What they wanted to prevent was to have a stalemate, so a decision was entrusted to the queenmother. She has this right to do so on three occasions. Failure of which the kingmakers can take over. (cf In re wenchi stool). It is not a democratic process but we are encouraged to reach some consensus so that the candidate will be acceptable to all. There is a reason for this kind of approach. In Asanteman Election of the Paramount Chief is solely done by the Queen mother. All the applicants must present their petition to the Queen mother to select the Chief. It is solely on Queen mother duty to select the Chief. After being selected by the Queen mother, the appointed person is shown to the Gyaase and the other king makers for interrogation and scrutiny and if he's not eligible and have an indemnity then he is then rejected. However if he is accepted he is then hide from the public to be taught the customs of the kingdom. It is not the duty of the entire royals to do the selection but few people called kingmakers. Yes, she has the obligation to consult with the Abusua Panin among the legitimate royals to elect a candidate. The queen mother can’t unilaterally impose any one on the royals. That candidate must be a true royal to be accepted by the adehye3 Abusua. Thereafter, the chosen candidate is presented to Gyaase by the queen mother on behalf of the royal family.
