    The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
    The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
    With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

    Wow... just wow. The first word that comes to my mind when someone says "Fischer" is "Activity". So to see Spassky play so excellently... and to see Fischer unable to even complete development... in one of Fischer's trademark lines of the Sicilian...
    I think this game is the first game to really motivate me to study a PLAYER, not just just a game or an opening. I want to see some more of Spassky's games now.

      Fischer gets all the print but Spassky defeated one of the greatest of all time defenders , Petrosian , to become champ. He won the candidates seven times and he is the oldest living former world champ

    • @aubreystewart3772
      @aubreystewart3772 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I watch Spassky vs. Larsen every morning. There's something so satisfying about how he approached a hypermodern opening with a traditional, classical claim in the center, and then DECIMATED with his center control. I typically struggle facing a hypermodern opening, and am hesitant to claim the center. That game gives me confidence.

    What a great game! The whole Spassky Fischer series makes you think that Spassky kinda didn't deserve the title of World Champion in comparison to Fisher's level; until this game. In this game is when you actually see why Spassky was the World Champion; simply breathtaking.

    • @briant2140
      @briant2140 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's not forget that Spasky studied these poison pawn variations thourghly with Geller, the other guy, and who knows who else. Besides, I think it was Fisher's turn to be a gentleman by playing this line in the first place, since he was up by three points anyway.

  • @tan116A
    @tan116A 5 ปีที่แล้ว +153

    What an anti-spoiler quote. I read the quote above the board and thought that Fischer wins this game. And when Spassky pressured his queen, I thought here is where Fischer's brilliancy will come. And when Fischer lost the queen, I thought that this is some massive queen sacrifice because Fischer is about to win this game. And then, to my pleasant surprise, it was Spassky who won. What a roller-coaster ride this was :D

    • @EugeneOneguine
      @EugeneOneguine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, I got the same. From expectation to disapointement to hope to surprise.

    • @CleavingRay
      @CleavingRay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I realized Fischer was gonna lose because Botvinnik didn't use the word "so" making it "Fischer played brilliantly, so there is no shame in losing such a game" would imply Bobby won brilliantly.
      He used "and", and as such the phrase "Fischer played brilliantly, and there is no shame in losing such a game" is implying Bobby lost but he played brilliantly.
      Technicalities :P
      Still was nice to see Bobby beat in his favorite and strongest line. Makes you wonder...

    • @EugeneOneguine
      @EugeneOneguine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's funny because the move that made him lost was the one I wanted to play... the d4 pawn... I almost feel as if I'm the reason why Bobby lost. When agadmator said "but Bobby played d4" I was thrilled, then 5 seconds later "but this doesn't really work..." oh no, really ?

    • @SelfReflective
      @SelfReflective 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is Spassky's second win, and really, because the first game was marred by Fischer's madness, his only "real" win in this match.

    • @SelfReflective

      ChessNetwork/Jerry has more subs, but his videos get less views than Agad's. His upload schedule is also pretty unpredictable as he just posted a video 4 days ago, which was the end of a one month absence. Compare his review videos to Agad's; Jerry's have about 60k views, while Agad's vids always have 60k or more. Jerry's gameplay videos usually get 30k or less, and those vids account for a lot of his channel. In terms of growth in subs, Agad is dominating. When I first started watching him about a year ago, he had about 70k, and Jerry had almost 200k. And now Agad is has almost as many subs than Jerry (he recently reached 300k subs). I do prefer Jerry's style of reviewing games, but the community is better in Agad's lol

    After Larsen, Petrosian, and now Spassky, it was starting to feel like nobody could push Fischer around in a game. What a refreshing game this was! Spassky in control the whole time, and a wonderful attack on Fischer's queen.

  • @chrishimmelmann

    I recall replaying this game together with my dad during our holiday on Baltrum (smallest East Frisian island) in the summer of 1972. As often as possible, we’d get he newest paper searching it for a new game. I still remember how shocked I was at the black queen being trapped on the open board (well, that’s how it felt), and my dreams were literally haunted with that queen flitting about and trying to escape. Eventually, it was that match that brought me to playing chess competitively.

  • @arlekin1976
    @arlekin1976 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think Spassky saw that Fisher will offer the exchange of Queens and he wanted to refuse it by playing Qe3 to put his Queen on the same file as Fisher`s King but than having his Queen on the same diagonal with his King while Fisher has a black bishop would be dangerous. That`s why he played Kh1 imo.

    I remember watching this game, live with moves arriving via teletype, with commentary and analysis by Shelby Lyman, and probably with Edmar Mednis (who often was there helping analyze, and whose quote about this game you mentioned.) Though I was rooting for Fischer, it was good to see this match become competitive, at a time when Fischer was steamrolling all opponents.

    I feel bad for Spassky. When people talk about their favorite chess player of all time, it's always Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen, Tal, Capablanca, maybe Morphy or some other world champion, but never Spassky. He must have been a great player to achieve the rank of WC, but he's only remembered for being the final boss of the Soviets who was taken down by the American hero.

    @12:22 Why doesn't Fischer take the Rook on F1 with check? A Queen for a Bishop and a Rook isn't bad, right?

    Did Fischer blunder by taking the poisoned pawn in this game? Do chess engines say anything definitive about the folly of taking the poisoned pawn?

    Woah.. Spassky literally Crushed Fischer.!

  • @elasiduo108
    @elasiduo108 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion, this game proves that Fischer, being the great player he was, wasn't his best in unclear and crazy positions. In this game it looks he's constantly struggling to find a plan, and eventually Boris has him against the sword and the wall.

      Allegedly, disagreement over prize fund psy oyt with FIDE. Check out the Spassky v Fischer match wiki article for more details. However, in truth, he was afraid of losing to Karpov, who was much stronger than the old Soviet GMs even in 1975. Sadly, this has made Fischer's greatness be overestimated since he never defejded and lost his title as is common in chess. But again, this is my uneducated opinion.

    • @mubaraksenju7521
      @mubaraksenju7521 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nevertheless, karpov totally was a beast back then. Maybe Fischer is afraid or something, or maybe because of other reasons. I still remember one quote from karpov that he said "whenever i have the white pieces, i win". What a monster!!

    • @roberthansen5727
      @roberthansen5727 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He quit before Karpov - who expected to lose to Fischer - was named as challenger because FIDE wouldn't agree to his terms for a 'first to ten wins' unlimited match, which was a demand he required to be met to avoid a world championship match that was mostly drawn games.

    • @ytmndman
      @ytmndman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fischer wasn't afraid, he was just crazy and demanding. He nearly pulled out of the 1972 match tons of times despite being ahead just because his demands weren't being met.
