- Eben Alexander is a neurosurgeon who has served on the medical staff at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School, Duke University Medical Center, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Great presentation. This man really comes across as a clear, crisp and truthful individual. To me it is obvious his experience is genuine and that he went through a profoundly transformative experience. Kudos.
Eben Alexander gives a truly extraordinary presentation. It has taken me half a century of hard times, meditation and withering deprivation while studying ontology to find myself where this man is today. Unfortunately, I have not had an NDE but similar mystical experiences, tiny prizes one finds when honestly seeking, have helped me along the cobble-stoned road.
You probably wont read this, but how do you keep back on track when you fall off the wagon when travelling on the road of spirituality?
I just ask, because i find myself in such a situation where I seem to not be able to pull myself back with my current abilities by questioning the negative attitudes towards spirituality etc.
@@cx777o I have been the same way, after mu uncle got horribly ill and almost died I was so afraid of death...and started doubting again. Have had very few mystical experiences. For me, it really helped with these kind of lectures, and other videos of real people having paranormal experiences. Reading NDEs, and also watching certain "ghost hunting" tv-shows. Not every tv-show out there is lying :) Try checking out Britains most haunted here on youtube, it's really good and the people are genuine.

I have been a believer in God and Jesus all my life but have always had the little imp of doubt in my mind. I have read the Bible through several times and try to be a good person. I am 75 and that fear has grown, mostly dreading that there may be nothing after death. Eben, you have set me on solid ground. From the bits and pieces of experiences I have had in my life I think Ebon Alexander's account is quite accurate(it goes well with what I know , the little I know). He does good job as is possible to translate the experience he went through into the communication of this reality.

Interesting NDE, which cross-references well with many other NDEs. I think the "orb" that Eben talks about reveals an important insight about the process. During his NDE, this orb acted as a kind of "interpreter", as Eben says, between his limited consciousness and the vast Universal Source Consciousness/Mind. Many people who also experienced this "interface" - as some others call it - during their NDEs also "saw" it as a white light/orb, while others experienced it as an image of various religious figures or loved ones who they were close to during their lives. One guy even saw this interface as his dog, which I think is totally cool! Imagine having a conversation with your dog about the nature of reality/consciousness. LOL.
Another intriguing part of Eben's NDE was the realization that he is made of the same "conscious stuff" as the Source Consciousness, AND that he is an invaluable part of this Universal Consciousness. I have seen this concept expressed in many other NDEs - that we are each a small piece and ultimately one with the Source consciousness. As opposed to what many religions teach - that individual consciousness/mind is separate from Source Consciousness/Mind. The Oneness model makes a lot more sense to me. Cheers.

what he said about having to feel the pain that we have caused others rings very true..i had similiar experience where was deeply pained by what i had done even though in this realm i didnt think was my actions were that bad. there was a sharpness and sensitivity that was not of this world however mercy and love was also present

I was also intrigued with all the Jesus and biblical references Yogananga and his gurus freely quote. The interweaving of early Christianity and Hinduism was a surprise. Peace...

Just to clarify; Eben doesn't say he had an NDE. What happened is his brain was not functioning because of his meningitis. He was clinically "brain dead". If we need our brain to hallucinate, how could he hallucinate if his brain was not functioning. So he deduced that we have consciousness outside of the brain. I think science is in the process of being able to explain that, but his book is interesting because he has experienced it. Anyway I don't understand all this backlash he is simply describing his experience.
I recently revisited the details of memory formation. Memory formation in the brain occurs in a specific way. First there is working memory. It occurs in the prefrontal cortex, and can call upon long term memories that are store in various parts of the brain for reference. Recalled long term memory and working memory both make up short term memory. Anyone that has tried to remember a phone number knows that small term memory needs to be practiced a few times in order for it to become a long term memory.
Here we are talking about a relatively simple combination of seven numbers and still it can be difficult to recall them without practicing them over and over. Think of how difficult it is to recall a computer password when it is not used often enough.
Dreams are difficult to recall for the same reason; we hold them in working memory but rarely process them out into long term memory.
Alexander's story raises several questions about how the processing of his mental event resulted in long term memories since, by his own admission, his brain was "destroyed."
This would mean he had no working memory, no ability to recall long term memory, and no ability to process these short term memories into long term memory.
Second, we might ask when did his mental event of his occur during his ordeal? It certainly would seem as if it needs to have occurred during the recovery period if we are to accept that he has memories.

There is evidence that a the upper brain stem, pons and midbrain, is involved core consciousness, and that consciousness is present even in children born with a cerebral cortex.

The cerebral cortex is divided into four sections, called "lobes": the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe.
Frontal Lobe- associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem solving
Parietal Lobe- associated with movement, orientation, recognition, perception of stimuli
Occipital Lobe- associated with visual processing
Temporal Lobe- associated with perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, and speech
I search for Greyson's account of this girl and found a reference to it in his book, "Irreducible Mind" but few detail are provided about who this girl actually was.
In 1980, Roger Lewin published an article in Science, "Is Your Brain Really Necessary?" about the research of John Lorber who had made a similar claim, and which Greyson refers to in his book. That research was later dismissed, "During a TV program about the student, Lorber later stated that he "was only half serious."
The bottom line is that there is only anecdotal evidence to this point.

Theodore Hoppe This proposed "neuropsychologocal basis for spirituality" simply is a non-answer to NDE's/ADE's etc..etc. There are too many pieces of the NDE puzzle that don't and simply cannot add up to that the brain is causing these NDE's and ADE's on its own. Sorry.

How did you arrive at your determination? You have not provided any details about what you mean by the "many piece of the NDE puzzle."
I wonder if is possible that Eben took drugs in 2008 and I feel exactly as he felt then but I feel it all in 2014.
Can the time and space he is talking about from that moment be the same time and MY moment from now? Did he have a vision of my life 10 years later? What a weird situation I got myself into just by loving a man I never met.
There’s so many things I’d like to say, that it’s going to be difficult for me summarize the most important. I should 1st say that I have no doubt that this man’s experience was very real and there was obviously a reason for why he had this experience and survived to share it. The only thing that’s troublesome to me, and what I’m trying very hard to reconcile, although I’m sure that he’s also wanting to instill an inclusiveness to all spiritual beliefs in their concepts of God. But unfortunately I can’t think of a way to accomplish that completely, because in his enthusiasm of not wanting to offend anyone, he’s also denying the spiritual beliefs of the largest religion in the world, who basically for the most all believe in the gospels message as the inspired word of God, in that Jesus Christ willingly died on the cross for the atonement of mankind’s sins, and so it’s because of his sacrifice that we have a pathway to heaven. As well as Satan & evil are very real and Jesus spoke of hell more than he did of heaven. Although, I or anyone else saying that obviously doesn’t make it true, and no one is forced to believe it, but what if it is true? And that’s the point, but why he didn’t also experience that truth like so many other’s did in their NDE testimony’s I don’t know. I can only imagine that the explanation is the same as he gave for why some people experienced hellish NDE’s, he said that they just didn’t get that far yet. And the one’s we’ve heard anyway we’re eventually rescued by the Lord. And I would hope that not everyone has to experience a hellish NDE first, because most didn’t. But I believe the bottom line is, rejecting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the worst of all possible options.

Jesus didn’t teach reincarnation he taught resurrection. There is a big difference between them. Reincarnation is coming back as something else and resurrection is being raised back to life as yourself in spirit without flesh and blood. No one with flesh and bones can enter heaven but your soul, which your conscience is part of.

Look, I am not trying to explain away all this and I have not read his book, but... is it not possible he had this experience right before his brain stopped functioning? I mean, a dream might seem to take on days, but that doesn't mean that the physical event also has to take on days... so just because Eben was clinically dead and had no brain activity, does not mean that the brain could not have insinuated the dream right before all brain activity ceased.

holya69 No I don't, although I like watching lectures by scholars on various topics. I don't see what that has to do with my questioning of Alexander's evaluation of his experience though. Like I said, I am not trying to explain his experience away, I am just saying that I'd like to get some substantation on why the explanation I gave is improper to explain the data...
dont be put off by this being in a church it is not religious but a wonderful story of a mans understanding of the spirit and science.
I am put off by the wood carvings. The symbology needs to be more apparent. At first I thought it was a presentation from an intellectual institution like Harvard or Yale. I thought, hmmm, I feel very privileged to be viewing this presentation. Then halfway in, when I realized it was a stuffy and dogmatic church, I felt sick to my stomach.
I wonder if Dr Alexander was ego conscious and remembered about his family and this world during the journey through the heaven.
i dont think we get re-incarnated. if we did, we would all have multiple sets of parents. as far as kids having contact with past lives, that could be answered more simply, by just assuming that somehow there are times in which we can access a part of the consciousness field that is not our own.

He has major credentials. What a unique position he is in. I have trouble believing such stuff. I wasn't atheist and is a young teen now we moved into a harder place is demon stuff used to get done there people used to do devil worship or something we got told. We didn't believe anything we didn't see parents were very atheist and such scientific. Well yeah things happen and something was trying to suck the life force out of us or the souls out of us I don't know this thing was coming in the middle of the night creaking walking right up next to our bed sounds just like a person creaking up breathing on it sometimes and I mean wake it up feel like something is there and cover my head with a blanket and fall back asleep but then having nightmares and night terrors about being pulled down and having something trying to suck the life out of me and dreams are running for my life from these horrific things and and bad stuff starts happening around the house seeing red glowing eyes and dark forms and feeling these feelings of dread and doom friends and people come over having horrific instances and flashes and Visions seeing things at night taking off never want to come back at night again you know. I'd like to have thought it was a brain cancer or schizophrenia but it wasn't. Other people have related going through the same things that I was going through at the time but I hadn't told anybody here and he's being called and hearing and seeing certain things like the eyes so extremely extremely bizarre and that really added to the horrifyingness of it all and feeling of evil and horrible feelings. I eventually went up to Catholic Church during day weather clothes prayed for my life it seemed to sell things down and I started praying more and sticking with the Bible more and I kind of got less loan so I moved out. But since then I've had some other houses that were haunted by dead people. Wasn't too bad I didn't have another house with an X that was super horrifying we think it was actually something was just coming to us cuz it wasn't there when we first moved in this is just going over started seeing dark forms on the wall like something was trying to come through the wall I was just it's just horrifying and she was the type that didn't want to believe but by this point realize it was real but yeah we were super horrified some of their noises were hearing her names be called sometimes other times we were hearing things like help me up at night and the voice was so deep so low tone it did not sound human it was super horrifying man. No one is being tough at this point I'd have gotten used to so much stuff through my life and sounds of choking right next to me started to happen like somebody was being choked right there next to me with horrifying and I went upstairs and I'm trying to lay them next to my ex and she's asleep and I can feel like something is that right there on the side of me right next to the bed and I'm trying to keep turned away from it keep the blanket over my head and cover in my hand over my ear and I can hear them even through that. It is super horrible I've had much of various stuff going on here there since then nowadays living with my family outside of town 42 we have some mystery health problems like a lot of people that are sensitives and or it live around paranormal stuff if you're watching The Dead Files that's a lot of stuff that I've gone through and people I know have gone through and health problems always seem to be a thing with people who deal with the Paranormal on a regular basis. I haven't ever learned how to really protect myself or do this you do that and I'm going to try to get on that cuz that seems to be a thing but I know there's salt and tar water having things blessed stuff that people should do protect themselves never mess with the Ouija board and never try to call anything out or do anything to get the attention Supernatural and you shouldn't go like ghost hunting with random peoples and various places people do get followed home a lot of stuff like that. I've done some work checking out some paranormal places with people in the past I was never filed home but I ran into some horrifying stuff here there some human Spirits came extremely powerful and it can hurt you and even kill you it's real and demons you don't even want to know how powerful they are and then there's extra dimensional entities like shadow people and there's a lot of other similar to that extra dimensional so it's benign some of it is just as bad as demonic.

Mary Patterson Exactly, I sent that video to a number of atheists and they have every objection except they never say Vicki is lying. We can tell genuine testimony when we hear it. Her testimony is a love story, the two things she recognized were her hair and her wedding ring, then her body. Her testimony "rings" true, she would have been touching it and feeling it as a new bride, the same with her hair. That video is a love story!

I'm very suspicious of this encounter, did you go through a life review by Jesus, Satan is the Father of lies. Since you weren't born again...Jesus said unless you are born again you cannot see heaven. I had a incredible intimite relationship with Jesus and rebelled and died and went to hell, horror that can't be described. My experience lasted close to 10 days. God gives us these testimonials , just like the Shroud of Turin, to show us how much he loves us and we should have no doubt on his truth. There are also hellish testimonials that speak thar ther are places for people like Hitler, just as Jesus testified about. Listen to these testimonials, but also read the Bible and any book based strictly on love, so what book has a God-man being born in to the human race and sacrificed to take us to heaven? It's all based on sacrificial love, because to love is not killing, but rather suffering to give it. No suicide bombers wanting to take your life, but a love that wants to give you life as Jesus said.

I believe what happened to Eben. But I can't help where my mind goes as I ponder Eben's experience. For some reason the starving people come to my mind. The severely starving children and their severely starving mom with no milk in her breasts. Those children who suffer in agony ONLY LIVING WAITING TO DIE IN STARVATION HELL. I wonder about them. I wonder WHY this is? My mind see's these lives as pointless in an afterlife. Why do small children die of starvation everyday? The problem of this arises. Also, I believe that one of the reasons for the many disparities that exist at this time is the result man-kinds love affair with the ego. He had a very real experience no doubt, which would be foolish to reject given the many millions that have experienced the same thing, but I think intelligent viewers should also make the distinction here between his own commentary about what he experienced, and the actual other--worldly experience itself…meaning, that he has developed his own opinion about the experience, which is to be expected, but its naïve and incomplete at best, and doesn’t agree with the most basic reality of the human experience of good and evil and the evidence that the Creator has already presented to humanity. He says it's not about "any one religion" and that anything that "divides people" does not represent this loving god. I agree with respect to this account and other accounts depicted of NDE that they are one small view of a much bigger picture. I've just retread your post and I also agree that Jesus is God. But he has many names and this is where I have a different view to yours. To the Christians he is Jesus but don't forget he did not form the religion or name it. He was a Jew. The OT originates from the Torah, an ancient Hebrew text, full of mysticism written by Mystics. He is known as Allah by the Muslims, Buddha Krishna He is God to all nations. It is a little arrogant of the Christians to assume ownership of God, but so do the Muslims. There are many many holy people who are not Christian, wise scholars of other traditions who follow a path of peace and forgiveness and who follow the word of God with greater comprehension than most Christians.
There is evil and it does exist but most theologian scholars agree that of the few quotes in the NT that are most likely to be authentic Jesus non of them mention judgement to hell for lack of belief and in Mathew he gives a long list of things that will put you in his good books but none suggest faith in him, simply he asks for us to love our neighbour forgive our enemies feed the poor etc.,
Hell exists for those who have made that choice and being evil is that choice. There are some seriously obnoxious fundamental Christians who do not display the attributes he asks from us but many non Christians who do.
Heaven is beyond the reach of most of us, paradise is the next best thing. His mansions extend from the lowest to the highest, most of us will fit in somewhere, Christian Muslim Buddhist Hindu et al.

NDE is a possibility. However it does not answer the link between our freedom to choose and accountability. We should be accountable for what we do in this life. Physical death universality logically proves that there is something within us which survives our death. He has a point on consciouness.
