Of all the matches Maria has played since her return from suspension, I feel like this was the best gauge of where her game is. Every other time she won or lost a match, there was an asterisk against it. When she won, it was against a mid-tier player or a high ranked player who had their own demons to contend with, whether injury, lack of fitness or the stakes just weren't high enough to exert oneself fully. And when she lost, even to the high ranked players, you just got the sense that maybe that is still not vintage Sharapova out there competing and so maybe it does not count too much. But I feel like now, Maria is officially back to her level, pre-suspension. Which is remarkable because it can take a long time for circumstances to align perfectly like that (In her case it has taken close to 3 years?). Azarenka for example is not even close to figuring out where she is and who knows when she will get deep enough into a draw of an important tournament to meet a good player who will themself be in peak performance form so that she can gauge herself against. And to take this even further, Maria is meeting Barty next week for example. Maria 'ran away' from their match last week with a 'shoulder injury' when she saw that she was losing to Barty who is playing some of the best tennis out there. She cannot run again this time around. The stakes are high enough. So this match will be a good measure of where Barty is with her game knowing that she is now facing as good a Sharapova as has ever been. It's all very exciting in the WTA right now. Best pool of players as has ever been in my opinion.

I wrote in her Twitter some time ago, telling her that she had to be aggressive as she was in the beginning and that she used the parallels to earn her points,since having a powerful blow, she can easily do it and take the opponent side by side, because that bothers them fatally.
