    Anyone with AA reading this: About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with alopecia areata which progressed into alopecia universalis and I had almost no hair anywhere on my body. My blood tests indicated extreme inflammation in my body. I had tried everything- JAK inhibitors weren't available to me back then. It was awful. Then I made lifestyle changes, worked on my mental health, worked on my gut health and eating nutrient dense unprocessed foods and I believe that all of that combined improved my chances of regrowing my hair. So if you want hope, I can say that doctors thought the likelihood of me regrowing my hair was slim to none. Been in remission for years thankfully. Hang in there! It is not hopeless.

    I had Alopecia Areata but I thought it was male pattern baldness at the time because it was localized at the crown. It became the size of a half dollar. It was super smooth and I found my self touching it often because it was so soft. It took about 9 months for my hair to grow back. My boyfriend was so sweet when he noticed it. He told me he’d still love me if I was bald 🥹

    I've been dealing with alopecia areata for a few years but this year was the worst since the patches appearead in places harder to hide like in my bangs. I'm constantly terrified at the idea of suddenly losing them all and it's so hard emotionally. You gave me answers that doctors i've seen never took the time to give me and i thank you for that.

      Good luck. There is hope. I lost almost all my hair on my entire body from alopecia areata and it regrew...a lot of people with autoimmune disease seem to have gut health issues for whatever reason. I highly recommend looking up ways to improve the gut microbiome if she experiences gut issues. For me I finally began to feel normal when my gut started healing...and my hair loss halted then began reversing.

    Love this and well said!! I got a spot of alopecia on my scalp and I’m an autoimmune patient with vitiligo and Hashimotos…. It grew back white and now regaining color after 2 years. I got it after a covid vaccine but at that time I also got pregnant so it’s hard to say which was the trigger for it. Thanks for shedding light that it’s not gluten or some sort of food intolerance, I dumped so much money into functional medicine for my vitiligo and it got me nowhere. I think my body was just going to regrow the hair and it had nothing to do with my super expensive supplements 😵‍💫:We need more physicians like you!

    When my daughter was 7 years old, she developed alopecia areata. At first, I thought she was cutting her hair at school. She was treated by a dermatologist with diprosome lotion, and thankfully, her hair did regrow. As a teenager, she was diagnosed with PCOS and her hair got thinner. This was in 2002. Since then, under the treatment of an endocrinologist and a dermatologist who specialized in hair loss, she has been applying Rogaine 5% twice a day, along with taking other oral medications.

    I was 25 when i was diagnosed with alopecia areata. I had one oval shaped bald spot on the back of my head. I was devastated and embarrassed. We did the wait and see method of hair regrowth. I also used rogaine on the bald patch to see if that would help regrowth happen faster. Luckily the hair did start growing back but i did experience another bald spot close to the original one within that same year. I was fortunate enough that my hair grew back and i havent experienced anymore bald patches. I am 37 now and was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and a vitamin b12 deficiency. Soooo this has definitely been a long health journey and theres still more i need to learn.

    Thank you Dr. Dray for covering this topic. I have thick healthy lush hair; about 7 yrs ago started to have alopecia areata on both of my side burn hairlines (by my ears) awful! Dermatologist did SQ injections of steroids on the skull & actual area of hair loss; it helped regrowth of the hair;
    all the blood work were normal. Then 4 yrs ago I was diagnosed with papillary Thyroid cancer (1/2 thyroid lobe is removed) Drs told me I may have had the cancer for ~10 yrs at that time.
    So I'm thinking thyroid malfunction had something to do with AA. Currently hair on the sideburns are strings & patchy compared to the rest of my head, full healthy hair. I think time to visit derm again. ❤

    Loosing ones hair must be traumatic for anyone. I remember when Princess Caroline of Monaco lost her hair due to alopecia back in 1996. It was reported as being caused by the stress of loosing her husband in a speedboat accident, and becoming a young widow left to raise three young children. The crash happened 6 years previously, but it was perhaps a delayed affect? Even though she was from a privileged background it would have been difficult being in the public eye going through shock & grief and also being contantly defined by the media for her physical beauty. She also lost her mother Princess Grace of Monaco (the former Hollywood actress Grace Kelly) in a car crash when she was a teenager. The media made it worse by their conspiracy theories and insinuating that the Grimaldi Royal family was cursed.
    I see that Princess Caroline is now embracing her grey hair.
    I am not a royalist at all, but Princess Caroline's (and her family) life makes for interesting reading, including her philanthropic endeavors... particularly children's charities (eg. UNICEF) and others less fortunate.

    7:29 I was diagnosed with Alopecia for 20+ years, and in talking to other people who have Alopecia, you shouldn’t have any burning or itching with it. For me, Alopecia was a misdiagnosis and I actually have Tinea Capitis, which comes with burning and itching. Nothing topical can reach in the shaft, so you have to take an antifungal to get rid of it.
    It started with dandruff (years before so I didn’t relate the hair loss) and then circle patches of hair loss that expanded into almost complete hair loss.
    I got it when I was 8, and I am only getting treatment now.
    I hear it’s rare, but seeing as dermatologists are confused about the symptoms of Alopecia, I wonder if it is just misdiagnosed..

      I am a female. My dermatologist said it's hereditary. I started doing a comb-over at 25. I have had unexplained (idiopathic) urticaria (hives) for 30 years and another dermatologist (retired) told me I had autoimmune and he wanted to lower my immune system........I said no. My hair is missing about 2 inches dead center. I'm so tired of trying to figure out ways to hide it. I hate wigs. The comb over is exhausting because it just wants to flip back to the other side even with a clip in it. It looks ridiculous when the wind blows because the middle blows back to the other side and I have this sad little clip in front. Then I get frustrated and tell my hairdresser to layer the top. My hair is curly so each layer curls up and it looks really sparse. I was once bending over and my new husband said "you're losing your hair." ( We're divorced.) I can understand why Jada Pinkett Smith just did a buzz cut. Unfortunately, I don't look like Jada Pinkett Smith, she would look beautiful in a burlap bag. There's a new drug approved by the FDA, LITFULO. But the side effects are scary. This has affected my life for years. I also had a beard ( I had electrolysis) but no blood work has ever found any elevated testosterone. I'm exhausted and depressed. It's unfair.

    I had ophiasis pattern AA a few years ago. The bald area grew bigger and bigger for about 6 months then my hair spontaneously grew back without treatment and it hasn't happened again. My nails were also super brittle. I also have 2 other autoimmune diseases. This happened when I was in my mid 40s. I was just starting to think about getting a wig when it started growing back. I had a bald strip across the back of my head from ear to ear about 2 inches wide and I also had some round spots at the crown of my head.

    This is so timely, thank you! I have researched your older videos on this but appreciate the update on treatment options. I trust you more than my own derm bc she doesn't have time to explain in such detail. 🙏
    I was recently diagnosed with this, biopsy negative but tested low-med positive ANA. My follow up ANA was very low. However my hair loss is not in patches, it's in a frontal V-pattern and so I'm wondering if AA is an accurate Dx especially after watching your frontal fibrosing video last week. I am pretty hairless thanks to IPL, I don't know if losing my lashes/brows bc I use Latisse and I over plucked in the 90s. So it's hard to tell what exactly is going on or if it's going to be scarring, which is definitely distressing. Steroid injections did help but I don't know about keeping this up long term. My derm has given me topical steroid, oral Minoxidil, topical Minoxidil etc. She said to throw everything at it but how do you know what's working and what isn't if you do that? I thought about PRP and LLT iRestore but in an another video you did say those won't help AA. But I don't know if it really is AA. I'm still lost. This is a lot of take in. Anyway thank you again, I appreciate the genuine compassion you have for suffering people.

    Im dealing with alopecia areata right now which i noticed after a major life event few months back. Definitely from inflammation and stress for me. I had one episode of bald spot about 10 years ago on the same spot i have now but this time the size doubled up. I get few small spots here and there but it grows back quickly. Never thought it was from stress the first time since i also have thyroid disease. But now that i know my t4 and tsh has been normal i ruled out this time it came from major stress for sure. I used nioxin system 3 twice a day faithfully and seemed to be helping i see my hair growing now after just finished just one bottle. I used the same method before same thing my hair grew back.

    You should have titled this video “ Hair loss from alopecia areata?” Because at first look I didn’t realize this video was about hair loss. Anyway, I wonder if I have this because I am under a lot of stress and notice hair thinning and small areas of bald spots. I guess I have to look for a dermatologist. I hope my medical coverage covers most of the expenses!

    Hi Dray, thank you for such an informative video. Do you mind doing a video on Pro-Xylane? It’s been heavily marketed by L’Oréal in China for the past few years, claiming great anti-aging effects. The brands that claim to contain Pro-Xylane are Skinceutical (specifically the AGE cream), helena rubinstein, and L’Oréal’s RevitaLift line. On the other hand, Pro-Xylane seems to be rarely talked about in North America. Do you mind sharing some background on this ingredient and your thoughts its anti-aging effect? Thank you!

    I was wondering if you had done any type of content addressing the formation of small pin sized white heads through the day/ during the night on the face? I’ve tried so many moisturizers and washes and have a simple routine just using vani cream brand. Thanks 🙏🏼🥰

    Could you please make a video talking about opzelura specifically regarding eczema. I recently got it prescribed for the eczema I have on my hands but I'm a bit skeptical to use it as the side effects have made me hesitant. I also am worried about it weakening my immune system and causing more issues. Thank you, much love 🫶

    • @Anonymous4444
      @Anonymous4444 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm currently using Opzelura cream and so far don't have any side effects from it and I've been using it for over a month at this point. I wouldn't worry about it lowering your entire immune function because it's just a topical cream, not a systemic medication and should only target the area that you apply it. I know the side effect list is long and scary but my dermatologist reassured me that I was unlikely to experience any of that so I'm not too worried about it anymore. Definitely discuss any concerns you may have about it with your doctor though.

      Dr Dray has said the problem you can run into with using bar soap to the hair is that it lacks the sequestering agents found in shampoo that prevent soap scum from forming, so it can lead to dry, dull hair, itchy scalp, & dandruff. There are channels that focus on silver hair like Nikol Johnson, Glam Girl Gabi. I don't know if Erica Henry Johnston is still updating her channel.
