You are right about treated lumber. The new stuff does not last. The EPA forced a new formula for treated lumber. They removed arsenic and other chemicals which made lumber last decades in some cases.

The issue is usually the copper leaches away if there is salt in the area leaving no protection , you need to get Greenheart wood if you want it to last as it's poisonous

This is beautiful Zach! I have a pile of scrap metal in the corner of my garage salvaged from the dumpster of a local trucking company, and my wife always asks "Why are you keeping all that?", and then I'll find a piece to either machine or weld into something that I need to repair. Yeah, I'm a packrat. So what... ;) Your channel is awesome and I've shared it with a bunch of my friends.

Well Zach - You win the "Most cobbled up and yet fully functional" contraption of the year award! It probably came apart because of the wedge-shaped pieces ... Might wanna tack draw a bead between the wedge shaped weights to keep 'em from workin' against each other and loosening up the riggin'!

I salvaged some pressure treated deck lumber in the 90's from a deck that was probably built in the 1980's. I have kept it stored in a pile outside. I still have quite a bit of it left that I have used for miscellaneous outdoor projects for almost 30 years now.

Good video. As to the boards not lasting, I have heard that arsenic was used in the old days as part of the wood preservative. Now it is not, due to environmental issues. I read about a confederate grave being robbed in Kentucky. The corpse, except for the head, was so well preserved that the authorities initially thought that a murder had occurred and a modern corpse was in the grave with the confederate one. Turns out the confederate corpse had been preserved with arsenic and was in excellent shape after about 160 years. He had been shot in the head which explained the degradation in that area.

I dig it man. Going out and working for mom and pop companies just has a different vibe then the fortune 500 Co's that run the world...
Pull a well with 4-5 rod overshot on the string that ya rip through the table in 5th gear wide open cuz no one told ya, rod rubbers eject out of the table and give ya a mild heart attack watching 10k go to 50k in a fraction of a second all because it's cheaper to buy the rig Co a new overshot than it is to pull the pump.
I guarantee any rig crew that rolls up on that well is going to get a kick out of a small block motor on the back of walking beam for weight, headers n all

Your local lumberyard should be able to quote a higher concentration of treatment in the lumber to make it last longer. Many salt water deck suppliers would sell 2x6 decking and other material treated to 2.5 lb/ft3 CCA which is the same level of treatment as salt water pilings. The lumberyard I frequented would have Robbins Manufacturing treat whatever they wanted to the higher level of treatment within reason.
Of the shelf lumber from Lowes for example is .15 lb/ft3 MCQ “Ground Contact” which is really a lie.
If you want to investigate more you can look at the AWPA Use categories and go down the rabbit hole from there. I don’t know if this would be cost effective or if the boards you are using are already treated higher than residential and still failing. Personally I am cheap to a fault and would look at used railroad ties but their quality can vary and they only come in one size. There might even be used concrete railroad ties. Good Luck.
TLDR: You should be able to special order higher preservative lumber or investigate a lumberyard that specializes in saltwater docs.

I seen a referral to you using a crescent wrench, we called them a "Oklahoma speed handle" as they were used in many nefarious ways from track to theft of engines out of newer cars when poor folks used them for racing.... that is driving like hell to deliver "Shine" or white liquor, some just called it moonshine. There was no big wells in some of the states where coal was mined, but when the wife needed a washing machine for their ten or more kids, plus feed who ever showed up for dinner, I know for a fact that southern people took care of anyone who dropped by and was hungry. Not like now where in New York the illegal immigrant can receive food stamps which are now called EBT, too many abbreviations for letter shortened to mean many things that the voter no longer is able to know just what these shortened initials are for. Ask any kid for the large letters used for the president. You know it as POTUS, they think its a word describing a hate crime they might go to jail for. I myself at seventy four have troubles figuring out some of these short letter abbreviated letter assortments. Its time to call it what it is... make the whole thing unmistakable and see if those new voters coming along in our upcoming election can actually make a good call. There in N. York, kids were asked who the president was a few years ago, and they had no clue as to who it was and when someone said "Lincoln" I spit out what I was eating because of laughing so damn hard. Zach, I happen to love your content used for all purposes to just keep people wondering how you can come up with some of the eccentrics thought out and still hold a straight face. I do hope the Jeep is coming along just fine. A channel called "Low Buck Garage" is another fellow who will make you laugh in spite of being tired and trying to just break even. His last video was about using a few new parts from cheapest sources, amazon provided some and some came from local shops on his hoarded cash of old flat fender jeeps... primarily the transmission in his jeep was all rusty and poor condition so by using parts from china, his results were not surprising to you or me..... he showed the differences in the new against old rusty pieces and parts. Dang it Zach, give it a go on watching his channel. I love his attitude and the saying to his entro... "If your doing it and not having fun, then your doing it wrong" and that should apply to everything in life. Life does have some disappointments. My dad never was happy for me coming along, I just crimped his style, coming home from the bar drinking with his buddies was no fun plus making excuses to the wife was getting painful. He would sober up and promise to never do that again, and come next saturday come home, beat hell out of mom as the would argue and fight like cats and dogs, after a good beating, wind up in the bedroom and of course I need not explain that much further. Hells bells, everytime I make a comment to you, it winds up being a book review or some story of my past, like that crescent wrench or a million other old sayings used back in time. I do hope you check out the Low Buck Garage video... everyone needs to enjoy life... and this time I didn't fall into a political agenda... well not too much. Have a great day in the heat there in that heat wave you seem to enjoy or at least survive in. I sometimes wonder if there are small ponds of water like the western movies showed.... cowboy finds water just before dying. I'm old and western movies were what I grew up with. Who didn't like John Wayne movies. His last movie made me cry almost knowing that he really did have cancer and was thinking about the pain of death. Yeah I know, took another chapter in a book length comment to get rid of me.
