Dinu Lipatti in Zurich in 1950: 3 solo works by Chopin

- Dinu Lipatti's February 7, 1950 concert performance of 3 solo works by Chopin:
0:20 Nocturne No.8 in D-Flat Major Op.27 No.2
6:24 Etude in E Minor Op.25 No.5
9:37 Etude in G-Flat Major Op.10 No.5 'Black Keys'
Lipatti played the Chopin E Minor Concerto at this symphonic concert, with Otto Ackerman conducting the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, and after the intermission these three solo works were programmed; the works were in fact on the printed programme, not played as an encore as some have believed, though it is certainly unusual to have solo works officially included in an orchestral concert. One can hear Lipatti preluding prior to his performance of the Chopin Nocturne.
The material for these performances comes from three sources:
Dr Marc Gertsch's amateur recording of another collector's broadcast tape, which he recorded with a handheld microphone in 1951
a privately-pressed white-label LP of the entire concert (with a section missing from the first movement and some radio interference throughout) that circulated in a very closed network and was never released. I obtained this from Lipatti pupil Charles Reiner in 1990, who had received it years earlier from a friend in California.
a small reel tape of the two etudes (minus the first notes of the E Minor Etude) that was found in Gertsch's collection, ostensibly from the collector who claimed to have the entire concert in wonderful hi-fi sound but refused to copy the entire thing for Madeleine Lipatti and Walter Legge.
The final notes of the Nocturne were missing from Gertsch's tape - on the Turnabout Vox LP that featured these solos alongside the 1947 Amsterdam performance of the Bach-Busoni D Minor Concerto, these were filled in from the same passage from commercial disc - and in this current transfer, those notes were replaced with the actual Zurich performance from the other unpublished tape source on the white-label privately-pressed LP. This source was additionally used for the first notes of the E Minor Etude before switching to the hi-fi tape, which captures Lipatti's tone with exquisite fidelity.
Edwin Fischer was at this concert and noted how magnificent the entire performance was, and indeed Lipatti's playing in these solos is extraordinarily beautiful. The Nocturne is taken at a more spacious tempo than his official recording of the work, perhaps a combination of no time constraints on a commercial 78rpm disc plus the suffering he had gone through in the 3 years between his studio account and this concert, with gloriously arched phrasing and marvellous rubato. The two Etudes are played with sparkling tone, remarkably refined articulation, stunning rhythmic vitality, and exquisite clarity of voicing. The middle section of the E Minor Etude features a melodic line that is exquisitely shaped, as if sung by the most skilled singer in one breath, while the 'Black Keys' Etude demonstrates Lipatti's stunning virtuosity fused with refined musicality, eschewing empty showmanship while being technically of the highest standard.
This photograph was taken at Lipatti's final solo recital in Besancon, France on September 16, 1950, by local photographer Michel Meusy.

I try not to listen to him when I drive because I tend to close my eyes, and sometimes forget to breathe. So grateful to have listened to his music in this life. Thank you
These are invaluable documents. Which of us has ever heard this Nocturne played like that. There are no words to describe it. I am just overwhelmed. Thank you.
It is between those who know and appreciate transcendental beauty.
This is why Lipatti is my all time favourite pianist!
greatest of all time
Every morsel of what he recorded is a precious jewel!
It’s interesting to look at the audience in this photo of Lipatti’s last performance. They’re all spellbound by this master artist.
The king of pianists!❤🌷🙏🎹
Yes.. He's still the best. Even with the aged recording, and played through the speakers on my phone, it is truly utterly brilliant
Absolument inimaginable
I salute you for the dedication to finding Lipatti's recordings and make them justice ❤ Playing the piano myself (as an amateur, but also trying to do my best) I have quite a bunch of Lipatti's recordings, but didn't know these superb ones.
The Nocturne is simply out of this world. The magic of Lipatti shines through every note despite the indifferent recording. His flawless technique along with immaculate pedalling brings pristine clarity to the Etudes.
Forever love Lipatti!!!!!
I have never found such expressiveness. It is the best interpretation.
It is weird that he is not more popular.
He has all to be an exceptional pianist. His playing was so emotional, his sounds so clean. Everything seems effortless.
Perhaps he didn't live long enough but for me he should be one the legendary pianist.
I know a lot of amateur of classical piano know Lipatti, but most people know Rubinstein, Richter, Cziffra, Horowitz,... and all those pianists are amazing, but I feel that sometimes Lipatti is left on the side which he doesn't deserve at all!
@Mare pacat c-a avut o viata atat de scurta!!😢❤
I'm not a musician nor have I listened to all the classical music that have been written, but(!) I alwyas have the feeling that Lipatti's performances are just the way the composer intended them to be.
Thank you!
Cortot described Lipatti's playing as "perfect"!😊
I don't think there is anything we need add to that...!😊😊🎹
Agree 👍
so gracious, simply wonderful💖
Splendid !!!
PERFECTION!
My hero! I played this Nocturne at my Master's Recital. It's unbelievably beautiful. Have you noticed the resemblance in Lipatti and Chopin's profiles? I also wonder, given Chopin's illness and weakness, what his fortes would sound like to us, today.
So beautiful to coming into my heart~♡
Such perfection!...
So touching, divine
0:20 This Nocturne ........ oh God ... even from the very first notes, I don't ask myself if this could be my taste or not, if I share it or not, if I am able to understand, if, if, if ....
This is beyond all I can imagine. Beyond.
Perhaps because it is modest in his perfection ?
I don't know anymore, no words ....
Exquisite...thanks so much for sharing, Mark.
Definitely was a GREAT artist, totally dedicated to play the music living in his soul.
thank you for the share, such high quality of playing, and the sound so beautiful, I cannot remember such tender and soulful interpretation of this nocturne
THE way to play Chopin!
Increible , interpretar a Chopin de esa ligera y sensible forma . Gracias
1:11 these moments ...................... this kind of dramatic recitando unbelievable ... und diese ff dazu .... ...
Thank you for this! Every performance of these masterpieces by Lipatti is itself a masterpiece. This is true for every one of his performances.
I also really appreciate the photo backdrop here: You can see how Lipatti touches the souls of his audience.
What a benefactor you are! As great as Lipatti could be in a studio there’s nothing like him live. The spacious tempi remind us of Andre Gide’s pleading in his Notes on Chopin. Thanks so much.
Noone plays the Nocturne like this! Thank you for this gift! Happy New Year!! Mark!
Absolutely stunning! I am always so grateful for your work in sharing his most incredible music with the world.
By the way, I was in Geneva a little over a year ago and wanted to pay respects to him. I spent a while trying to locate his grave and was unsuccessful, but may have been directed to the wrong place. Have you visited his grave before? I would love to find it next time I make it to Geneva.
@@JaredLeeFischer I believe it's the cemetary in Chene-Bourg ...
@@ThePianoFiles Thanks! Hopefully I'll have better luck next time.
@@JaredLeeFischer I was visiting from Canada, was at the right cemetery, and couldn't find the gravestone. There wasn't any staff on duty that I could find... was very disappointing. Hopefully we both manage next time!
Oh wow, so you had the same issue! My wife and I were visiting Geneva from the US and she and I and two friends looked for a good hour and were also very disappointed! If I make it back and find it, I'll let you know.
Divine ! Thank you Mark!
Among the most beautiful chopin playing... What an extraordinary musician. He was attaining a spiritual peak before he passed away. Thank you for this. Stu
Omg he brings tears from the soul of the human heart.
What a find! Like discovering the Apollo Belvedere.
Lovely analogy.
Lovely version of the op. 25 nr 5
Legendary!
Thanks for that, Mark ! Hope you are well.
I have these on an LP containing the Bach D minor concerto with van Beinum in Amsterdam.I always mistakenly thought that they were encores given after the concerto. In any case,I always felt that these 3 represented Lipatti at his best, and for me this means-humanity's best, one of those occurrences that makes you think of the claim that we were created in the image.
It was natural to think they were encores since one rarely sees solo works programmed with a concerto - but that was the case here, as the printed programme for this concert reveals. Remarkable playing indeed!
Extraordinary, thanks!
Sublime
So deeply touching-thank you for sharing this, Mark.
Thank you very much for this rare, very wonderful upload
Realmente hermoso
So beautiful! It could not be more satisfying!
What perfect timing.
9:37 this is a miracle for my humble ears ... every note, every one, exactly corresponding to what I've dreamed of, at the exact place, rythm, accuracy, speed and intonation I could have imagined .....
Fantastic! really refreshing interpretations.
C est merveilleux . .
Thank you!
His "Black Key" Etude is breathtaking.
Mozart, Schubert, Lipatti!
Sublime!
Speechless !!!
merveilleux pianiste, sensible, grand interprete
Dreamy and rapturous. My favourite interpretation of this sublime Chopin nocturne - together with the interpretation of Peter Schmalfuss.
Astounding gift this man had.
Adevarata valoare romaneasca 👏👏👏
The absolute purity of Dinu Lipatti's playing remembers me to an another guy, but a composer, and equaling this Angel's speaking ability, a certain W. A. Mozart.
its the purest of touch isnt it? i love this guy. The spirits couldnt stand to be without him for too long and had to take him back
Cuánta belleza!
Wonderful execution !
❤
Walter Legge, the impresario was later to remark of Dinu Lipatti: “By the same light we may say it is not enough to be a great pianist: To play as Dinu Lipatti played you must be a chosen instrument of God. God lent the world His chosen instrument whom we called Dini Lipatti for too brief a space.” Walter Legge,
3:24 and these ten seconds ... this is .....
YES!
Along with godowski, one of the greatest Chopin interpreters ever..
Dinu is The God ho play piano .
Nobody can ever equal this one (nocturne).
@john bingham absolutely! I also recorded it. It is on my channel. Different than Lipatti of course. I would like to have your opinion.
Hello Michael.Thank you.
It is said of Louis Armstrong that when someone asked him what Jazz was,he replied, "if you have to ask me I can"t tell you.".....I just do not know how such pianists such as Lipatti,Rubinstein.Sviatislov Richter and others, with especial regard to Chopin, can bring me to tears.I can only suppose that it borders on the spiritual, and psychological.
Nobody. This is purity. Absolute purity. And I cannot understand how it works.
Hello Fritz....In my humble opinion, as well as intonation it is a matter of balance. Here he is able to (as is often the case with Chopin)to balance the melody in the upper register with the lower with neither one dominating.Among others who can achieve this is Rubinstein and especially Sviatislov Richter. If you care to listen to his playing of the...Nocturne in E minor opus 72 no 1 perhaps you would agree.v
I think who ever put Dinu Lipatti D.O.B has got it wrong because I was told by a lot of people that he was Born on Monday March 19th 1917 and he Died on Saturday December 2nd 1950 at just 33 and I've got Some of his Records Reissued in 1955 on(EMI) Columbia as I won't touch his Originals because they were issued by Columbia(EMI) and they were not issued in Albums and I found that the 1950's Columbia Reissues are far better than the later one's from the 1970's and it was such a shame that he died so young[33]on Saturday December 2nd 1950 and thank God for the Gramophone as his Records are still selling Some 72 years after he Died;and I know that Great gains have been made into the treatment of Cancer and that Poor Man must have been Suffering towards the end of his life and I hope and Pray that no one will go through what he has been through
Romania was using a different calendar at the time - they only adopted the one we all use now in 1919 - so March 19 at that time would actually be April 1st. So March 19 was his printed birthday but on today's calendar it would actually be April 1
I Didn't know that but he was a Brilliant Concert Pianist and it was such a shame that he died at such a Young age of 33 and thank God for the Gramophone as I wasn't Born till the 22nd of December 1956 and My Great Niece Emily was Born on My 56th Birthday in 2012
@@martincook318 Hodgkin s disease . Since 1943 and diagnosed in 1947.
Did he have audience on stage in Besançon? I have never seen a photo which captured people who seem so near!
Yes, this photo is from Besancon and the audience was seated all the way around... behind him as well
@@ThePianoFiles Thank you very much, Mark!

He preludizes!
Indeed he does and did, as can famously be heard in his last recital. A new release and remastering of the Last Recital on the Solstice label in France has just been release, and it includes the preludes before the Schubert and Chopin that were somehow never released on EMI's original issue (and all subsequent reissues). Glorious!
Medianico!
Inaltator.......
Fabelhaft
