When I was on archaeological excavations and not just doing theoretical work I would be on site with people for a full three months across June/July/August. In a strangely cohesive way we would pick up certain routines and one was that toothbrushes kind of ended up in a big pot because we would boil them every few days in case anything in the soil could make us sick as it got everywhere. People kind of stopped admitting to toothbrush blunders as we were too tired to care after three days! It sounds gross but the fact we boiled them made complaining pointless. If it was a problem then staff kept their toothbrushes with them in their luggage.
