Making comparisons reveals/pinpoints much, is instructive..but I think no matter were Denys & Hashimoto to progress in every way possible - individually or as partners...they wouldn't become the 'same as' - identical or 'equal to' Markarova & Baryshnikov. And what would be sacrificed of their own character, inspiration & impulse? Even peering through the degraded images of M. & B., one discerns acute & subtle genius: in motion, in stillness, in transition - inimitable selves being in this music in those moments. D & H are lovely dancers indeed; their performance fluid, suggestive, worthwhile, very enjoyable. They're simply not Makarova and Baryshnikov.
