It's really nice to hear a guitar demo that doesn't go from clean to extremely distorted. It's nice to hear this guitar in a great amp with a little bit of dirt. Thanks for a great demo!
This review is great - thank you! I was very lucky to pick up one of these today!! As a 49 yr old woman with the world's smallest hands, this is the most comfortable guitar I've ever had. I feel at long last, there's a great guitar out there for those of us - men as well as women, who have small hands - and I have VERY SMALL hands!!! At last, challenges are handled with ease! The SG isn't a guitar I've considered before as I wasn't so keen on the look compared with 60s/70s Fenders. Finally I decided to put looks to one side and go for playability and what a good decision. This particular model does have its own vintage charm with the Vibrola and I love it! For anyone stumbling across this comment, let me repeat, if you have small hands, this guitar is it!!! I wish I'd had one of these years ago!
I've had this since 2021,a used as new with a great set up and it's my go to electric!!i have 31 guitars and this is my go to almost every time!! i was shocked how well it stays in tune while using the vibrola!❤,i have a gibson sg standard and with the exception of the headstock😢,this is every bit as good as it!!i got it for £330!! couldn't be happier!
Love sg's with the vibrola. Adds a little something to the tone i think. Owned 2 other sg's as well as an epi with the regular stop bar and they kick ass as well but when your playing clean to crunch is where i notice the difference the most. Cant wait to try some of these new epis
I’m glad I’m not the only person who will start a decent rhythm idea and then is like “yeah idk where this is going” I’m not knocking your playing at all though! Good review 🤙🏼 keep rocking
Alfredo Guevara I LOVE FRANK Zappa! I saw Dweezil Zappa Play all on the same day his dad Frank played there back in the day. He called that tour Zappa Plays Zappa. It was awesome. They have a Gibson Frank Zappa model duplicated from his SG. It was too expensive but looked awesome.
I bought a new/used 2005 Epi SG G-400 1965 RI which is basically this same guitar, less the neck binding. I owned a 1968 vintage SG Special and my Epi out shined it in every way. The neck on my 68 was like a pencil! So, if this can stand up to my 05 Epi, I don’t see how players wouldn’t like it. The only part I replaced was a roller bridge and sure enough...it stays well in tune, even if you lay into the Maestro tremolo. I’ll never sell mine.
Had mine since it came out a few years back. Wasnt sure at first, but with a decent set of 9s on it and a rough setup, totally different guitar. Sounds better than I thought a cheaper SG would
Trukin' Hairball I’m tempted to do a video showing how it stays in tune. All I did was apply some nut sauce first three nut slots as added lubrication, then stretched the strings good and wallah. Unlike the $2000 SG with maestro that I owned that never stayed in tune.
I have this in the olive drab. Love it. I saw another 61 no vibrola in faded Pelham but i already have the special in the faded Pelham…I’ll probably get it.
Just recently tried a maestro vibrola. It’s about as stable as my strat’s bridge. I didn’t expect a glorified money clip to be usable, but life is full of surprises
Really enjoying your last few videos Mike. I want this guitar! I really like your playing style, even though you say it sucked (still way better than me) haha. Could you give me the name of a few of the songs you were riffing on in this demo? I’m still much more comfortable playing acoustic but am trying to expand. I need some new stuff to work on and love the blues rock style. Thanks my man. Keep up the good work
thanks for the video man great video of the guitar sounds really really nice especially through that fender amp so the best of luck with it the ceiling us, Bob the blind bedroom guitar
I love everything about it except that terrible veneer. Either use good wood or show off your bad wood, Epiphone. But you can't possibly have every single piece of mahogany look EXACTLY the same without faking it.
@@granvillefriel1877 Hey, why does the cheaper, faded SG classic by Epiphone doesn't use a veneer? Each one I've seen looks great. Epiphone can definitely do the '61 SG without a veneer.
Awesome Mike《☆》👍🏾🛎The stripe effect of the wood peices glued together is cool & the solid red border really sets it off. Don't fret. I still own this guitar and by having it setup properly, It never goes out of tune. It's a solid guitar that will last you a lifetime. Just my opinion.

I think im going to get one of these the 3rd. It’s crazy im going to get an epiphone instead of a gibson but I’ve seen a bunch of these reviews and it’s just a good guitar at a great price. The vibrolla is supposed to be better than the gibson which obviously has issues. This one can stay in tune.
No your not crazy about Epiphone vs. Gibson. It's changed now with Ceaser the current head honcho at Gibson. Honestly the Epiphone inspired by Gibson guitars are what $1500 Gibsons used to be. The quality is incredible.
@@MikeFromNashville i did get one and it is amazing! I haven’t put it down since i got it pretty much. I absolutely love it. I couldn’t be happier. It has great puck ups too.
Hello, Thank you for your service. No neck dive on this model. I think the weight of the Maestro Trem adds more weight to balance. Also, if you do have an SG that the neck dives, you can find a larger padded guitar strap. Or, wider guitar strap that should help prevent the neck dives. Thanks for watching. This is amazing. Nice review. '75 I buy a '64 Std. Took the pickup covers off and though the tone changed (more mids, less highs) it looked just like Blair Thornton's axe from Not Fragile. Would I do that to this Ep ?. Yep.
I love it! If you have it setup correctly this never goes out of tune. My first love when learning guitar was surf rock. So you can say I love the whammy bar.
I am so torn between this (in OD Green) and the Epiphone Flying V, anyone with experience have any advice? They seem to be about a horse apiece as far as pickups, neck shape, and overall tone.
Carlos Hdz. Escamilla I don’t think so. This is a great question. Based on all of the pick guard upgrading I have done I’d lean on the no unless it’s custom. You would have to add screw holes and I’m honestly not sure. I would need to research this.
Mike From Nashville Actually I have a Les Paul but years ago I had a SG PRO with the big pick guard and I wanted to put the vibrola on it, but sadly I had to buy my SG☹️. And now that Epiphone is selling this “new” model, I really wish to have that SG that I always wanted. Thanks for responding !
How do you mean “Careful with the whammy”? Do you mean does it go out of tune? No, not on mine. I stretch the strings good and put nut sauce on the grooves of the nut. I’ve owned a Gibson SG with a Maestro Vibrato and could never get it to stay in tune for some reason.
@@SloppyLarry The Vibrato bar or Whammy bar is designed on guitars to pivot up and down. Some models the bridge will rock a bit. Or on a Stratocaster they have what’s called a “Floating Bridge”. This is a bridge that is pulled by springs on the other side of the guitar allowing the bridge to appear as if it’s floating. With a tremolo bar or “Whammy Bar” as they are called as well, the bridge will rock when you push and pull the Tremelo bar. I hope this helps. David El Erizo I literally have been playing this the last hour. No the frets are even, no dead spots no buzz. The pickups are punchy. I love this guitar.
I did. He’s awesome. I know he mentioned it had a high Fret. Did he actually measure that? I missed that. I’d be bummed not to own my SG if I saw Troggleys Vlog and decided not to buy one. I mean I love his show. It’s just that the guy opens 5 guitars, doesn’t play them but inspects them and has complaints because he had a high fret. I think that’s great because we as consumers expect to get what we pay for. Even if it’s less expensive. So it’s great he goes through guitars with a fine tooth comb but I would try one out and return it if it’s not for you or you feel there are quality issues. Most places that sell this guitar have a great return policy. My guitar plays amazing. No high frets. I’m really happy with it. I hope you check one out to see for yourself. Thanks brother!
Is it worth it to you? That’s the question. If you only like it because the way it looks and won’t use it, is it worth the extra money? That’s up to you. Basically if the look of it not the functionality is a must have because that’s what you love then spend the extra money. If not, save the cash and just get one without a vibrato. I don’t have any tuning issues and I use it on mine.
Eric Filsinger I hear ya man. Everyone has what they like. I’m really happy for the price point on this guitar. I love the feel of the neck and the punchy pickups. I feel like I’m playing a more expensive guitar than what is going for. It’s great but I dig yeah man. Everyone has what they like about a guitar.
@@shckltnebay And they aren't adding veneers to the SG Classic Faded - these are all 2 piece bodies and they look great (it's just that I really don't like the looks of the faded finish). Doesn't make any sense.
I bought one but as soon as I saw those awful veneers on the back and front it went straight back. Plenty of guitar manufacturers who make cheaper copies than Epiphone book match the wood properly so why does Epiphone insist on using veneers.
Looks great except for the body. Looks cheap with the edges showing no wood grain. I would re-paint it all one color. Other that that, love the retro look.
It is kinda lame. At first I didn’t care. I still kinda don’t care because I love playing it but yeah, as time has gone on I think to myself “What the heck were they thinking with that!?”
I have owned this guitar for a couple years no. I play surf rock on it and rock the vibrato and she stays in tune. I added some nut sauce and stretch the strings real good. No problem.
Kaleb at Mathews Guitar Works Sorry Kaleb. I try my best to present the tone as best as I can. If a guitar has muddy pickups pickups even with a nice amp or a nice reverb pedal it won’t make it sound great. I thought using the 65 Deluxe with a little reverb would be the best way to show you what this guitar sounds like. Sorry to let you down man.
Mike From Nashville One, Sarcasm is difficult to project in writing. Two, You have a Deluxe REVERB, no need for a reverb pedal. Your demo was good, just doing some joking poking critique.
Kaleb at Mathews Guitar Works I hear ya. I agree 100% but... Channel 1 sounds different then channel 2 with the reverb. To my ears Channel 1 without the reverb circuit has a fuller sound which is why I used a reverb pedal. I was hoping to get a pure sound with some reverb and that was my attempt. :)
Never liked the Epiphone wood grains. They always looked cheap. And the spring steel in that Maestro is inferior in qiuality to units from the past. Same with the metalurgy in the tailpiece & saddle arrangement.
Tony smith Bummer man. I know it bothers some people. It doesn’t bother me. It like the way it feels and sounds when I play it. I guess people tend to buy guitars to look at them and not play them. That’s cool. Everybody has their own deal.
Mike From Nashville well that’s pretty messed up to talk like that to someone you don’t even know. So someone can’t appreciate the feel tone and look of their guitars? It’s one or the other? This is my first time watching you ur videos but it’s the last time because you become a passive aggressive douche when someone disagrees with you
Skyler Springsteen Wow. Sorry you felt I came off that way. I was just being honest. There are collectors that really just look at guitars as art and that’s cool. I wasn’t trying to put him down. I was generalizing. Sorry I offended you. Take care.
Skyler Springsteen Ouch, I just saw at the end of your message you accused me of “being a passive aggressive douche when someone disagrees with me” well, you took what I wrote in a way I did not intend. So it’s ok for you to disagree with someone and call then a passive aggressive douche? So it’s ok for you to call someone you don’t know and interpret what they are saying then insult them? That’s not very nice.

Most places that sell this guitar have a great return policy.
My guitar plays amazing. No high frets. I’m really happy with it. I hope you check one out to see for yourself. Thanks brother!
@@MikeFromNashville Looks like you got a lucky one, cheers!
Nice overview.
Fawkes & Hound Thanks! I’m glad you liked the video.
is the vibrola really worth 100 more dollars? i love the look with the vibrola but 449$ for the 61 sg without it or 549$ with it idk...
I wish they would sell the vibrola by itself so I can add it to my 2020 white batwing sg
Make one in BLACK Epiphone!!!
That red veneer with painted edges looks awful and fake!
how far does the vibrola go down?
I can dive it pretty hard and it stays in tune.
Whats the price?
Because you never use the Maestro Vibrola lever?
I just cant get past the veneer top, and the sides being left out, YIKES. I watched Troglodytes vid on this and its much more noticable
@@MikeFromNashville Its too bad, they didnt do that on the earlier ones, why now?
@@shckltnebay And they aren't adding veneers to the SG Classic Faded - these are all 2 piece bodies and they look great (it's just that I really don't like the looks of the faded finish). Doesn't make any sense.
I hate that veneer but I also love it
It’s not that I don’t like the veneer, it’s just horrible and the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The tone is great though.
A burgundy finish and gold hardware on this guitar would be great
That would look pretty cool.
Love the idea of a vibrola on an Epi. It seems to me that a guitar named “solid guitar” should be solid. That veneer looks horrible imho. Too bad
Wow that's a very nice Guitar this year Epis will destroy all those knock offs like Ltd
Granville Friel I haven’t tried any of the knock offs but great point.
super late but THAT WAYNE KRAMER STRAT
The Wayne Kramer Strat is awesome!!
I bought one but as soon as I saw those awful veneers on the back and front it went straight back. Plenty of guitar manufacturers who make cheaper copies than Epiphone book match the wood properly so why does Epiphone insist on using veneers.
These are supposed to have a nitro finish. Does it have a vanilla scent to it?
Where the F did you read that?
I believe Epiphone uses poly on all their
shiny finishes
Eddie Gutierrez No, this model doesn’t have a nitro finish. Maybe the Gibson SG does.
@@MikeFromNashville 99% of Gibsons have a nitro finish, ZERO % of current production Epiphones do
Eric Filsinger That’s ok. I don’t care about nitro finishes on an Epiphone. I just play it and like what I hear. For the price It’s a great value.
Looks great except for the body. Looks cheap with the edges showing no wood grain.
I would re-paint it all one color. Other that that, love the retro look.
ibberman Wow, I would have never noticed that. It’s amazing what some people see and some people don’t. Thanks for sharing.
Doesn’t look that way up close . Edges do show grain
Sure is pretty
How do you think it would be to play with a slide on this guitar?
It’s a great neck for it. Raise the action a bit and your in business.
If they would just not add the veneer. Doesn't look natural. Biggest reason I haven't bought an LP Junior.
It is kinda lame. At first I didn’t care. I still kinda don’t care because I love playing it but yeah, as time has gone on I think to myself “What the heck were they thinking with that!?”
@@MikeFromNashville they should have stuck to solid colors if worried about the multiple piece bodies.
It says burstbucker pickups
I hope that watch isn't mechanical. You're practically touching it to a strong magnet lol
Thanks for the like, I subscribed to your channel. I really like the guitar
I hear that after a few uses of the tremolo it loses its tuning slightly. Not a good sign. Glad i didnt bid on the one i saw on ebay. Not for me 👎
I have owned this guitar for a couple years no. I play surf rock on it and rock the vibrato and she stays in tune. I added some nut sauce and stretch the strings real good. No problem.
You lost me at... “I’m playing through a ‘65 Deluxe Reverb and let me turn on this big sky...” 🤦
Mike From Nashville
One, Sarcasm is difficult to project in writing.
mucho pan para poco salame
Never liked the Epiphone wood grains. They always looked cheap.
And the spring steel in that Maestro is inferior in qiuality to units from the past. Same with the metalurgy in the tailpiece & saddle arrangement.
Yeah I don’t like the wood grain in this. It plays good though.
Not in left handed. Too bad.
None of the Epiphone Sgs suck
I was so disappointed I sent my back because those veneers are awful.
