If I remember my history correctly, it was mostly Irish who became 'coppers' to police New York back in the day before Teddy Roosevelt reformed it to be a professional department. The ranks were filmed with mostly Irish immigrants and became a family thing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong - I would be humbled.

The police was considered a "lowly" profession, along with firefighting, soldiering and construction and Irish immigrants were willing to do the work to survive and build the "American dream". The Galtee Mountains are 43 min drive from own town of Clonmel in County Tipperary Eire
Here is the Lyrics of The Galtee Mountain Boy
as I said my own Town Clonmel gets a mention
I joined the flying column
In Nineteen and Sixteen
In Cork with Seán Moylan
Tipperary with Dan Breen
I'm arrested by free staters and
Sentenced for to die
"Farewell to Tipperary," said the
Galtee mountain boy
We went across the valleys and
Over the hilltops green
Where we met with Dinny Lacey
Seán Hogan and Dan Breen
Seán Moylan and his gallant men
They kept the flag flyin' high
"Farewell to Tipperary," said the
Galtee mountain boy
We trekked the Wicklow Mountains we
Were rebels on the run
Though hunted night and morning
We were outlaws but free men
We roamed the Dublin Mountains as
The Sun was shining high
"Farewell to Tipperary," said the
Galtee mountain boy
Oh, I'll bid farewell to old Clonmel
I never more will see
And to the Galtee mountains
That oft-times sheltered me
The men who fought for their liberty
Who died without a sigh
"May their cause be ne'er forgotten"
Said the Galtee mountain boy
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam - may he rest in peace in Irish
