The moors happen to be of mixed North African decent, and could be considered “black” by today’s standards. However, the ancestors of the moors were under Roman rule, as you stated.

In American people of a “lighter” skin tone are all considered white. Regardless of heritage because unless you’re a 1-4th generational immigrant your heritage is mixed. If you are dark skinned you are usually considered “black” as you are either some relation to slaves in the US or again have mixed heritage. This is why these various cultures are labeled “white” even though technically speaking they are different groups of people. The issue here is that yes these groups were different but have been presented as essentially having the same skin color. Which is false even in accordance of first hand account written history. So generally speaking yes it is fair to label many of these groups as originally being “black” as they weren’t actually “white” in the most broadest of senses. People with “olive” skin tones aren’t white. That’s a modern understanding. Olive is just a shade of “black” and non-white.

You have to remember that ancient Greek history is broken into multiple periods and multiple regions. The main starting point for this is Minoan Crete where there is evidence of African contact/ influence. Then later this spreads to the mainland and evolved into the later classical era, which also shows signs of influence from Africa, via the Nile valley. Ethiopians are present a lot in Greek mythology.

As a Greek woman I have the above experience: we are r the only “White” ppl, (btw not all of us white many of us brown skin), we are go darker one we exposed to the sun! The moors happen to be of mixed North African decent, and could be considered “black” by today’s standards. However, the ancestors of the moors were under Roman rule, as you stated.

In American people of a “lighter” skin tone are all considered white. Regardless of heritage because unless you’re a 1-4th generational immigrant your heritage is mixed. If you are dark skinned you are usually considered “black” as you are either some relation to slaves in the US or again have mixed heritage.
This is why these various cultures are labeled “white” even though technically speaking they are different groups of people. The issue here is that yes these groups were different but have been presented as essentially having the same skin color. Which is false even in accordance of first hand account written history.
So generally speaking yes it is fair to label many of these groups as originally being “black” as they weren’t actually “white” in the most broadest of senses. People with “olive” skin tones aren’t white. That’s a modern understanding. Olive is just a shade of “black” and non-white.

You have to remember that ancient Greek history is broken into multiple periods and multiple regions. The main starting point for this is Minoan Crete where there is evidence of African contact/ influence. Then later this spreads to the mainland and evolved into the later classical era, which also shows signs of influence from Africa, via the Nile valley. Ethiopians are present a lot in Greek mythology.
