    Is it true that you can keep mourning geckos and dart frogs in the same enclosure? If so what size enclosure would you think it best to keep them in? Also what dart frog species would do best with Mourning geckos if they can be kept together?

    • @joshsfrogsvideos5594
      @joshsfrogsvideos5594 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      It is true! It depends on how many of each you have, but you'd most likely want at least an 18x18x18. You can do most of the larger species - tinctorius, auratus, or leucomelas :) It's just important that they're introduced when they're both young so they can acclimate better.

    • @joshsfrogsvideos5594
      @joshsfrogsvideos5594 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends, a bit, on what kind of frog you plan to house in the tank. Taller vivaria are great for species of frog that enjoy climbing, like our various tree frogs, smaller dart frogs (like thumbnails), and even our bigger darts sometimes enjoy a bit of a vertical climb; however, frogs like our Solomon Island leaf frogs, Pacman frogs, and our bumblebee toads, don't utilize vertical space very much at all and would prefer more horizontal space to wander all over--or, in the case of Pacman frogs, burrow in. Dart frogs still won't hang out right around the top of their tanks as often as other frog species, though, so if kept in a tank that also has one or two Mourning Geckos in it, the geckos tend to get a lot more use out of that vivarium's height.
      Similarly, different frogs have different space needs if they're kept in groups. Our thumbnail dart frogs only need about 5-7 gallons of personal space per frog in a vivaria, whereas any of our larger darts need closer to 10 gallons of space in the tank per frog, for them to be comfortable. A 20-gallon tank can house about 1-3 dart frogs comfortably, or 3-4 thumbnail darts.
      Tree frogs and other species bigger than our largest dart frogs tend to need even more space (slight exception being Pacman frogs again, which are sit-and-wait predators with less need for a large territory) per frog. You would want closer to a 30-gallon size for 2-4 of the following: Amazon Milk Frogs, or Red-Eyed Tree Frogs, or Borneo Eared Frogs, or Mossy Frogs, or Tonkin Bug-Eyed frogs, or Solomon Island Leaf frogs. (Don't mix species, though; it's a bad idea. Also don't put mourning geckos with frogs bigger than dart frogs, because they might get eaten.)

    • @joshsfrogsvideos5594
      @joshsfrogsvideos5594 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We do not currently work with copper cheeked frogs. All of the frogs we sell are captive bred and the dart frogs are specifically non poisonous. Thinks like milk frogs and many toads will always have the potential to be toxic with enough harassment. In regards to moving frogs, it is always important to firmly hold the frog without harming them. One way to do this is by holding around the pelvis with the legs extended to prevent them from jumping around.

      In the dart frog hobby, morphs are actually separate populations/collection points/imports of frogs, and should be kept separate. They have different adult sizes, rates of growth, and levels of aggression. They may also hybridize. For these same reasons, we recommend keeping species separate.

      Leucomelas do wonderful in groups. They are generally the best dart frog when you are looking to have several in a viv. Just ensure it is easy for the frogs to get out of the water. Dart frogs are not swimmers and can get ex-hosted very quickly and possibly even drown.

    • @Crusher-ih9us
      @Crusher-ih9us 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @joshsfrogsvideos5594

      I would suggest a slope that is less than 30 degrees and the plants will always help. Making this type of slope along wherever the land meets the water will help to ensure the frogs can easily get out of the water. This will greatly reduce the possibility of drowning.

  • @MarcusK1

    I have many questions considering light I couldnt get answered through my Google search... Something like how do I hide the ugly lightbulbs? What kind of light do frogs need? Is UV light necessary or is it enough to light it once a week for half an hour? And if so where should I place it? I want to make a 90x45x45 paludarium with a waterfall and a small pond, considering the length of it (90cm) and that the enclosure is not very high how do I manage the lights? I thought about 2/3 of the ground being earth for the frogs and the other 1/3 is the pond. Is that too small for the frogs? And if I put a waterfall in it is it really necessary to have a rain maker? Or can I just spray it once/twice a day with condensed water

    • @JoshsFrogs
      @JoshsFrogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What species of frog are looking to house in this enclosure? To try to blanket answer some other questions that apply to most species of frog: Many frogs are exposed to UVB in the wild so we like to provide it to frogs when it makes sense to This includes most tree frogs and toads and excludes dart frogs because they require glass tops which will block the UVB. You would want to have a 12 on and 12 off schedule for the UVB light if your situation warrants it. Regular light from regular CFLs or LEDs should be used regardless in a 12 on 12 off cycle with all frogs. Ponds and waterfalls are very subjective on whether they're a compatible so I'll answer those questions once I know what you're wanting to work with.

    • @MarcusK1
      @MarcusK1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshsFrogs I would use normal daylight lamps (neon tubes because of the length) regardless of UV in a 12/12 schedule. I've heard that good beginner frogs are dentrobates tinctorus azaerus and that would be my favorite if possible

    • @JoshsFrogs
      @JoshsFrogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We tend to discourage waterfalls and ponds with dart frogs because they are not good swimmers as they lack webbing between their toes. That being said people have done it and been successful but it can pose a drowning risk. You also need to ensure that the water stays clean and away from the substrate as it can cause bad bacteria to grow and become harmful to the frog. Water features are really cool but a lot of extra maintenance has to go into making them practical. It all depends on how much work you want to put into the tank building process and maintenance.

      It’s been a year so you probably won’t read this BUT. Captive poison darts are not toxic at all. What makes them poisonous in the wild is the type of insects they eat but in captivity they don’t eat them; they eat other things such as fruit flies. But I wouldn’t choose to touch them as their skin is very sensitive to human touch as the salts, chemicals, any soaps etc can damage them :)

      It all depends on which kinds you get! The "thumbnail" dart frogs are much smaller, likely the one you saw. Or you could have seen a young dart frog, as they morph out of the water very small and grow. The most common dart frogs we sell, Dendrobates tinctorius (www.joshsfrogs.com/frogs-for-sale/all-poison-dart-frogs/dendrobates-tinctorius.html) get anywhere from 1.25" - 2.5"!
