  • Last Thursday, literary luminaries and social leaders from around the country gathered at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan to honor Toni Morrison, one of the nation’s most influential writers. She died in August at the age of 88 from complications of pneumonia. In 1993, Morrison became the first African-American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her classic work “Beloved.” Much of Morrison’s writing focused on the black female experience in America, and her writing style honored the rhythms of black oral tradition. In 2012, President Obama awarded Morrison the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ta-Nehisi Coates, Edwidge Danticat and Oprah Winfrey were among those who spoke about Toni Morrison’s life and legacy. We air Oprah’s eulogy.

It is shameful that DemocracyNow! pushes Oprah to honor Toni Morrison, and make her last speaker!! Oprah reads a passage by Toni Morrison that subverts Morrison's idea of how we abuse the planet, only Oprah takes it out of context and urges us to abuse the planet and then pass that abuse on! Then Oprah brags about how it is important for the rich to be waited on by the poor, and urges "gallantry," with the reference to kings and queens. How DemocracyNow! could stoop this low and include these miserable kinds of Oprah billionaire values in understanding Toni Morrison. Their reporting is the ugly of what DemocracyNow! is becoming. They do this on a sneaky consistent basis and shows me how out of touch they are with the impoverished masses and people on the street. DemocracyNow! is becoming part of the privileged, part of the elite, and it's disgusting..

@@yanyu8989 Not quite. But just having enough money with the books they publish and their very wealthy contacts more and more often tempts them to forget their roots. Praising anyone with Oprah's money while I have to go around with lunch boxes to feed the poor on the streets is clear evidence to me that DemocracyNow! has forgotten its roots.

@@yanyu8989 DemocracyNow! still has some unique news worth watching. One big event which they actually go to and cover live is The Paris Accords on climate change. I have learned so much from DemocracyNow! on climate change, their following of Greta Thunberg, their interviews with Extinction Rebellion, NASA's Director, Green Peace, and so many others on this critical issue of our time. They are right on on climate change.
