I'm Australian and only fly QANTAS where possible but when it comes to the 747, I don't care who's airline livery she's painted in, she's always going to be the QUEEN OF THE SKY.
One thing I'll say for Qantas and Air New Zealand pilots they are definitely top-notch pilots working for top-notch airlines. I've been to Aus three times now via New Zealand and these two airlines are just great. My bucket list now is to go on the A380. Beautiful landings gentlemen/ladies piloting a beautiful aircraft!!! Thanks.
Dennis Challinor you'll love the a380. Might look a bit ungainly from outside, but inside you will appreciate the quieter cabin and higher air pressure, which makes for a more restful long haul flight.

Errol - thank you for your comment. I'm a 70 yr. old tainted blood victim and I'm just hoping I will last long enough to afford the trip as I have friends in Aus that I dearly want to see again before I snuff it.
what I love the best is watching our beautiful Qantas landing in our beautiful country it makes this clip so special it's great to see our beautiful city Sydney....

I was standing in between a 747-8 and an Airbus A380 after we step out our Airbus A 340 600 last week on a domestic flight from Cape Town, for me the Boeing 747-8 is by far the most beautiful and impressive aircraft. This video is super.
Qantas 747 fleet includes I think 5 or 7 400ER,s delivered between approx2000 and 2004 so they are newer than a lot of Boeing 777's. These were for long overwater routes before the Etops twin were introduced.
Don't think so, Brighton too far for footage like this. My guess is it was filmed at the carpark next to old ATC tower, the international airport observation deck and from the grassy area on the final for 18R on the other side of the river
I really miss these guys😪😪😪 They were such beautiful aircraft whose time was cut short by the Co-Vid crisis. Such a shame that they couldnt celebrate their 50th anniversary with Qantas. They will be in our hearts forever. Long live the Queen of The Skies!!!
Not many people know that after they retired the 707 Qantas was an all 747 airline operating only international routes. Only when they purchased TAA did they began domestic operations from the late 80's early 90's. I'm wondering what they'll use on the Santiago route after the 747's are retired. More interesting will be how they operate the Johannesburg route which covers a very remote flight path and can only be operated by 4 engine aircraft.
I wonder if any of the airlines using the 747 will replace them, even they haven't said so ?? They seem to be well liked , then they may all go for the 777x or some other two engine plane .
You better be quick, Qantas is gradually retiring them, they only have six 747-400 aircraft in the fleet now. Within 10 years they will be all replaced by the 787.
The 747 has big advantages over the A380. First, it's engines don't have uncontained explosions. Second, it lets the captain and first officer fly it with a yoke instead of a video game joystick. Three, its computers are there to make it easy to fly, not to fly it instead of the crew.

Did they get rid of the ones with the Rolls Royce engines?
no, not all. 4 out of the 11 still in service are still operating using the RR engines, they are the older ones though
