Surviving the endsieg as Japan is actually very easy compared to the German. There are some option you can choose to ensures Japan survive the endsieg like: 1. Spam anti-air, and block every single allied units from landing. 2. Send the main bulk of your armor from mainland to China to breakthrough the Chinese' s infantry line and launch a counter-attack.
Well, If you want to try. I can give you some trick in case you want to try it. For number 1: Spam anti-air around the southern coast of Japan. Build around 3-4 long range artillery to deal with the aircraft carrier and deal high damage to the landing craft. Make sure that *Nagasaki,Hiroshima and Osaka occupied* as sometime American or the Chinese paratrooper can drop their force into these city, trying yo get it back while keep up with your defense is a nightmare, so keep that in mind. Maintain your defense in China and, slowly but surely, beating back the Chinese force with your armor. Number 2: If defending the mainland Japan is too much, pull back all your troop to Korea and into China. Here you can choose to do 2 things: Defeat China or Launch an attack toward South East Asia. If you do the former, Gather up your Heavy Tank and grind down their infantry. Once their infantry is gone, start attacking their city, do it quickly as once the German are being defeated, the soviet will start training their troop in Siberia in response to the western allied in Europe. These unit will be sent into China to prepare for a battle against a supposedly Victorious-China and the American-occupied Japan. If the Soviet troop (or the Allied in general) is too much. Gather your troop and attack southern China immediatly and reinforce Bangkok.

If you really want to preserve Manstein life: The 1st path: Make sure that your artillery have destroy at least 70% of the enemy's fleet first. If you put on a general too early, he will die instantly on the next turn by enemy's fleet. 2nd path: Same thing, clear out most of the Chinese infantry unit first, especially those who do high damage to the tank like "Assault Infantry" and "Commando", capture most of the city with the airfield and put up an anti-air on your Manstein to decrease Air damage. Finally, make sure your general are far enough from the sea. Those aircraft-carrier will come to haunt you again if your general are within their range since your general are their 1st priority. Personally, I would send my less powerful General 1st to destroy the enemy's spearhead and summon my main General later for the push up.
