    Doesn't Woll have to clear waivers if they try to send him down to the minors? And there's basically zero chance of him clearing waivers. So he has to start off the season as the backup.

      I think if you look at Jones' contract, it was designed to discourage him being picked up on waivers. I'm not too sure how many teams like the idea of paying their #3 $875,000 to play in the AHL, but it can't be too many. Doesn't make Jones waiver proof, but it skews the odds heavily that way.

    You are a knowledgeable ‘HOCKEY GUY’ for sure and you’ve done a decent recap of the upcoming season. As a lifelong Leafs fan (since the early ‘60’s) I have watched this team be annually mismanaged for a variety of reasons. Currently they have a millstone around their necks with an $11,000.00 contract with Tavares. He’s a capable player but nowhere near worth that figure. With a no trade, no move clause, they won’t have cap space until he’s gone. Dubas spent like a drunken sailor since he took the reins and without moves to correct that, we fans will be left wanting. The defense is a far cry from what’s required to contend. None of the top 4 forwards is the type of personality/player needed to put a team on their backs and make everyone better. Florida management did what they needed to do, Vegas built a great defense. Leafs haven’t done either of those things, MLSE seems content to sign NAMES but not those types who are playoff guys. They need to shed Tavares (shouldn’t have signed him at that # anyway). Grit can’t just be added and expected to change the makeup of Matthews and Marner. Neither of those guys play gritty hockey that’s required for the postseason. I don’t give a rip about finishing 1st in the regular season, I and so many other Leafs fans are only interested in a cup run. CAN’T BE DONE WITH THIS ROSTER AT THE SALARIES THEY’VE BEEN “GIVEN”. Dubas is the new BALLARD but for slightly different reasons !

    The MVP for the Maple Leafs is their Capologist if they find a way to make this team cap compliant to start the season. Toronto plays a strong puck possession game that limits quality scoring chances and means they can get by with kind of all right goaltending, which is what they've had for a long time. With the other playoff perennials in their division taking a step back, the Leafs look like they'll win the division. I like the additions the Leafs made for toughness, but this team is probably leading the league in no trade/move contracts. It'll be interesting to see what they can do at the trade deadline and how that works out for them in the playoffs. This could be their year to get to the Finals, with all their biggest divisional rivals slowly crumbling around them.

    Interesting comment about playing with less of a roster due to salary cap issue. Is a lousy 4th line better than a third line getting more ice time? 3 good lines and a spare 10th forward for PK, goon duties, or game injuries. Regarding the idea that the defense is bad. I think on average, it's pretty good as the numbers show, but it has a tendency to have major brain farts and to fall apart when it counts. That's harder to tell from the advanced stats, but we've all seen it happen. It was Steve Dangle who pointed out a while ago that, since that 2013 playoff loss, Toronto is the team with the most games lost lost after holding a 4-1 lead. That's a weird stat to pull out, but its the one that demonstrates the most the notion that Toronto's defense is bad.

Carlson and Orlov, Pietrangelo and Theodore, Sergachev and Hedman, Pietrangelo and Parayko.....

      Bruh John Carlson is and always has been ass defensively
      Reilly was one of the Leafs' best players against the Lightning...absolutely clutch and electric out there. And Brodie is sound defensively. Wild how everyone went from talking about how comfortable they felt when Brodie is on the ice, to begging for him to be traded when he wasn't even that bad last season.
      I feel like Brodie is probably gonna be the cap casualty since there's very few players they could trade to get them under the cap that weren't just signed/re-signed or are core pieces. Unless they trade Nylander, but that would be a massive mistake. Regardless, you'll all realize how important Brodie was if he gets traded...

    Just let me vent... I'll be 41 years old this Xmas. Obviously no Cups. The thing that gets me is, not even a finals appearance. I count 4 trips to the conf finals. So that leaves the majority of the past 50+ seasons as losing in the first round or not making playoffs altogether. Last season Leafs finally won a playoff round. Just to get absolutely dummied in the 2nd round vs Florida. The team we had last year was the best Leafs team of my life. And we were not even close. I get that the cup is the hardest championship to win in pro sports but, my god this is brutal. Which is why I can't stand Steve Dangle. He profits off every loss. He does NOT care. He is laughing to the bank. Us real fans do not make an income off how badly this franchise actually is. I will cheer loudly every year. And hate on all that is garbage on this team.
    I am not looking forward to this season. Our roster took a huge nosedive off a cliff. Besides Bertuzzi (who I am not sold on) I don't care about all the changes. This team is not nearly has good as last year. How do you get excited?
    Only positive is this, with Matthews resigning it almost guarantees he passes Mats Sundin on the most goals in franchise history list. Matthews has 299 needs exactly 420. Easy peeeezy! If he resigns again will be the first Leaf to score 500 as a Leaf.
    That's fire! And exciting.
    I hope I am wrong, but not bloody likely. Another 1st round elimination. This is why losing to the Habs hurt so much. Leafs will never get another shot like that again.

    I was just reading up on how the cap works and I picked up on something The Hockey Guy said. If a player is a healthy scratch he still counts towards the Cap. A team MUST submit a list of 18 skaters and a mandatory 2 goalies before each game but that does not matter towards the Cap. A team has a full time roster list that is submitted before the season starts of up to 23 players not including LTIR candidates. That list of players count towards the cap. It doesn't matter if 3 of those players are healthy scratches the cap hit still counts. The only 3 ways to erase a cap hit is to place a player on LTIR, trade or put him on waivers.

    • @stupidas9466
      @stupidas9466 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect. There are a lot more conditions and scenarios that apply which are too complicated to get into here. However, if you've paid attention to past years you'll have seen teams dress only 16/17 skaters late in the season in order to remain cap compliant.

    • @johndesousa7379
      @johndesousa7379 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stupidas9466 Those rules were official rules by the NHL to keep teams from having half a roster. It would be way too easy to remain cap compliant. Leafs will be cap compliant and they may not even need to utilize LTIR. Martin jones was acquired with the intent of sending him down, pontus holmberg is waivers exempt so he can be sent down without being placed on waivers (no chance of another team picking him up) and Ryan Reeves has a 1.3 million contract for 3 years and he is 36 years old. This is by design. He will be put on waivers but he will clear. No one will want to pay the contract. That would cover the 3 million they are over. Problem solved and they will have 20 players dressed for opening night.

      @@stupidas9466 Here is the actual rule. - Active Roster
      The Active Roster is the 23-man maximum roster of players in the NHL whose cap hits count against the upper limit. The minimum allowed is 18 skaters and two goalies:
      (b) Clubs are not permitted to Loan Players where the result of such Loan(s) would reduce the Club’s Active Roster below eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goaltenders. However, Clubs will not be required to Recall Players to maintain the minimum eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goaltenders on days which they do not play an NHL Game, provided that the deficiency below those thresholds is a result of an injury that has caused the removal of such disabled Player from the Active Roster.

    Toronto won't miss Murray. Please don't play him. I still don't get why they got him. They need a great goalie .

      Bertuzzi is a year removed from a 30 goal season. He had 16 points in 21 games after the trade to Boston, then had 5 goals and 5 assists in the first round against Florida. Max Domi had 20 goals last season to go with 56 points overall. He has 13 points in 19 playoff games for Dallas last spring.
      Bunting had 23 goals and 49 points overall. In the playoffs, he had 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 games.
      The Leafs, on paper, upgraded their depth.

      @@TheHockeyGuy that's actually really interesting. i didn't know bertuzzi was that good, i guess i let my hate blind me. im an avs fan though so ill never cheer for that idiot, especially after he suckered Calvert from the bench...
      i think domi probably had a career year last year but it will be interesting to see him in Toronto. i feel like with the connection between his father and the leafs, the pressure is gonna be huge for him.
      thanks for all the awesome videos, keep up the great work!
