    Great video, agree that DKIM should get it's own video, but I think you did a pretty good job of explaining SPF.
    I also run my own mail server using iredmail and while it doesn't apply auto updates, you are notified via your email when patches are available for the system. SSL cert's for webmail are also provided and kept current using letsencrypt and also provides activesync! OSS FTW!

    I have a Linux Ubuntu CCTV server how do you recover from a kernel stack error? It won't reinstall Linux just a boot loop. I don't want to format because it 6 weeks to get it working to that point. My other Linux box won't contact a wired or wireless connection any more no matter what I do.

    What about encrypting your emails on the VPS server? Also, 30 buckaroos per month just for the Email server is way too much. Maybe if I did it for a small business company, but then I'd rather host it on the server that is local.

    I'd rather cut out the hosting middle man & save some quids to run a server from home. I'm currently playing around with Ubuntu Server, LAMP & Nextcloud. working pretty well so far.
    Next steps will be to get SSL configured and install Webmin. I'll also be hosting my own website with wordpress.
    I'm by no means an expert. I see this as a little fun DIY project. Thankfully there's a plethora of tutorials on the Web, to make it easy for anyone.

    Hi Wendell, very good and content you have here. Thank you. I use Inmotion for a while, they are really good. QQ: For many time i never use the e-mail in my own server for many reasons, one is because take a lot of resources, two: if for some reason you need to migrate the server sometimes can be a problem. 3: Is not too friendly with users like my wife who need e-mail in the phone and computer synchronized. Any suggestion to solve this? Thanks.

    I admire people who admin email servers... It really sucks! we lost email services for like 3 hours and the entire company (globally) was falling a part. Not joking I work for a telecom vendor we build and sell Voip and Data products and ironically we all avoid to call others and one day for unknown reasons for me emails stopped working... it was chaos! I was forced to talk to people and be social and say things like "hi, how are you? hey how're your kids?" to get work done.

    The best way to set up an email server is to get a google mail account. Set your mx records to point at google and then relax. Unless you enjoy being blacklisted and having all your mail get caught in spam filters.

  • @DanielLopez-up6os

    But what happens when you restart to apply and update and receive an email? does it get lost? does it have somekind of buffer or cache?

    • @DanielStinebaugh
      @DanielStinebaugh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      email is smart enough to retry for up to several days. Also there's something called "greylisting" used as an anti-spam technique where even on a valid server receiving a valid email, rejects the first attempt and will wait for the resend before it's allowed through to your inbox as alot of spambot's won't bother retrying an address that's failed already.
      email's pretty robust, it's been around the wringer a few times :)

      mailcow is your best bet.
      It includes Sogo or Roundcube, which have much nicer interfaces than Horde, and Activesync notifications by default (if you go for Sogo).
      All you have to do to install it is run the install script on the server.

    • @DanielStinebaugh
      @DanielStinebaugh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ISPconfig is AWESOME! But probably overkill for just email, and not nearly as trivial to setup as this video's solution.

    • @ugurugutugu
      @ugurugutugu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Stinebaugh I mentioned it more like an idea for another video. but it is same overkill like cpanel. I personally use debian+postfix+dovecot+spamassasin+mysql+apache2+roundcube. but it's little more complicated than click in cpanel. not to mention poor cpanel compatibility with debian

    I honestly cannot imagine what I'd need an e-mail server for, or what would make it worth the hassle to take care of it myself. Well, I suppose it's possible it has gotten easier in later years, but I'd say that's on a need to know basis, and I do not need to know.
    So, respectfully, tl;dw ;)

      The Ignorant Philosopher
      I've had one at home for like 10 years. We already ran the box as a file server and router, so the cost was just a domain name.
      Since setting it up, the only care and feeding has been running apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. Takes like a minute each fortnight.

    • @theignorantphilosopher4855
