SAMBA OMAR MAPANGALA Samba is one of the many artists who left Zaire to look for new audiences in East Africa, mainly Kenya and Tanzania. He was born in the village of Matadi, in Bas Zaire around 1955. He started his musical journey in 1968, learning from an old friend called "Mzee Tinapa" and after two years, Samba left him in good faith to try and form his own band. In late 1969 he formed a band under the name of La-Lune and managed to release a few records while still in Kinshasa. With no finance and nobody to back him, his partners left him, but with great confidence in music, he formed another band under the name La-Bariza and again his partners left him for the same financial problems. I guess courage and confidence is one thing that really held Samba in one piece. He then met with musicians who were determined and had faced more or less the same problems and formed another band known as "The Super Tunika" which afterwards in 1977, rebranded to "Les Kinois" (The Kinshasans) . Les Kinois also had it's own shortcomings and come 1981, the sun set on the band. This brought about the birth of Orchestre Virunga, the band that was named after the "Virunga volcano" located in the Congo. Orchestra Virunga released their first album, "It's Disco Time with Samba Mapangala" in 1982. In the early 1990s the group gained some international popularity through album releases like "Virunga Volcano" and "Feet on Fire". From then on, we can attest that Samba Mapangala & Virunga have notably done justice to RHUMBA in East Africa and beyond for a record 40 years and counting.
