- Makena Residence, built on the island of Maui, Hawaii, is a home that enjoys an ocean view. Located in a resort area, the clients acquired two adjacent lots to build the house, which was designed in a contemporary style with low-maintenance materials such as concrete, cypress, and steel.
The property has two floors, with bedrooms and a smaller kitchen on the lower level, and the master suite, living room, main kitchen, dining room, and an office on the upper level. All rooms have a view of the ocean, and large windows capture the stunning view of the area.
The house was designed to withstand the region's harsh weather conditions, including wind and saltwater. Skylights and tall windows puncture the minimalist structure from all sides to flood the interior with light that moves subtly throughout the day, activating different textures. In addition to chasing the light, the architecture also had to counter it: the 3-meter eave facing west serves as the primary protection against intense sun exposure and heat gain.
Elegantly designed vertical wooden shutters separate spaces while filtering sunlight into internal rooms. Cooling demand is minimized through the design for cross-ventilation, allowing the Hawaiian ocean breeze to flow through large glass doors and motorized windows. Thermal comfort is maintained with a highly insulated and efficient building envelope while heat gain is controlled. From the roof, two narrow rain curtains made of copper mesh are hung to drain rainwater. The roof is equipped with a photovoltaic system that further reduces energy demand from the power grid. All of these measures, together, culminate in a building that harnesses the elements and has achieved LEED Silver certification for its sustainable design strategies.
The architecture is described as a collaborative effort between the architect and the natural beauty of the location. The result is a custom-built property that harmonizes with the environment.

A beautiful home worth visiting
it is beautiful
oh la la ,so cool!
wow
Could you possibly tell me which Software to use for the image at 7:03.. So nice and very obvious to see!
The modeling was done using Graphisoft Archicad and the post-production (editing) was carried out in Photoshop using layered textures.
@@mirageon I've heard ArchiCad but in my country rather use AutoCad. Can we do the same modeling by SketchUp or Revit, which are quite popular now?
@@leduke8989 Both SketchUp and Revit can achieve the same result, what makes a difference is the post-production in Photoshop. You just need to export your file in PDF format, even in wireframe mode, and import it into Photoshop. There, you can use the magic wand tool to select the parts where you want to apply texture or color. To make certain lines thicker, you just need to add a border to the texture and choose the thickness.
@@mirageon many thanks!
