Connect to remote PCs from Linux with Remmina

- Remmina is a fantastic tool to connect to a remote computer over the network. In this video, I'll show you how to connect to a remote computer using Remmina, via the RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and VNC (Virtual Network Computing) protocols. You can even share a folder and a clipboard between your machine and the remote device. It's super neat!

Veronica, Belated Thanksgiving! This was a nice introduction to Remmina. I really enjoyed the previous one on KVM/QEMU and think you should dive deeper into KVM/QEMU, potentially provisioning them with Terraform, and orchestrating them with Nomad
I love Remmina and use it nearly every day. It's right in Add/Remove Software in Manjaro, so super easy to install. To receive Remote Desktop connections the server machine needs Windows Pro or better - no rdp into a Windows Home edition. I didn't know the shared folder feature - thank you very much for that useful trick!

I like the example of sharing a file. Who wouldn't want to share a neat, though random, picture of the NES? I came across this video before. I think it's how I found this channel. I was just starting to play around with VNC then. I did get it to partially work, and Remmina was a great recommendation for a viewer. My big issue was setting up the server side. Nothing seemed to work quite right. Sharing seems to have changed in Mint from what I understand. One of my machines was running MX with KDE. KDE has a nice sharing utility, but the password function was broken(of course). I finally got back to it and saw that people recommended vino for that on Xfce machines like my laptop. Finally got it all set up right and put vino on all the machines I needed it for. Back to Remmina, I see why you recommend it. It's great. The resolution scaling it does is so helpful. As was this video.
Awesome video as usual. Remmina it's in almost all official repositories also. Another alternative use can be an ssh connection on the same machine, for running a systemd-nspawn container in an more confortable environment than a simple terminal window.

Yup. I'll like to know a bit more about forwarding in ssh, used it in the past, never knew how it works. Didn´t knew Remminna. it is just in the repos for Gentoo and Arch, so cool.
I use the SSH tunneling a lot for my VNC or SPICE connections, especially looking at remote VMs.
@@VeronicaExplains and power question is can Remmina do the trick on remote machine, so human intervention is not necessary there, so one could reach machines with nop public ip, and no helping hand there

5:18 Make sure you enable compression using ssh tunnel as in most cases( depends on CPU capacity ) this will improve U/X for VNC connections.

In Ubuntu 21.10 I installed Remmina as deb and I use it mainly to connect to my FreeBSD backup server on a famous CPU; a 2003 Pentium 4 HT (1C2T; 3.0GHz; 2GB DDR) with 1.21 TB of leftover HDDs ( 2 IDE 3.5" and 2 SATA 2.5" HDDs). It is in use for ~1 hour/week.

I believe Windows users will find Only Pro versions of Windows will allow RPD access from other systems. Alll windows versions support RDP as a client,, but only Pro versions support the RDP Server access as shown in this video. Linux can be accessed from Windows via RDP using something called xrdp. I suggest this be covered in a future video.
Very good point. Though not at all beginner friendly. I also use xrdp as the protocol to remote in. Yes there are some firewall tweaks that need to be made but once done I've found connectivity to be more reliable than vnc. Just my take.

$sudo pacman -S remmina does the job on Arch and Arch-based OS's. Of course, Flatpak, Snap and Appimage is also available, if you prefer.
Really like these videos. As it's cold, Flu and Covid season maybe every time you say 'Windows' we should all take a swig of something really alcoholic, you know to kill the germs.
Nice and helpful video. I have just connected to my Pi4, I needed to change the connection to VNC password to get in. I am sure that more videos on VNC, SSH and remote connection would be useful. I use Teamviewer to help family and friends, but it would be nice to try Remmina. I use Linux, but most of my calls for help are from Windows users, and I thought Windows was supposed to be intuitive.... :-/ Keep up the good work.
I'm glad you found it useful! I'm hoping to get out and do a follow-up about SSH and port forwarding once the COVID numbers drop a bit in my area. I don't have a consumer router of my own to play with, as most of my work is in the commercial-grade stuff at this point!
My advice in the meantime to connect to a remote Windows user would be to see if they'll let you set up something simple like a Pi for the SSH connection inside the network. Then you tweak the router to allow port forwarding for the SSH connection from your home IP to the Pi. Then, the SSH tunnel will first connect to the Pi, and you can use Remmina over RDP or VNC to connect to the Windows devices (you'll have to install VNC first on the Windows devices, though).

At my last job, I often used Windows' Remote Desktop, precisely because the remote machine would remain locked.
I often needed to use the PC in my office for work that should not be viewed by others. But if I was not there, I could not know if anyone could see my screen.
With Remote Desktop, that was not a problem.
I got to do work, as if I was sitting in my office, with full access to their network from that PC, with no worries about anyone seeing my screen.
For screen sharing, I use Quick Assist. It works great. But there are a few drawbacks:
1) It will work only between two Windows 10 (or higher) OS's.
2) The helper must have a Microsoft account.
3) The remote computer (needing the assistance) needs to be present to grant permission. This is fine for security reasons. But Quick Assist is useless if no one is at the remote machine.
Remmina sounds great, especially for non Windows OS's.

As a Gentoo user, I simply emerge it: emerge --ask remmina
I also recommend the following uses:
* crypt: add encryption support
* cups: allow printing screenshot directly
* nls: add language support for non-American
* rdp: allow RDP protocol
* ssh: enable SSH and SFTP integration and tunneling
* vnc: allow VNC protocol
* -telemetry: disable usage information transmission
Here are additional uses depending on what you want:
* zeroconf: allow automatic service discovery (mainly shared folders or printer)
* gvnc: enable remote console for KVM
* kwallet: enable KDE wallet integration
* spice: enable remote console using spice protocol
* x2go: enable x2go extensions to SSH protocol (require SSH)

Veronica, I do not know if someone else has mentioned it, if so sorry for the repeat. Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 installs Remmina with it. I have been a long time user of both Windows and Linux but linux was for my ham radio hobby. I find that my 5th generation I-7 processor in my game machine which runs Windows 10 cannot supportedly upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 according to Microsoft will only have 4 more years with support updates. So naturally I have moved my main machine over to Linux as I am not going to let Microsoft dictate when I have to buy a new computer and of course a Windows 11 license. Keep up the good videos!!!

where do you get the Remmina VNC plugin for GNOME and KVM? I don't see it when I "sudo apt search remmina-plugin". The regular *-vnc doesn't seem to like connecting for me
Nice video. I'd like to see Remmina compared to third-partry tools like Anydesk and Teamviewer, among many others, from the standpoint of security and vulnerabilities. I use those tools a lot to help friends and distant relatives fix their machines. It would seem Remmina requires considerable knowledge on the part of the end user to get things set up correctly.
It seems simple to me. It pretty much works with whatever settings you give it.
I use anydesk but this seems like a great alternative.
If I set up Remmina on two machines running MINT, is it just connecting to the computer or are all hard drives also accessible. I have several 10Tb hard drive full of movies, tv shows and music and when I am away from home, would I be able to access those to watch a movie or show, or listen to some music. I don't want to have to cart around several huge hard drives. Lastly, is this able to work from anywhere on the planet? I plan for future travel and I have been switching over to Linux, predominantly MINT. I appreciate your view.

Unfortunately in Linux Mint, which I want to connect to, there is no Sharing-Entry in the settings. Therefore I can't make it work yet.
Thank you for this very informative video. I would be very interested to hear what you have to say about connecting to a windows remote using a different protocol than RDP (so that the person sitting at the remote can see what is going on on the screen). Currently I am able to use remmina to connect via RDP (over a VPN), but as you mentioned, the screen locks up for the user sitting at the remote machine.
I guess this answers my question about sharing a monitor across multiple machines, rather than (in addition to) using Barrior.
I've been having issues connecting my Debian 12 machines with Cinnamon. I can't enabled desktop sharing from settings, so I've tried activating vino and tried enabling VNC backend in dconf editor. No dice! Does anyone know what I'm missing?
do u know how to connect to rdp via remmina using BOTH screens on the client side? it seems mstsc can do it. but was unsuccessful with linux tools so far

You have made a demonstration using Remmina to link two computer on the same network. But what about the config to link my computer to another computer located on a different network somewhere on the planet? I am using Linux mint lmde and I want to communicate with a windows 10 platform

How would I add audio to this VNC? The reason why I got Remmina is because audio wasn't working with Proxmox VMs.
Came here in the hopes of getting some explanation on port forwarding with SSH so I can remote desktop into a server back in the US from Europe... 5:38 was a major let down. But at least this helped explain Remmina a little more and to point me in the direction of some forums.

Hi, great video. I consider myself an expert in Linux, but I always have trouble with screen sharing. I am trying to screen share from my Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon on my laptop as a client to my desktop computer as the server, also running Mint 20.3. I installed remmina on the laptop, no problem. but I can't figure out how to get the mint VNC server to work. I tried x11vnc, but it won't connect. Any help would be apprciated
I have the exact same problem. I'm yet to find a simple way to connect two computers with LM 20.3 :/
If it was me I would install xrdp on the "server" PC. Then use Remmina in RDP mode on the laptop. Why? because VNC sucks!

I use fedora 35 on my home server and home laptop. I have a windows vm that i use PCI passthrough with to play games on my tv. I wanted to have a linux vm I could use the same way but it keeps pausing when I use pci pass through. I shutdown the windows vm connected then try to start the linux vm but it has issues. Have you ever tried pci passthrough with a linux vm in virt-manager?
Oh and on my windows vm I use tightvnc because I want to see what they are seeing on the tv if I am remote. I use remmina from my laptop to connect to that machine.
Good presentation on Remmina. I use it on OpenSuse to connect to my Windows machine, and just set it up for connecting back to my Linux boxes from Windows. One thing I noticed is that connecting to the Linux machine does not present the active desktop observed on the local machine, but instead, creates a new desktop that is not laid out the same. Windows, on the other hand, is the same desktop. This issue can be a bit problematic if I leave apps open on my Linux desktop and then Remmina into that box only to not have those apps present.
Have you experienced this and possibly know of a workaround?

To share my Linux desktop over VNC to my (mostly)Windows 10 laptop, I start X11VNC on the computer I want to control. You start it yourself in the desktop environment, and it puts an icon in the system tray or dock after you fill in the options screen. Other ways of running VNC on Linux give you a new desktop upon connection.

everything is super. but remmina supports ssh connection...how to connect via ssh to another device that doesn't have x-server? for example, there is a rasberry pi zero and there is no desktop environment. I would like to know the procedure.
Two questions. First, how well does Remmina support multiple monitors? Both in terms of connecting to a machine with multiples, as well as connecting from a screen with multiple monitors? Most folks have multiple monitors hooked to their computers these days, was wondering if I can remote to a computer and have it use all the monitors on my host box.
Second, does it support PC Names as opposed to IP Addresses? Seems like every time I take a laptop to a coffee shop when I get back to the house my home network winds up giving it a different IP Address. And yes, I could set up a static IP address for each box, but that presents its own set of headaches.
Multi-monitor: if you're connecting to Windows via RDP, I don't think so since it takes your resolution instead of the server. However, if you have multiple monitors or an ultrawide, it should scale to as large as you can make the window. As far as VNC goes- I think they're working on it, but I haven't tested. They have an issue open on their Gitlab about it.
PC names: in my experience it does, so long as the device name is resolvable on your network!
Have you tried the TeamViewer plugin? I’d really like to know how it works, the official app is a pain in the ass.
