice, and I feel so lucky for being selected for the program. My only concern is the cold :c (I come from a place were temperatures are above 30-35 C).

Thx for your question. This is a paid job and we fronted the upsides this time (which gave us a new camera 📸 😊😊). We still are what you express. We are shy, introverted and living in the dark. But, at the same time, norway is not the worst place to go for a student or anybody else. Some really like it here. Like these students. Best Mads 😊

I had my Erasmus in Oslo and I find comments of those people pretty funny. Remember getting 500 EUR per month from EU which was enough to pay the rent for student housing (Kringsjå) but anything more was quite painful to buy (well maybe because I used 1000 EUR before even getting to Norway but still). Remember buying 20 kgs of Basmati rice from Arabic shop in Grønland and eating it almost everyday...I hate basmati now XD. Remember going to Rema or Kiwi and look on the price tag and then what that product is and how can I prepare it (First Price products and F Class bread were my best friends). Remember preparing my breakfast when the Sun was already down. Remember all those sober parties when only a few people could afford couple of beer cans. Remember drinking homemade wine made of FirstPrice Apple juice made by my friend and thinking it was great. Remember not getting any job because I couldn't speak norsk and they wanted my to be "Master in Norwegian" even to cultivate flowers. Remember shivering from coldness in my warmest snowboarding jacket. Remember smoking cigarettes bought on a tax free on a ferry to Denmark which I intended to sell for profit but everybody quit smoking because it was too expensive so I smoked it all while being stressed as hell of manace of failing even one of my final exams and had to pay back my uni 20 000 EUR (sic!). Gratefully I passed everything ^_^! Remember that "friendly" Norwegians always turned out to have latino ancestors. Remember having to pay for a cloakroom when entering the party and the second time when leaving it early (btw. Ronald tell me...was I scammed there or it is really that retarded custom?) Remember having to take a taxi from a party (because there was no night metro) and telling my travel partners how much left money I have and they saying it is not possible to survive for that little money to the end of the year. I remember depression, being poor like a hermit, a lot of homework and social isolation... ...but still remind myself those days with a happy tear in my eye because that Erasmus was so crazy nobody expected it and in that community of depressed students we tried to still have fun and laugh about it :D. I highly recommend going to Oslo for your studies - it teaches you to appreciate what you have at home like no other thing ;).
Haha, and this - ladies and gentlemen - is also a part of student life in Oslo! Norway is expensive. But I think it is easier to find work without speaking Norwegian these days. Your advices still work; First Price and Grønland is a must for students here saving money on food. Yes, I am sorry you were scammed... Love your story about being a foreign student in Oslo. Having been an exchange student to Denmark which was not a nice ( or happy) place I expected Norway to be the same only possibly even more exaggerated but my experience has been vastly different. Norwegians are more reserved but once they let you in you have a true friend. They are humble and kind and welcoming. I can’t see much similarities even though both are Nordic countries. Norwegians can also make fun of themselves. I think Norway is the best kept secret in Europe!

Interesting group looking forward to future eps. Maybe a happy spin on WW2 - if at all possible - why it all good in Norway now? I recently have an understanding of Nazi occupation - which is a soft word for extreme hardships of Norwegians from 1940 - 1945 NO LIFE. Canada allowed for two air-force training facilities, north of know as Little Norway in Toronto and moth of Toronto. Have feeling homogenized so a young German student doesn’t think about occupation of 75 years ago. As citizen of the USA I feeeel for the situations various indigenous people have had to coped with Too heavy??
Ronald is descended from indigenous Norwegian, specifically Sea Sami. I'm hoping they do a video about this some day. If you are interested in Sami culture there is a fantastic IG account of photo restoration, @colourmypast and on Facebook it's Colour Your Past. the fellow who runs it, Per Ivar Somby, is a fantastic historian and very modest about his considerable impact on preserving indigenous cultural heritage.

However here in Africa there’s no way I can do the Norwegian Language tests and this admissions requirement for all universities. Do you think I should first do one year language course in a Norwegian university and then apply the year after for medicine? How do you think I can meet this admission requirement?

But, all restaurants with out door seating have heat lamps, keeping their guests rather worm when it's cold outside, so I don't think we will get any discounts. Also, it's not allowed to give discounts on alcohol in Norway. If a bar does that, they can lose their right to serve alcohol.

I need that my average grade to be B that is equivalent a very high grade in Italy, improve my English at C1 and make a perfect Thesis, all is mandatory to be accepted like a Phd student in Norway.
So it is not easy but I want to invest my time and my energies for this goal !

I was a foreign exchange student to Tonsberg, in 1988-89, from the USA. It was the very best experience of my entire 50 years LOL I am very close with my family there, and am still fluent. Some of the new slang is lost on me though LOL

Thx for your question. This is a paid job and we fronted the upsides this time (which gave us a new camera 📸 😊😊). We still are what you express. We are shy, introverted and living in the dark. But, at the same time, norway is not the worst place to go for a student or anybody else. Some really like it here. Like these students. Best Mads 😊

I had my Erasmus in Oslo and I find comments of those people pretty funny.
Remember getting 500 EUR per month from EU which was enough to pay the rent for student housing (Kringsjå) but anything more was quite painful to buy (well maybe because I used 1000 EUR before even getting to Norway but still).
Remember buying 20 kgs of Basmati rice from Arabic shop in Grønland and eating it almost everyday...I hate basmati now XD.
Remember going to Rema or Kiwi and look on the price tag and then what that product is and how can I prepare it (First Price products and F Class bread were my best friends).
Remember preparing my breakfast when the Sun was already down.
Remember all those sober parties when only a few people could afford couple of beer cans.
Remember drinking homemade wine made of FirstPrice Apple juice made by my friend and thinking it was great.
Remember not getting any job because I couldn't speak norsk and they wanted my to be "Master in Norwegian" even to cultivate flowers.
Remember shivering from coldness in my warmest snowboarding jacket.
Remember smoking cigarettes bought on a tax free on a ferry to Denmark which I intended to sell for profit but everybody quit smoking because it was too expensive so I smoked it all while being stressed as hell of manace of failing even one of my final exams and had to pay back my uni 20 000 EUR (sic!). Gratefully I passed everything ^_^!
Remember that "friendly" Norwegians always turned out to have latino ancestors.
Remember having to pay for a cloakroom when entering the party and the second time when leaving it early (btw. Ronald tell me...was I scammed there or it is really that retarded custom?)
Remember having to take a taxi from a party (because there was no night metro) and telling my travel partners how much left money I have and they saying it is not possible to survive for that little money to the end of the year.
I remember depression, being poor like a hermit, a lot of homework and social isolation...
...but still remind myself those days with a happy tear in my eye because that Erasmus was so crazy nobody expected it and in that community of depressed students we tried to still have fun and laugh about it :D.
I highly recommend going to Oslo for your studies - it teaches you to appreciate what you have at home like no other thing ;).
Haha, and this - ladies and gentlemen - is also a part of student life in Oslo! Norway is expensive. But I think it is easier to find work without speaking Norwegian these days. Your advices still work; First Price and Grønland is a must for students here saving money on food. Yes, I am sorry you were scammed... Love your story about being a foreign student in Oslo. Having been an exchange student to Denmark which was not a nice ( or happy) place I expected Norway to be the same only possibly even more exaggerated but my experience has been vastly different. Norwegians are more reserved but once they let you in you have a true friend. They are humble and kind and welcoming. I can’t see much similarities even though both are Nordic countries. Norwegians can also make fun of themselves. I think Norway is the best kept secret in Europe!

Interesting group looking forward to future eps. Maybe a happy spin on WW2 - if at all possible - why it all good in Norway now? I recently have an understanding of Nazi occupation - which is a soft word for extreme hardships of Norwegians from 1940 - 1945 NO LIFE. Canada allowed for two air-force training facilities, north of know as Little Norway in Toronto and moth of Toronto. Have feeling homogenized so a young German student doesn’t think about occupation of 75 years ago.

Ronald is descended from indigenous Norwegian, specifically Sea Sami. I'm hoping they do a video about this some day. If you are interested in Sami culture there is a fantastic IG account of photo restoration, @colourmypast and on Facebook it's Colour Your Past. the fellow who runs it, Per Ivar Somby, is a fantastic historian and very modest about his considerable impact on preserving indigenous cultural heritage.

However here in Africa there’s no way I can do the Norwegian Language tests and this admissions requirement for all universities. Do you think I should first do one year language course in a Norwegian university and then apply the year after for medicine? How do you think I can meet this admission requirement?
