Sounds like you and Kelly kitty stay warm how you want and feel safe. It's all good :) When I lived in Texas in the winter I visited my friend that came from a large family that had very little money. Her mother would warm bricks or large stones in the oven, or in a fire while wrapped in aluminum. Next she would wrap them in thick towels or blankets and place them in the foot of her children's beds. I stayed the night a few times in the winter and stayed cozy warm. We are so used to commercial products we sometimes forget what was worked and used daily before our current technology. Thanks for sharing your heartwarming skills with us.
Dear Emi, you don't have to worry, you are a good and responsible person, especially when it comes to animals! thank you for your openness. Best wishes. next winter you will be nice and warm. Kind regards, Glenn 🔥

In your area heating is really optional. I think you were smart to save up the money and wait. Those heaters require electricity. That in itself is expensive. Don't worry about those that disagree. With almost 10K in subscribers... you will always have people who don't agree with you.... and a couple trolls.
From Alberta here... a few ideas for you. If you can find - one or two down quilts in a second hand store for yourself- then hang those blankets you have like a wall around the inside of the van to stop drafts.- - buy a pup tent and set it up ON your bed with all your bedding inside it ( it will retain your body heat like crazy in the small place you just made. - find a couple of good sized rocks while your out and about ( I use a soapstone plate from Japanese fondue) build a fire and heat the rocks ( if a soapstone or cast iron heat on your grill) wrap in a towel and put between blankets ( especially in a pup tent🤗) - there are tent heaters on Amazon for cheap that also sit on your camp stove or over candles and disperse the heat out wards. - marks work wearhouse sells thermal socks that will definitely keep your feet warm while sleeping ( buy 2 pairs 1 for bed, one for days) ✝️⚓️❤️
I assumed you didn’t have a heater other than your van’s when I noticed your breath in a couple of vlogs. We should all be satisfied with anything you care to share in your own time. I doubt anyone here is offended by your deflection of a sensitive issue. Van builds are a work in progress. You’ll get there. If you need any extra help, we’ll be there when we can. Just let us know. Cheers from Vancouver eh!
From what I see, you have received several positive comments and so I hope you feel more confident on this issue. You have a perspective that is valuable, so I appreciate you sharing this
There's no question in my mind that you take very good care of Kelly. It's obvious in her appearance and demeanor. She is very well loved!! I'm sorry you felt afraid to say that you have no built in heater. I know how judgemental some people can be as I've faced the same since living in my van with my dogs. Animals have fur for a reason and it keeps them pretty warm when it gets cold out. They grow winter coats, and then they shed it when it starts getting warmer. They're better at adapting to climate than we are. Anyway, you've got things under control. You don't need to explain anything you don't want to. 🙂👍🐾💜
-20F last night. Ran the Chinese heater all night on high. Did run the engine fo 30 min also. Was fine. 5kw heater love this thing will use most of a tank over 18 hours.
You are hardy! I’m working on a heating solution at the moment also but an electric blanket is such a treat. I’m living in my van for just over a year and it’s funny when I watch you I realize how much I love this lifestyle - don’t really know why? something to do with simplicity/minimalism and freedom. Less barriers between me and nature (weather) and other people. It’s not boring! Best wishes to you!
started out with a buddy wet heat but warm .scared me a little .shut it off most times at night .this year I bought a desil heater .I drive a savana so had help to install a 10 ltr tank on the inside of my back door .really love it now .one of the best purchases I made .But also when you live in van you get more used to cold .electric blanket hmm didn't think the jackery would run that .thanks for sharing .
Emi, I just saw video you made ten months ago thanking your subscribers and Chrome for video he made on your van tour and the wonderful, loving comments you received. Sweet lady, just want you to know you are an amazing, strong person. Don't sell yourself short, you are such an honest, sweet , strong lady and an inspiration to everyone that sees your video. I am 82 years old and admire you for getting out of an unhealthy relationship ,sure it took a lot to go on your own, but are showing others it can be done, doing it on your own, showing others how little you really need. I love watching your videos, you make my day. Take care sweet one and be safe. Mama Jean from South Texas
I have learned so much from Van life folks that help me be comfortable when we lose power here in a sticks in bricks. Because of Van life vloggers I purchased a 300w pure sine wave power source, an awesome jump starter that we can tap into for charging things, then picked up a jackery 160. I ditched my propane double burner stove and got a singe butane burner and a box of butane cans. I have Lucy lights for night time. Went 5 days without power and was able to work remotely from home. Now, I just need to find those car blankets or heating pads. Great ideas. I did use hand warmers during the outage but I like the idea of heating up the bed and can heat myself up so I can keep typing while working!
Pay people no mind, you do you and all will be fine. Clearly Kelly is a super happy kitty, as she has a great Mum taking care of her. ❤️. Enjoy 2 days of sunshine ☀️ rain is coming...Hi Kelly!❤️🥰
Emi you’re an inspiration to me! My courage is building up every time I watch one of your videos. I have convinced myself that I couldn’t make it on my own. So I’ve stayed in a bad marriage for almost 22 years now. I feel like there’s still hope for happiness when I watch your videos. Thank you for being honest!
It doesn't matter about whether you have a "heater" or not my friend. As long as YOU and Kelly are warm that's what matters. I love watching your videos, your my favorite!! Keep them coming!! Your doing an excellent job of filming and music, everything!! I Really admire you! Your a strong person. May the Lord bless you.
The 12v blankets are much more energy efficient. I use mine to warm the bed, also. I am the same way about cold feet, means no sleep! I do have some heavy wool socks because the floor of my camper seems always cold in the winter. I do have 2 small rugs I put on the floor in winter to make it less cold. I am thinking about a diesel heater also for next winter as they seem pretty reliable. Great idea using the hand warmers for your feet and for Kelly's bed. One of my friends uses them for her feet, also. (She also told me she tried one in her bra!!😳 Not a good idea, she learned. Luckily, she did not get a burn.) I had figured out that you did not have a heater in your van, but it is sad that people make you feel guilty or have to tell a lie because they would be judgemental. Your climate there is a relatively mild winter. This is your third winter in a vehicle. You have figured out how to do this safely and be comfortable where you live in the winter. Winter is almost done for another year! Happy and safe travels!! Big hugs to you and to Kelly!!
we are so spoiled today with our modern comforts. My mother used to tell me stories about her father harnessing up the horse to the sleigh and her mother heating a brick in the fireplace to put under their buffalo robe cover and going into town for supplies. Her upstairs bedroom was heated only by the stove pipe going through her room to the roof.
I understand why you didn't wanna say you didn't have a heater in van people can be judgmental and make comments people just don't wanna hear or read whatever it's you're van stay safe stay comfortable.
While my son was serving in Afghanistan 🇦🇫 I sent him boxes every 5 days or so. Walmart marked down the hand & foot warmers after hunting season. So I bought them all and sent then overseas to my son. He spent quite a bit of time in the mountains in winter, so he really appreciated those warmers.
The Wave3 is quite good. I have one for my mother for emergencies. And I have another in my living room for the - 20 degree months. I have a big tank. No more dangerous than green bottles.
You are in better shape than I am at the present time. Not being used to freezing cold here in Texas I now have busted water pipes so no water till I can get plumber here and something happened to my central heat unit but had no power for over 8 hours so the house got very cold. It was 12 degrees but now up to 26. So, don’t worry what other people say. Do what you need to do. I’ve got everyone giving me their opinions but I will handle my problems with how I see best. Stay warm and good luck!
I, too, use a heating pad as it takes less power and turns itself off in 2 hours. If I wake up cold I turn it back on. It takes just seconds to heat up. And I use soft socks with wool socks as the outer layer. Just do whatever works best for you. Happy travels!
Thank you for sharing, since you’ve been doing this for so long I never once thought that you did not have things set up the way you needed them to be. This is your life and your home and you live it the best way that you know how.
Your cat has a better life than most cats will ever have! Don't make other people's problems your problems. I don't have heat in my van instead I use a - 40 sleeping bag and start up my van once in awhile and use the car heater
Hey, I've got a -40 sleeping bag in my van as well. Also I have a couple of smaller solar batteries that will keep a heating pad off and on throughout the night if I needed it. I live in Wisconsin where lately we've had a couple of days where the temperature never got above 0 degrees F all day.
If you put the heating blanket under all of the other blankets then you can turn the heating blanket on for just an hour and it will stay warm for the whole night
Your cat Kelly is lucky to have such a loving and dedicated owner. People are very cossetted today with every expensive heat source throughout the mildest weather! And they spend a lot of money doing it. It isn't necessarily healthy, to live in over-heated air like that throughout the colder months. Having an electric blanket, and being warm in bed, is hugely important. I'm sure you and kitty are cozy at nights, and that is the most important thing. The van gives you the shelter and insulation from the harsh elements you need. And of course you and Kelly are warmth for each other. I discovered your channel this week, and am full of admiration for you. You are bravely living an authentic life, taking a few chances and most important and admirable of all, you are relying on yourself. This is a life-changing journey you've taken! It's one best suited to youth and health. I wish more young women had your courage. This time of solo 'van life' is teaching you so much about yourself. You must learn to trust, respect and rely on YOU. That's so positive and valuable, and will stand you in good stead forevermore. As the great Oscar Wilde said: "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance". You Go Girl, you are a great role model for so many watching, and have the support and admiration of good people around the globe! Much love to you and Kelly from a fan in England. XXX
You’re acclimated to the weather and have great options for staying warm so no worries! I think you’re wise to wait till you have the money. So many people today automatically purchase goods without thinking of the financial consequences. That is the reason they’re in debt. I admire how you have thought this through. 🥰 Stay warm!
I love watching your video Emi! Thank you for sharing your life story with us. You seem to be enjoying your van life with your cat. It’s an awesome simple life.
I sandwich my 12volt blanket between blankets maybe 2 blankets (microfleece n a heavier blanket) on top of elec blanket. Stays warmer much much longer when ive slept in my car in colo mts!!!!🐈🐈🐈🐈💞💞💞💞
I put my electric blanket UNDER my fitted sheet. It creates a warm wall between top and bottom before I jump in. I have a car blanket and they are not very warm and take forever to heat up. Might work better if you leave it plugged in a while before bed. I just have one in my car as a “just in case” item.
Aww... don't you worry about others opinions. You are giving kitty an amazing life! I'm glad that you're in an area that doesn't get extremely cold. Hope to meet you someday when the borders open back up.
I may have a chance to live in Vancouver and Victoria for a year and am considering sleeping in my SUV instead of renting. I think between buying a small Jackery, a truckers low draw heating blanket and those hand warmer packs I should be able to survive the winter. Thanks for your helpful tips.
Try adding the roll reflectives below sheet, topped with blanket. When you lay on top your body heat warms it and it warms you. My kitty, baby girl, snuggles under the covers, laying on my arm, where she warms from my body.
Do what feels comfortable for you and your furry friend. When I get my van, I'm going to start off with UCO candle lantern on Amazon..I've watched videos where it can heat up a small space and the candles burn up to 12 hours for some...that's my plan and I live on the East Coast where the winters are pretty cold...stay safe!
I think you should get mini fireplace like cubic mini made in Quebec. How many times is it raining out and can't make a fire? The light, the snap crackle pop, the heat. Would be so cozy.
You can get those handwarmers as rechargeable (maybe on ebay or amazon) - we have them, since my gf suffers from Raynaud's syndrome. Just give them a quick boil, and they are ready to go again
I like you went without heat when I lived in my car. On a cold rainy night my cat and I snuggled and were still cold. Evert 2 hours woke up and turned the heat on in the car. A week later the same thing bought 2 of the 3: wick candles . We were good till the sun came up. One in the back and one up front. It dried the dampness which warmed the air a little
I like the heating pad and electric blanket and Jackery idea. I personally use the hand warmers for my feet, and crack open a window and use my remote starter key fob to run the engine heater for 20 minutes every 3 hours, when it's extremely cold. I haven't smelled or been bothered by any vehicle fumes in the past 25 years or so. It works for me!
Hi Emi. Whenever you decide to get a heater, can you make a video of the installation? I think that will be great content. I would love to see how difficult or easy it is to install. Thank you so much. Take care Stay safe!!!
You are very ressouceful and take very good care of yr kitty. When I worry about what people think ...not very often, I think then when I Will be on my dying bed I will not give a hoot about these people!!
@@ThecatladyVAN Thanks. We've had 8 hours of power today and ran the heat, charged all our devices and used the internet. It was great. Stay warm up in the great white north.
A great vid as always...While watching a came-up with this tip....Place a shelf across the inside edges of your original roof and you will have a lot more storage space for things inside your Van! There is soooo much wasted space in the back of your Van above your bed in the high top just waiting to be used!
I purchased a happybuy diesel heater, bench tested flawlessly. I've also got a wood stove I built out a 20 pound propane bottle that might find its way into my build. It takes some room, but free heat can't be beat👌
Extremely valuable info!! Thank you 🙏 this helps me moving forward with the basics!! Deciding if I need an additional heater can come later😊 ...I have the same heating pad and it generates a lot of heat so I’m set 💯
As long as it's not in freezing temperatures it's ok for kitty!! Many kitties stay out side all year round they have furr coats and are smart enough to find safety some where. It's the kitties that are domesticated that dont know where to shelter. Kelly kitty is just fine!!! Dont let it scare you even though some people would be uneducated about such things!! You are taking care of kitty just fine!
I found 2 different electric heaters that pull 200W. So my little battery pack can support it. I have a 12V electric blanket. I paid $20 Amazon, it's the size of a throw. I'm 5'2" so its fine for me. Heat rises. So put electric blanket under you. Then pile blankets on top of you. It gets -15, -20C here. The cat will keep you warm. Stay safe
I camp in Southern California in the winter. It can get below freezing and you can wake up in the high desert with snow in the morning. A 12v electric blanket is great. They have a timer that shuts them off. You might wake up and have to hit the button to get a second shot of heat. It is worth the price.
I grew up on a farm in a cold house...quilts, quilts, and more quilts. Country Girls Can Survive!!!💃💃💃
You worry too much about what everyone else thinks of you. Don't. You are smart, resourceful and resilient. Don't live your life concerned with others opinions. It's your life. Live the way you want.

Cats are very good at regulating their body temperature. I bet kitty is nice and cozy in your van. You are a very good cat mom❤️
Cats are cold natured. They prefer the warmth which is why you always see them sitting in direct sunlight

At the store , in the camping section , look for the blue foam roll. About $10 . 1/2" thick 72" X 24"
Put this under your bed sheet.
Very warm.

Awwww. Your such a good Mom. Try to get your hands on a wool blanket. LOVE them. Super warm.
My grandmother used to put a red brick on her gas stove top and heat it up. After turning the gas off the brick radiated heat for hours.

- buy a pup tent and set it up ON your bed with all your bedding inside it ( it will retain your body heat like crazy in the small place you just made.
- find a couple of good sized rocks while your out and about ( I use a soapstone plate from Japanese fondue) build a fire and heat the rocks ( if a soapstone or cast iron heat on your grill) wrap in a towel and put between blankets ( especially in a pup tent🤗)
- there are tent heaters on Amazon for cheap that also sit on your camp stove or over candles and disperse the heat out wards.
- marks work wearhouse sells thermal socks that will definitely keep your feet warm while sleeping ( buy 2 pairs 1 for bed, one for days)

A Kitty sweater will keep her warm..🐈❤
I may have a chance to live in Vancouver and Victoria for a year and am considering sleeping in my SUV instead of renting. I think between buying a small Jackery, a truckers low draw heating blanket and those hand warmer packs I should be able to survive the winter. Thanks for your helpful tips.
Girl same! I hate sleeping bags lol. This is very helpful as I've been wondering what to do myself, thank you for sharing!
Make sure you have Antifreeze in that radiator sweetheart :) x
Joseph would love to help you install a diesel heater and he is very knowledgeable
I already ask him so many questions about it. He is a very good help
Umm... maybe ask Joseph first lol!!!😂
Dude... That may be true but I wouldn't presume upon his extreme generosity up to this point...😉
Currently toasty in bed in my self build the van, watching your video. Always lovely to watch, thanks for sharing your tips. x
Well am glad you find ways to stay warm.
I only use my heater when it's around freezing or lower. Otherwise having proper clothes and blankets is enough
Try adding the roll reflectives below sheet, topped with blanket. When you lay on top your body heat warms it and it warms you. My kitty, baby girl, snuggles under the covers, laying on my arm, where she warms from my body.
Thanks for the clear story of your heating solutions. I learned that those hand warmers are good for many purposes. Be well.
I love those ideas for staying warm in a van.
Glad you have a well-thought-out plan for heat and warmth. Great video !!
Thank you. I'm that type of person who needs plan B just in case something happens
Always do what works best for you 😊
Thank you Mike. Have a beautiful day my friend
I think you should get mini fireplace like cubic mini made in Quebec. How many times is it raining out and can't make a fire? The light, the snap crackle pop, the heat. Would be so cozy.
Great idea! Sounds super cozy.❤️👍
Pretty good moment
We are lucky to have a mild climate! The hand warmers are great, we use those too. Nice set up 👍 perfect spot for the kitty ❤️
Happy you and Kitty are staying warm. 😊
You can get those handwarmers as rechargeable (maybe on ebay or amazon) - we have them, since my gf suffers from Raynaud's syndrome. Just give them a quick boil, and they are ready to go again
Thank you for sharing! You're a strong survivor, and great cat mom! See you next time!😃❤👍
Hi Cat. Stay safe and well. Three years is cool.
Cats have fur ,,,,,they are fine,,,you got this
I like you went without heat when I lived in my car. On a cold rainy night my cat and I snuggled and were still cold. Evert 2 hours woke up and turned the heat on in the car. A week later the same thing bought 2 of the 3: wick candles . We were good till the sun came up. One in the back and one up front. It dried the dampness which warmed the air a little
You got to becareful burning candles in a car. There was a lady that died doing that...
I’m glad to learn this!
Glad your staying warm!.....If there's a will, there's a way eh! All the best Emi!
great thinking. Wishing you all the best as the winter drags on.
Good morning! Have a great day today!
Good morning Don!
This was a nice video, and everything you said seems quite reasonable! You do you!!!
You are very ressouceful and take very good care of yr kitty. When I worry about what people think ...not very often, I think then when I Will be on my dying bed I will not give a hoot about these people!!
Helpful topic for us down in Texas - we're all living without power and heat right now.
I hope power and heat will come back soon
@@ThecatladyVAN Thanks. We've had 8 hours of power today and ran the heat, charged all our devices and used the internet. It was great. Stay warm up in the great white north.
I'm glad you're able to stay warm. I just presumed you didn't have a heater since I hadn't seen one.
placing a plastic tarp over yor bedding does wonders!
A down and feather duvet is really really really warm! More warm than a typical blanket, you might not even need an electric blanket.
A great vid as always...While watching a came-up with this tip....Place a shelf across the inside edges of your original roof and you will have a lot more storage space for things inside your Van! There is soooo much wasted space in the back of your Van above your bed in the high top just waiting to be used!
Really smart ideas to keep warm.
Thanks Val.
I'm happy you are staying warm and you're safe. Stay warm God bless you and kitty. 💖💖
Reflectix on your ceiling (since heat rises) would reflect your heat back down into your space.
Sounds cozy to me. Joseph will get you fixed up well, also.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate
In fact it would be great content because a lot of folks would like to see the install you would sleep so much better
