Going back to 1977 and when I first saw Star Wars, Darth Vader's image and name invoked Death. He was Lord Death, or Death Father. Being a cyborg strengthened that image in my mind.
Costumes are part of the character. The Stormtroopers were supposed to be cyphers--so nobody would sympathize with those faceless servants of the Empire. Much like the gas masks of riot police during the Sixties depersonalized police, the lack of a human face made the Stormtroopers a faceless menace. Note that United Nation peacekeepers prefer to wear blue berets instead of blue helmets--one reason is that a beret leaves the face visible, and the UN trooper is human, but the helmet makes the peacekeeper a killer robot.

My favourite costume (apart from Vader) is the TIE pilot costume. It's funny but the F-35 Helmet looks almost like the Imperial pilot helmet, so there's a bit of foreshadowing going on there, I reckon. lol

Tarkin in fuzzy slippers, it would be great to have those pictures.
The Imperial Guard helmets look very similar to WWII USN gunners helmets.
That was very interesting about the bug-like Vader mask being used as the droid in the sandcrawler. I always wondered about that and now I know.
I got a good chuckle when you said Vader's belt was held together on the inside with duct tape. It reminds me of the old joke of the Force is like duct tape, it has a light side and a dark side, and together they bind everything together.
Again, I loved this video and you did a great job with both of them. I found out a lot I didn't know.
You have a subscriber and I'm looking forward to watching your other videos.

Great video I was 10 when mom dad took my sister and I to See Star Wars back in 1977. It changed my life. I was a cub scout, weeblow and boy scout. A Marine Forced Recon sniper and a Police Officer! But I loved the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader! So cool!

If you look carefully, have you noticed that Vader's helmet looks like a Jedi hood? Almost certainly a coincidence, because Lucas hadn't decided what Jedi wear until the ROTJ (Obi-Wan wore Tatooine garb), but it is interesting how similar in design it is to their hoods.

It is also possible that the small wings on the Vader helmet were to be similar to the lugs on a M1916 Stahlhelm the lugs were used to add an extra plate to shield Stosstruppen in trench raids in WWI

    • @Costume_CO

Thank goodness you got it right in that Liz Moore, who tragically died before the movie came out, is rightfully credited as the maker of the Stormtrooper along with Muir. Andrew Ainsworth has tried for 30 years to steal credit for that, going as far as buying fan sculpted replicas and modifying and saying that's screen used from his sculp for the movie.

This is great! Any plans to cover the sequel trilogy? I’m particularly interested in the subtle callbacks to Vader and the Imperial uniforms in Kylo Ren and the First Order’s uniforms. The FO uniforms seem to be more streamlined and severely cut. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren’s costume is ragged and looks cobbled together to look as much like Vader as possible with materials at hand.

After recently getting into Hopi kachinas, I realized that most of George Lukas’ ideas for characters came from there. If you look into it it’s uncanny

  • @ronin47-ThorstenFrank

In your otherwise very good video you made a mistake on the history side.
You stated that German troops in WWI called Canadian troops as "Stormtroopers". There is, at least by my knowledge, no known statement of German troops calling Canadian soldiers in this way.* Also, the German soldier in WWII weren´t called Sturmtruppen. That´s a confusion of historical facts. "Sturmtruppen" were special elite formations during WWI that used tactics that were later used by the normal(!) German infantry units. The term did fall largely out of favor after WWI.
Also, I´m a bit unsure about the suit for Darth Vader and the Tie Fighter Pilots as motorcycle suits or simple black overalls.
The original Tie Suits look a lot like car racing suits - as well as, and must stress here probably (yes, I´m not sure), Darth Vader´s suit.
But, again, that´s more of an annoyance and pedantry by an history buff - most of the other info is good and correct.
As you seem to have a knack for the whole topic of costumes - have you any good sources for space suit designs in movies? I´m searching for years now but didn´t find any good and acceptable sources.
    * This is probably a Canadian propaganda myth like the naming of the U.S. Marines as "Höllenhunde" (Hellhounds or Devil Dogs) by German troops - there´s not a single evidence of that ever happening.

Great video, with a huge amount of detail.
1 point is completely wrong. The Germans already had Stormtroopers in 1915 and built on these units to create large numbers of Divisions of them in WW1. They didn't adopt the name from a moniker they certainly gave to the Canadian troops taking Vimy Ridge in 1917. It was in tecognition that they took that Ridge in 1 hour. The Stahlhelm was first issued in 1916.That's 1 year before you say, based on what the Yank author states, the Stormtroopers came into being.
