    Does this work on non tabular grain films?

    Another problem solved for me! Ammonium thiosulfate is very hard to get in Australia too; I was about to resort to buying commercial fixer. Many thanks again for your wonderful videos, John.

      Glad you can source ammonium chloride. It's much easier to get here too and is the 'old' way of making rapid fix. Works a treat!

    thanks for your kind reply, I make this up 1 liter at a time than divide it into 500ml batches to use with film. My last batch seemed to go off early. I went to use it yesterday and it had a skunk smell to it so i used my backup. when i went to make a new batch I found the error. since I have been sidelined with a hip replacement It has been a couple weeks since I have developed a film. So i have no Idea why it went off early.
    It is great to see you reply to these comments with everything else you have going on. Wishing well to your mom and family.
    Cheers!!

    Amazing fixer thanks John, I love it , I've made my first litre a few weeks ago... after around 15/16 rolls the clearing time is getting longer and longer... it seems to me that the conventional acid fixers I used in the past had much more capacity... what do you think? Can I replenish it with 10 grams of ammonium chloride or something else?

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't have as much capacity as your old acid fixers. Once it's doubled in time to fix the film make fresh.

    Dear John, what is the shelf life of this fixer?

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never tested the shelf life. I'm usually through a litre in about three months though, so at least that.

    Thanks for this video. I have been making my own developers for a while now, it I want to make my own fixers as well. One question; is this solution used as a stock fixer or is it diluted?

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Larry. Use this as stock. It'll fix 10-20 films or 30 10x8 papers. Similar to my previous TF-2 video.

    Hi John, excellent video as usual.
    I know you said you'd use this fixer for the pyro developers, but can you make it an alkaline fixer? By, say adding S metaborate or carbonate?
    Or can 250g of S thiosulphate in TF-2 be replaced with 200g of S thio and 50g Ammonium chloride?
    Or is there a rapid alkaline fixer.
    My go to film is Tmax and newly adopted developer is Pyrocat HD. Life is too short to be spent on fixing ...

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never tried. I think if you want a really good alkaline rapid fix use TF3 from my book.

  • @jameslane3846

    I buy ammonium thiosulphate by the 5kg bucket for like £30. Easy peasy for me to get a hold of it :) I make TF3

    Does the ammonium chloride need to be of a particular grade? Amazon US has a pound of fertilizer/feed grade ammonium chloride for $9.99.

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good question. I buy from a chemical supply company and it's reasonably high grade. That would be the best option or you might introduce some unwanted contamination.

    Hi! thanks for your videos! Can I use ammonium thiosulfite to replace ammonium chloride? and sodium sulfite to replace potassium metabisulfite? What amounts should I use?

      @@PictorialPlanet Yes, I have visited your website on many occasions. I've checked again, but I still don't know how to replace the chloride.

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Xavi_Magazine ah, look down the page at TF3 fix. This formula replaces the chloride with ammonium thiosulphate.

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Xavi_Magazine Sorry to dupe my reply but I can't see it for some reason. Look down the page for the fix called TF3. This fix replaced the ammonium chloride with ammonium thiosulphate and uses sulphite not metabisulphite. Thus is the formula you want.

    That is a interesting comparison. You said you would use this with Pyro developer. Will it keep the stain?
    Our would TF3 a better choice with Pyro and Delta or t-Max?

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it would affect the stain, perceivably. It's only mildly acidic but TF3, if you can get ammonium thiosulphate would be the best of the two.

    • @PictorialPlanet
      @PictorialPlanet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      10-20. I make fresh when it takes twice as long to clear the film as when it was fresh. In this demonstrations case that would be 2:40 to clear the film.
