Can I use this to make a DVR by connecting the OUTPUT HDMI from my cable box to the adapter then record the content on my PC? Would any type of movie content be block or prevented from passing through or would everything pass through just like the HDMI line were connected to a TV.

@@FireTVSticks i purchased the hdmi and downloaded the obs system for MAC and i can see video but cannot hear audio. i noticed that in audio settings my Desktop drop down only says 'disabled'. i do not hav option to select 'default. i also noticed that once u selected ur the firestick device 'usb device' i did not have option to scroll down and select 'custom' audio. do u know if this should work with MAC users or is there a better program for MACusers? thanks

For those having trouble seeing Firestick in OBS and Windows, makes sure in OBS you have "USB video" selected, AND "use custom audio device" checked. Also make sure the Windows "camera" option is enabled. If still no luck, makes sure "USB video" is visible in Windows Device Manager. Finally, if still no luck, exit OBS, then restart Firestick, and then restart OBS.
Now i know how to use a Firestick etc on a PC Without this excellent guide i would have been doing a lot of research to find out how to do it. The requirement to have to select the video and sound source in the software could perhaps be made easier with a single source option, but that is for the software developers to upgrade.
Didn't think this was going to need so many steps… I'm glad I have mine plugged into a TV, 😉But for people who only have a PC, this is some great advice ! BTW, OBS is an amazing free software, I use sometimes for my work and it's a lifesaver 😁
I was thinking of get a Firestick for my Raspberry Pi, as both HMDI ports on my bedroom TV are used with said Pi and my Sky Box. This was very useful thank you. As a boomer it seems to be rarer and rarer that we hear such a nicely spoken young person. Though with my Lancashire accent I was never one myself.

Without doing sound settings ... would this be a good way to load programs on firestick? Then remove and place back on your TV? Seems like having a keyboard and mouse would come in handy... especially when you have to troubleshoot an upload and on multiple firesticks! Would prob be able to save 90-95% of the time. Using the remote is a pain when you're trying to figure something out and not "computer savvy" So frustrating! Thank you for all you do. Little by little, I'm learning. ;)

Very easy to follow the set up. I've ordered a capture device to try this out on my laptop. Do you have to go thtough these steps each time you want to use your Firestick on the laptop? Also, when you're finished using it, is it just a matter of disconnecting and you're taken back to your normal laptop screen? Thanks!

For some reason I can't explain, using my Amazon Fire TV Cube produces a rattling and annoying sound on my laptop when I establish the video capture leaving me unable to enjoy it. But when I connect my Onn 4K Google TV Streaming Box to the laptop via the video capture card, everything works flawlessly. I really don't know why that happens with the Fire TV Cube.

OBS is great, but you can also use VLC to play hdmi capture.

Settings should be remembered and you will return to your laptop's desktop when finished.

I'm not sure about a Chromebook, sorry.
only time ive connected my firestick through USB was to sideload stuff to it so you can put repositories on it (as far as im aware not illegal as your not modifying software)
