      Frame stiffness is indirectly proportional to Wallet Lightness

      Global Cycling Network - All the usual buzzwords....Stiffer, more comfort, tweaked geometry. The bikes are nice looking but in reality how much different is it for us mortal riders. Maybe we are just reaching the age where less and less can actually change as we perfect the technology.

      Bound to be a new one along soon - your R2 is an old R3 with the 'Mud' fork unless I'm mistaken.

      My 2016 R2 was cracked in less then 6 months, without any crashes or external impacts.... Cervelo offered to let me buy a new frame for 1800 dollars on a 2500 dollar bike... never again Cervelo.
      So much for supporting Canadian, eh?

    whoops. Just bought this R5 version for 750Euro 2nd hand from a friend. With 2 years of milage.
    I'm a bit hyped... finally making my cervelo dream true (after 12+ years of riding road bikes)!

    nice. i particularly like that the slopey tubes at the back, join the more upright tube that the seatpost goes into, at the right place.

    I just picked up a r2 with ultegra group set. The cervelo rep in my area said there isn't a difference between the r2 and r3 frame. The forks only have a 15 gram difference. So far I'm loving it.

    Looks amazing and I imagine they feel amazing to ride as well. My last year of racing as a junior was back in 2008 where I rode the r2, which is the one that was used to win Paris-Roubaix. It was the best bike I ever raced. Had it equipped with full Campagnolo Chorus 10 speed and Fulcrum Racing Speed wheels for dry conditions, Racing 0 for wet and rough conditions (used those for Paris Roubaix junior) both sets were tubulars.
    My current bike feels about the same but seeing as the cervelo was 5 years earlier I think that speaks to how great a frame it really was and I would probably be like a kid on christmas if I got to ride those new bikes.

    I have the 2014 version of the R5 and have been thinking of disc brakes for my next bike. The new R5 with discs seems expensive (especially when compared to Canyon, for example) and the new R3 looks cheap (and shiny) - plus it seems that the R3 disc version is not available yet. Would be good if GCN could do a "real world" comparison between the C Series and the R Series - many of us don't race and, if I am going to spend Cervelo-type money on a new bike, I would want that bike to be the "go to" bike for as many types of riding conditions as possible.

    Did all the marketing guys at the bike manufacturing companies recieve the exact same bullsh*t manual when graduing from some occult bike marketing academy? "Our new bike is now [0-25]% stiffer in [insert frame section] and [0-25]% stiffer in [insert another frame section] while being [0-15]% more comfortable and saving you [0-30] watts at the same speed." - If any of this was true, my 10 year old bikes should have the structural integrity of slightly overcooked noodles, and the comfort roughly equal to a Judas cradle. :-(

      its the washing powder school of marketing. if you go back to the 1970s, you would find washing power got whites 100% spotless and white, esp compared to the 100% spotless gleaming white of the 1960s which was actually more yellowy. and yet every year since has seen remarkable leaps forward in white technology. todays powders get clothes 1000s of times whiter. and in the future your whites will be ever more white too. there is no limits to such marketing, i mean tech

    So how much of this stiffness is coming from just merely using the mountain-bike-style larger diameter skewers/axles? I mean, yeah, any frameset with those is going to be stiffer from what I have seen, but... who in the hell wants to deal with them for regular exercising and flatting out? If I was a canyon-carver racing down hills I might want the added stiffness they bring... but... hell, I used to do that with very flexible bikes. I love the thought of them, but certainly don't want to be dragging along that large of an allen-key/wrench for when I have to change a tube out.

      I used to work in a shop that sell Cervelos, they do it intentionally having done a past survey of their average customers and finding around 80% already had their own wheels they would put on a new bike anyway. Thus they decided to try and cut overall price with cheap wheels.

      thechosendude
      If you're talking about the improved stiffness numbers, a material can be over 100% stiffer than another. The numbers are relative to each other. For example steel has a Young's Modulus (number related to stiffness) of around 200 GPa while aluminum has a Young's Modulus of around 70 GPa. This makes steel almost 200% stiffer than aluminum.

    • @waynosfotos
      @waynosfotos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ziyad Kara Yeah your right it is playing with numbers, I personal don't believe it, All these watts and stiffer here there and everywhere, we would almost not need to pedal with all these improvement! Hahahaha

    • @shirleymorris5561
      @shirleymorris5561 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wayne proud even if they are stiffer, more compliant in number terms as measured in a lab, the big question is: is any of this perceptible to the average rider? plus is it really necessary? are the bikes not stiff enough already for most riders?

      People probably said the same thing about improved bikes back in 1920s, 30s, 40s, etc..... I will take the modern bike thanks.
