I always keep my pointer finger under the tape measure as it slides back into the housing......that way it stops on the cushion of my finger....then I let it in the remaining 3/4" .....reducing the stress put on the end hook of the tape......helps to get more life out of a helpful tool.

I haven't tried this myself so I can't confirm it would work, but it seems like you could use the method used to tension up a window shade, which would be much easier. Essentially you would extend the tape out, open up the case and then manually put a few wraps around the drum, rather than winding it, which essentially would offset the end point by the amount of the additional wraps. Hope this makes sense and someone can try it!

A very good video. I bet you learned a few new words the first few times you did this. :

I don't get why 13 people (and counting) would vote down a video showing how to fix a tape measure, what more did they want?
If it's because it's Festool and they're haters, I've got news for you it's made by BMI, an excellent German company that makes all sorts of measuring devices, and the only brand I buy.
I've got this version from Festool as it was cheaper then BMI were selling it at the time.

I would have been a lot easier to reassemble if you didn’t spray silicone in the first place! 😂 Good job!

Festool did not design or manufacture this tape. It is made by BMI with Festool's name on it. My understanding is that it was meant as a brand promotional item but was so popular that Festool added it to their line.

Risky Birdness That explains it. Everything I've bought from Festool has been top quality.
